All these characteristics are concerns clients confront professional counselors about. Depending on the age, counselors can study the personality theory to indicate the significant event the client is experiencing. The following essay will use a lifespan perspective to discuss how major transitions can influence both occupational and personal development. Using occupation as a coping strategy during stressful transitions will also be explored. The narrative discussed was derived from an informal, semi-structured interview. Occupational development will explore how the meanings associated with occupations can change and how this can be reflective of their current life-stage. The essay will begin with an outline of the precautions taken to maintain the interviewee’s confidentiality. This will be followed by a brief explanation of the lifespan and occupational models that will be used throughout the essay. A summary of the interviewee’s narrative will then be provided. This will be expanded upon by using lifespan theories.

As already mentioned existing career theories dealing with vocational personality and environment Holland (1976) and Scheine’s anchors (1978) have been well respected and very adequate for many years.Those theories were helping many people to form and succeed in their career paths.

For example , if we look at Erikson’s stages , middle adulthood are in the generativity versus stagnation . Whereas when I interviewed my friend Nene , I realized that she was in the Identity vs Role Confusion( Steinberg , Bornstein , Vandell & Rook , 2011). Nene portrayed this stage because she was an 18 year old, who just got into college and left her parents . The selection of her major would definitely demonstrate what her interest is and possible career field she would like to partake in . She is an Agronomy major , so she is interested in the soil and the importance of growing nutritious food from the soil. According to Niles & Harris (2013), Donald Super developed his theory segmentally. There is no ‘Super’s theory’; there is just the assemblage of theories that Super sought to synthesize. The result is really a “segmental theory” describing three key aspects of career development: (a) life span, (b) life space, and (c) self-concept. The theory culminates in an intervention model labeled as the Career Development Assessment and Counseling (C-DAC) model.

The theoretical career development framework that I chose to assist in Catherine’s career counseling process is Donald Super’s counseling theory. I decided to chose this particular career development framework because I thought it would be the most effective and appropriate to use with the client. The client is thirty-seven years of age and is dealing with a lot on her plate. Equally important, people grow and change throughout their lives and this theory respects that.

This self-concept is developed by a combination of environmental determinants, personal determinants, and situational determinants. Personal determinants, according to Super, include both biological and psychological aspects of the individual. Environmental determinants are generally outside of the individual’s own control and include such factors as the extrinsic employment practices and the broader labor market. Super categorizes a person’s historical and socioeconomic context as situational determinants. Within this theory a person’s self concept is developed by their initial childhood experiences and continues to develop throughout their lifespan as their personal experiences interact with their external determinants. As discussed earlier, Donald Super’s Lifespan, Life- Space Theory is member of the developmental theory category. Brown (2016) explains that Super has extensively written and influenced the topic of career development. It is hard for even the most educated person to grasp all of his successes in the field. Super segmented his theory into propositions. His original theory was divided into ten propositions, but later added fours. The new four propositions were not added as 11-14. He added them into the existing ten, which allowed him to elaborate more on the pervious steps. As any good theorist, Super continued to build on his knowledge throughout his life. He was never content with status of his theory, which resulted in the addition to the theory. The propositions can also be referred to as a summarizing statement (Savickas, 1997).

As human beings grow they become more popular which are devices for self-actualization, team building and matchmaking towards the career and not to other people. Jung Carl a psychologist uses the platform to assess human beings and their career in the future. To get an enticing career one should have personality test in the major bothers in life, life challenges, originality, and what satisfied someone. The test the personality one needs to cross-check their behaviors and social desires. One needs to choose the career which is closely and matches their characters and life desires.
