Martin Luther King Jr. is considered a hero for his outstanding achievements, noble qualities, and excellent choices. However, one may wonder what are the qualities that create an ordinary hero. The “Whirligig” is a book about a young boy who makes whirligigs and places them in four states of the United States due to his murder of a young girl, Lea. Brent, the young boy, places these whirligigs for Lea’s mother, does this prove him to be a hero? Brent should not be considered a hero due to the fact that he murdered someone, he did not intentionally make people happy, and only makes the whirligigs to relieve himself of the guilt. Towards the beginning of the book “Whirligig” Brent Bishop tries to kill himself just over the fact that the girl he liked humiliated him in front of a group of friends. However, Brent ends up killing a young innocent women named Lea. Brent tries to kill himself and murders someone, this proves the fact that his choice and actions do not determine him to be a hero. Typically, a heroes actions and choices have to line up with a heroes good acts. As of right now Brent is definitely not one to be considered a hero. …show more content…

He was told to place these whirligigs in the four corners of the United States, he performed this task as part of his restitution and self punishment, not to provide joy and happiness for others. Brent thought that “It would give him a chance to do Penance,” page 42. Generally, a hero is someone that provides happiness and joy through significant achievements or worthy qualities however, this indicates that Brent built the whirligigs for himself and for his restitution.
