Her parents were passionate about surfing and they passed along their love of the beach to Bethany and her brothers, Noah and Timmy. Cheri was a strict teacher and made sure that Bethany never fell behind on her work while her brothers toughened her up for all her competitions. Most people believed the attack put an end my surfing career. Determined to prove them wrong, I returned to the water one month after the attack, once again beating all odds. It was challenging to change what I was so used to, but I adjusted and started competing again. Within two years of being back in the ocean, I won my first national title. From 2003-2006 I was doing much more than just surfing, I appeared on several popular TV shows and also won multiple incredible awards. I became a source of inspiration to millions through my acts of faith, hope, and determination.

Life is a challenge, especially with one arm, but that didn’t stop Bethany from surfing. “I had some stitches on what was left of my arm . . . and the doctor ordered me to stay out of the water until everything healed up. I set a deadline for myself: Thanksgiving Day” (Hamilton 177). The quote shows that Bethany is determined to get back into the water, despite the fact that she has one arm.

It made a lot of things harder for her, but that doesn’t mean she gave up. Surfing was a big part of her life, and giving that up wasn’t going to happen. It was a rough process, but Bethany eventually gave up her fears and got back on her board. Lifeguards and doctors say it was her determination and faith in God that got her back up. In January 2004, Bethany made her big return in surf competitions. Her first competition after getting back on her board, she placed 5th place. With no intention of stopping, Bethany continued to enter and excel in competition. Bethany's trait is shown when ABC news states that, "throughout the terrifying ordeal, Hamilton remained calm"(paragraph 9). Getting attacked by a shark is not the most relaxing or calming situation. The fact that Bethany was composed and handled it so well shows true strength. Her actions made it easier to handle the ordeal and Bethany Hamilton now serves as a role model for many. Bethany Hamilton is an American professional surfer who survived a shark attack in 2003 which resulted in her left arm was bitten off but, ultimately returned to her love of surfing and was victorious in later professional surfing competitions. She was home-schooled from 6th grade and went back to school for high school.
