Chapter Two 1) Identify the following variables as either qualitative or quantitative and EXPLAIN your answers. a. The number of people on a jury. Qualitative Quantitative has values of numbers or measurements. Quantitative is represented by numbers and the number of people on a jury always ranges from 6 to 12. It means that there is a count of people that are needed on a jury. b. The color of your house Qualitative is data that has no value or numbers. The color of a house is not a number it is a group. The color is just a category and not a number. The color is there to identify and the question was not how many of these house were this particular color but the color of the house. . 2) Identify the number as either continuous or discrete …show more content…
The number of limbs on a 2-year-old oak tree is 21. The answer is discrete because there are whole numbers and there is no in-between. The oak tree is 21 not 21.5 it is 21. Only whole number intervals are considered discrete numbers. 3) Determine which of the four levels of measurement is most appropriate and explain your answer. a. Temperatures in degrees Fahrenheit of the ocean at various depths. The interval level of measurement is quantitative information about intervals have meaning but ratios doesn`t. The temperatures are intervals because of the consistency in the changes of the heat. If it is 0 degrees Fahrenheit it would not have any meaning. b. The rank of individuals in the military The ordinal level of measurement has to deal with ranking and the order of certain person, place, or thing. It would be easy to identify the rankings of the people in the military are based on scores and their positions in the military. No one really knows what it takes to be in the ranks in the military butt one does knows that there are different levels of rank in the military. c. The number of people with blue, brown and red hair in a …show more content…
If you go out it is a luxury. One knows how to spend and save their money. Every time I go to the store I do not have to get name brands the store brand work just as fine. Shop for bargains and go for the manager specials. There are a lot of specials and one needs to find the one right for them. The CPI is good for people who have suffered through the stock market. Apparently the CPI has been raising price for our goods only because something new about what we use in our house every day. Chicken was the most inexpensive meat and now today we are paying 16 dollars for a chicken breast. Gas was also affordable it was .79 cents in the nineties but soon there was a shift in the money for the government the gas went up to 4 dollars. Although today it is 1.99 it will never be the same. For a guide that is supposed to help us is defeating us with every chance. In my case it was just another day because it had not impact on me. The economy hit the people who had six figure income jobs and were millionaires. I was in school from a low income family and my family made out these years knowing the struggle. When peoples pocket hit hard they had to learn how to adjust their income. It was sad but it did not change how I was living my life. The only changes I was trying to improve my life and the people around me. As of now we have come a long way, but there is still a struggle. In my opinion the richer is still
Nominal data is the most basic level of measurement. It is also known as categorical. The numbers do not imply an order. Basically nominal data is used for frequency and the only number property of the nominal scale of measurement is identity. An everyday example of the use of nominal data would be classifying people according to gender is a common application of the nominal scale. When you first meet someone, an observation is generally made on the specific gender of the person you are meeting for the first time.
“1. The researchers analyzed the data they collected as though it were at what level of measurement? (Your choices are: Nominal, Ordinal, Interval/ratio, or Experimental)”
3. Quantitative data is easily compiled into something meaningful because it is based on concrete data. On the other hand, qualitative data is presented in a raw form and needs
Scales of measurement defines a framework wherein numbers are assigned to objects based on a set of rules (Thorndike & Thorndike-Christ, 2009). These authors presented four different types of scales of measurement as ordinal, nominal, ratio and interval.
Qualitative Research is using the characteristic of something such as colour, shape, texture, etc. Qualitative research is commonly used to research the quality of a product for example the red T-shirt is soft and fits well.
The level of measurement for the variable tenure would be ordinal. There are over twenty values in this variable and they have a meaningful order. The values go from the lowest to the highest. The values also do not have a definite difference in between the values. Some of the differences are one, some are two, and some are even ten. This is why the variable tenure would be on the ordinal level.
Qualitative deals with understanding of human behavior based on informants perspective while quantitative deals with the discovering of facts about a social
General speaking, quantitative research is thought to be objective, however qualitative research often involves a subjective element. There are differences designs in qualitative research in comparison to quantitative research. Qualitative research involves words, pictures, or objects; Quantitative involves data in the form of numbers and statistics.
In the book Introduction to Criminal Justice Research Methods: An Applied Approach, the authors explain that quantitative criminal justice research asks questions such as:
Data can be further classified as being qualitative or quantitative. The statistical analysis that is appropriate depends on whether the data for the variable are qualitative or quantitative. In general, there are more alternatives for statistical analysis when the data are quantitative.
Qualitative data: data that are based on observations (interviews and document analysis) not numerical data. By observing the students reading their books, I was able to collect qualitative data to show how well the students grasped the concept.
Qualitative is a systematic subjective approach in other words used to describe a person life experiences which in turn give them meaning. Furthermore, some characteristics could include soft science, the basic element of analysis, and individual interpretation. On the other hand, quantitative is a formal, objective, systematic process for obtaining information about the
There are four general types of measurement scales: sorting, ranking, rating, and categorizing (Cooper & Schindler, 2006). The data collected by the survey team at Insuratel used a rating scale. The surveys where used to measure employee job satisfaction across departments. The Likert Scale was used to collect the data for all the questions in the survey. The questions asked in the survey studied the attitudes of the employees and their satisfaction. The surveys provided valuable feedback and determined that most of the employees are satisfied with their jobs at Insuratel. The study also suggests that employees don’t have a strong opinion about support from upper level management.
Qualitative research focuses on understanding the human aspect of a hypothesis; it researches the human behavior and the perspectives of the subjects being observed. Quantitative research focuses on facts of a study through numbers and relies on fixed, measurable ideas. Qualitative research collects data through interviews, observations, and analyzed by theme or frame. Quantitative research collects data though measurable data collection and are analyzed in numerical and statistical comparisons (Criswell, 2015).
Quantitative statistics or statistics is based totally on portions acquired the usage of a quantifiable size process. In assessment, qualitative statistics records qualities which are descriptive, subjective or tough to measure.[1] In classical phrases, the shape quantitative belonging is such that distinctive magnitudes of the quantity stand in terms of each other as ratios which, in flip, can be expressed as real numbers. Dimension is the dedication or estimation of ratios of quantities.[2]; quantity and measurement are therefore jointly defined: “quantitative
