Martin Luther King Jr. is considered a hero for his outstanding achievements, noble qualities, and excellent choices. However, one may wonder what are the qualities that create an ordinary hero. The “Whirligig” is a book about a young boy who makes whirligigs and places them in four states of the United States due to his murder of a young girl, Lea. Brent, the young boy, places these whirligigs for Lea’s mother, does this prove him to be a hero? Brent should not be considered a hero due to the fact that he murdered someone, he did not intentionally make people happy, and only makes the whirligigs to relieve himself of the guilt. Towards the beginning of the book “Whirligig” Brent Bishop tries to kill himself just over the fact that the girl he liked humiliated him in front of a group of friends. However, Brent ends up killing a young innocent women named Lea. Brent tries to kill himself and murders someone, this proves the fact that his choice and actions do not determine him to be a hero. He was told to place these whirligigs in the four corners of the United States, he performed this task as part of his restitution and self punishment, not to provide joy and happiness for others. Brent thought that “It would give him a chance to do Penance,” page 42. Generally, a hero is someone that provides happiness and joy through significant achievements or worthy qualities however, this indicates that Brent built the whirligigs for himself and for his restitution. Therefore, Brent has only taken this journey across America for himself not for the pleasure of

Everyone’s point of view of being a hero is different, some might state that being a hero means solving crimes and wears capes like all superhero in movies. There are many heroes, but there are those who sit back and question what or who makes a hero in today’s society. It has never been a set standard for heroes. In this modern world, there are many types of heroes. In today’s media, there is a contrast between million dollar sports figures, glorified celebrities, and the normal people we call heroes. The hero is usually the character who fulfills a necessary task and who will restore justice to a community. In some ways Christopher Boone a 15-year-old boy with Asperger’s does restore justice to a community by finding out who killed Wellington. Wellington was Mrs. Shears’ dog. He was found dead with a garden fork through his body. Christopher is more of a hero for proving that just because he has Asperger’s it does not mean he can’t do what others can. During the book

“A hero does for others. He would do anything for people he loves, because he knows it would make their lives better”(191). This quote reflects on what a hero is in the book A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. The main character Grant becomes a hero through the eyes of others, after meeting with another main character Jefferson, who was wrongly accused for a crime because the color of his skin was black. Jefferson got the punishment of being put to death by the electric chair. Grant goes to visit Jefferson in jail because Miss Emma wants Jefferson to be a man and walk to the electric chair. Grant could be considered a hero in this text because he helped Jefferson become a better person, Jefferson transformed into a man with the help of Grant for the love of his family, and Grant also teaches kids without enjoying his job though he is good at teaching.
A hero isn’t just Superman but someone who stands up for what they believe in and is a sense of hope for everyone. Jackie Robinson was the first African American Major League Baseball player. In current times, history portrays George Washington as a fearless legend and, to many, the first American hero. A hero can be defined as a person who displays great courage, is favored by the gods, and is celebrated for their bold exploits. Although Washington’s early military career was fraught with failure, his reputation remained unscathed. Because Washington was able to maintain a pristine image, he was able to grow as both a military and political leader. Thus, based on his overall military career, George Washington should be remembered as an American hero.
Martin Luther King Jr. can be considered as an epic hero because he successfully used his epic hero characteristics to lead a civil rights movement that contributed to the end of segregation. King used his humility, his capability of great deeds, and his supernatural aid to accomplish his goals because he saw a change he wanted to see in the world. He didn’t wait for someone else to do something about it. He became the change he wished to see. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. resembles a true epic hero who is not afraid to stand up and make a change in their
Beowulf was both a hero and a proud fool. This was demonstrated by his actions throughout the poem. Beowulf was not a hero when compared to the responders of the 9/11 attacks, because they risked their lives for the safety of others whereas Beowulf only risked his life for rewards that followed, this made him

Heroes are not always people who lead marches or do things for their country. For example policemen, firefighters, nurses, lifeguards etc. are heroes everyday because they take the time to save lives. When they’re going through a challenge or trying to overcome a conflict they always have courage. These people risk their own life to save someone else’s. To be more specific Dr. Ginger Holt from Dallas had saved a little boy’s leg. She was confident and determined to finding out what went wrong in the boy’s leg and went through many procedures looking at the tests.
How we act or react in difficult situations defines our persona. Sometimes these situations provide opportunities to be a hero. After reading Grant Wiggins’s own definition of a hero, it is apparent that Grant becomes a hero. Grant states, “A hero is someone who does something for other people. He does something that other men don’t and cant to. He is different from other men. He is above other men. No matter who those other men are, the hero, no matter who he is, is above them.” Grant becomes a hero by earning an education to become a teacher, undergoing psychological changes, and counseling Jefferson to die with dignity.
Heroes act a certain way that people may not always take into mind. Heroes are always very determined, but humble and modest. They put others before themselves and keep their minds on their goals and never give up on what they’re doing and what they stand for, even when risks are involved.
