In the epic poem Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney tells the tale of an extraordinary hero who fought vicious demonic monsters. Beowulf protected the people from the monsters and fought anything he was very courageous and very loyal. He loved the fame he received from all his victories. All these qualities are what make him such a memorable hero. It didn’t matter where you went or who you asked, if you brought up Beowulf was known as a hero and had plenty of stories. He shows loyalty by promising that he’ll kill the monster he set out to kill, to his father and by keeping word; he also goes back and takes care of where he came from. Even after he killed the ferocious Grendel they wanted him to stay and rule their kingdom but he was loyal to his dad and where he came from and stayed there to rule them. “His name was Edgetho. His life lasted many winter; wise men all over the earth surely remember him still.” Beowulf was going show loyalty by continuing what his father had started; continuing the protection his father once offered there villages. Not only did he kill the ferocious Grendel but his mother too, the king said to him “Seek it if you dare! Another great story of his defeat would be when he fought Grendel’s mother in the water. He won of course but everyone else was too scared to battle her because of her strength but that didn’t matter to the great warrior he took the challenge and won. Beowulf shows loyalty by telling the king that he’s not hiding anything and that he has come with his men for business with the king. He expects to do only that. This can compare to a soldier because the soldier stays loyal to their country and would risk their lives for the safety of others. High power could be given to one at any time desired. Loyalty was an attribute Beowulf held throughout his life. Beowulf lived to strengthen and to care for the tribe. Beowulf could become a king, but instead of battling and betraying a friend, he chose to be righteous and loyal. Rather, Beowulf was happy to be able to give his loyal duties to Hrothgar.
Every epic hero possesses certain heroic characteristics. The epic poem Beowulf describes the most heroic man of the Anglo-Saxon times. Beowulf is the hero. He shows that he is a great man by always putting other things before his own needs. He is important and needed by his people and is known by many as a strong, courageous and a helpful person. The story of Beowulf is and epic poem. Beowulf is significant and glorified he’s on a quest to figure out who was the descendant of Cain. Beowulf showed himself to be strong and responsible leader because he wanted to be honored by the king. Beowulf possesses the characteristic of a hero because he fights for noble cause, he follows a code of honor, and he possesses strength and courage that is greater than anyone else. There were three major fights between Grendel’s Mother and the Dragon.
The other leading heroic trait that Beowulf possesses is loyalty. The Anglo-Saxon warriors believe in the idea of comitatus, which are the faithful and unbreakable bonds between his king and his warriors. Throughout the story, Beowulf had shown devotions to both his leader and his followers. As mentioned earlier, Beowulf easily passed all the treasure to his uncle noting that “since every benefit I have ever received I owe to you, my closest and kindest kinsman on earth." (Chapter 31).He shows great gratitude to his king by presenting all of his treasures that he had gained. He was then portrayed to be “loyal and true and loved him dearly,” (Chapter 31). Additionally, not only he is committed to his rulers, Beowulf is also loyal to his followers. Beowulf is about a medieval Geatish warrior who is considered an epic hero. An epic hero can be described by being admired for great achievements that they have accomplished many great deeds and heroic actions. Beowulf has all of the characteristics that an epic hero needs to possess, including bravery, strength, courage, and a desire to achieve immortality. Beowulf battled and won against Grendel, at the beginning of the poem, Grendel’s Mother, second, and the dragon which was the last battle. Beowulf is a hero that put his life on the line for an entire kingdom. He must prove his worthiness of a superior warrior. He is recognized for his strengths and power of protecting his people. There are many qualities a hero must possess such as bravery and courage.
Not everyone has the same definition of a hero - while some may see one person as a hero, others may not. In "Heroism", Ralph Waldo Emerson writes of qualities that he believes makes someone heroic. When comparing these qualities to Beowulf, it becomes evident that Emerson would see Beowulf as a hero.

He had in the past battled many monsters before but none as terrifying and gruesome as Grendel. Grendel is a monster that lives in the slimy, dark moors near King Hrothgar's castle. He is agitated by the constant loud music that is played in Hrothgar's hall. Beowulf travels to the land where Hrothgar rules, to slay Grendel and stop the murder sprees that wipes out Hrothgar's men. This is where you will see although very confident in himself, Beowulf portrays loyalty to his family. " I bought the end of Edgetho's barrel, sent ancient treasures through the ocean's burrows to the wulfings; your father swore he'd keep that peace." Beowulf is a hero, and we all know a hero when we see one. There are many traits and characteristics that make someone a hero. These traits and characteristics are more expressed in ancient epics and poems. Beowulf is one of the most famous ancient Anglo-Saxon poems still taught to this day in schools and colleges all over the world. The story starts off of how a man by the name of Beowulf receives news that a neighboring land is being terrorized by a monster named Grendel. Beowulf shows several characteristics of here such as, bravery, loyalty, generosity, friendship, and showing a high level of intellect. Beowulf first shows his heroic character through his bravery while journeying on his epic quest. There are several cases where he is not afraid, and instead of being frightened, he shows great bravery. An example of from the poem is, “Instead, they inspected omens and spurred his ambitions to go, whilst he moved about like the leader he was, enlisting men, the best he could find; with fourteen others the warrior boarded the boast as captain” (Beowulf 205-210). This quote gives proof of his bravery because he was the head of the group leading his men. Beowulf proves that even he himself must be brave in order to lead the bravest of men into battle.
