Who Is Hester Prynne's Suffering In The Scarlet Letter

Everyone has done something that they regret in their life. Hester Prynne was someone who had to live with that regret for the rest of her life. The Scarlet Letter, a literary classic, was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hester committed adultery and had to wear a scarlet “A” on her chest. She lives her life with her daughter Pearl. Hester’s shame and guilt didn’t stop her from experiencing true happiness.
Hester has shame in her life that she had to live with. Hester was married to Chillingworth, but when she was sent to America, she had an affair. She was forced to wear the Scarlet Letter on here bosom in reminder of her sin. “On the breast of her gown, in fine red cloth, surrounded by with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread, appeared the letter A.” (57). Hester, at times, had to stand on a scaffold with her daughter. Standing up on the wood meant “guilt and shame in a fellow-creature” (62). Her daughter was her treasure. That’s how she got the name pearl. “she named the infant “Pearl,” as being of great price purchased with all she had, her mother’s only treasure!” (100). She loved her daughter, Pearl made her happy. After years with her scarlet letter on her chest, it started to lose meaning. She did more for the people, helped them. In fact, her letter no longer had the same meaning. Some people even said, “it meant Able; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman’s strength.” (185). Hester and Dimmesdale, Pearl’s father, met in the forest to talk. They talk about going to Europe as a family, free from everyone. Hester thought it was a good time to start over. “The future is yet full of trial and success. There is happiness to be enjoyed! There is good to be done!” (230).
