Hello Magne,
I always enjoy reading your posts. I also agree that weakness or madness is the most acceptable definition because not everyone who commits a suicide is going through the same situation. Moreover, our society believe that all people who suffer from mental illness will commit suicide, or believe that people who try to take their own lives are crazy. We cannot judge someone by his or her actions because we do not know what is the person situation. Also, we should never use suicide as an option, but if someone decides to commit a suicide it should never be label as a criminal act.
7. Chapter 7: Case Study: Suicide, Smoking, and the Search For the Unsticky Cigarette In the case of tipping points, there can be positive and negative social epidemics. In chapter four, Gladwell touches on one kind of negative social epidemic: crime in New York in the 1980’s. In chapter seven, he elaborates on negative epidemics by bringing up the teen suicide epidemic in Micronesia and the teen smoking epidemic occurring presently in the U.S.
Over a span of only five years, the college spending per athlete has increased 61% not considering the idea of an annual salary for the collegiate player. Annual salary from a college could sway the athlete's decision when it come to committing to a school even though the college may not have the funds to pay a full salary for the player. Also, some division I colleges are already struggling to pay for scholarship they provide for the athlete which could cause the effectiveness of the education in the classroom to decline. College athletes would be forced to focus on their sport more than their academics because They will feel pressured to train harder and risk injury to keep their salary stable. Many experts agree that college athletes should not be at the college to play sports but to further their education.
Since the fifteen century, society has viewed suicide or intentional death as immoral. It was not until the twentieth century that these “immoral” attitudes were challenged. As of 2016, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Colombia have unambiguously legalized direct assisted dying. Other areas, having to undergo a process of either a judicial or legislative decision, include Canada, Japan, and Germany. Currently in the United States, following the same process of a judicial or legislative processes, are the states Oregon, Washington, Vermont, Montana, and California.
I am going to write a film analysis essay for the film The Dark Knight. My chosen essay topic is: Analyse how visual or sound effects were used to emphasise a theme in the visual or oral text(s). I need to show how the main themes of showing morality when making decisions and the power held by the villain are presented in the film through the use of dialogue, camerawork, sound, and editing. I will refer to the scene when The Joker announces his social experiment and he and Batman have their final fight, The Ferry Scene, for my specific example. I will also comment on the director, Christopher Nolan’s intentions in order to show my personal insight into the film.
The story climaxes when the accident did not kill either of them. At this point Mattie unintentionally is the cause of Ethan’s suffering. Most people think that they know the true meaning of madness and suicide. Suicide is the act of killing yourself. It is the 11th leading cause of death in America (CDC 2009). I have never had any intentions on committing suicide and I never really understood why people commit suicide that’s why I chose this topic to help me understand what problems people go through that makes them do such a thing. Sociology is the study of social behavior and the culture of humans. There are numerous reasons like financial stress, family problems or mental health disorders that lead to suicide. The number one cause of suicide is untreated depression. The issues that were just listed are some social conditions from society that results in a suicidal
Suicide is immoral since the cause is considered a disease by numerous psychiatrists and doctors, and are backed by studies according to Dr. Thomas Joiner, author of Why Do People Die by Suicide? According to studies on suicide victims who have survived and have not survived, there are consistent links to mental disorders and depression along with a history of alcohol and substance abuse, a history of mistreatment, and isolation from family and society. In addition, Dr. Joiner states there are traits that accompany suicide such as the feeling of being a burden on others, so death is better than living. Furthermore, there is a feeling of loneliness or social disconnection as if they are on the outside looking in so why not just leave. Dr.
“If everything is God 's will, then so is the invention of the vaccine, just like the seatbelt.”-Els Borst. This is relevant because if vaccinations were not an effective medical advancement, then they would not have ever been created or used. Vaccinations should be required by governments for the well being of everyone, with the exception of religious obligation. A resistance to vaccine requirements is that some people think vaccinations are propaganda from the government as some sort of money maker or poison. Also, most do not realize that refusing vaccinations for themselves or their children affects more than just that specific person. The key to acceptance of government required vaccinations is good information. People need more information so they know what vaccinations are and what they do. The more educated the general public is on the matter, the more likely they will be willing to support these government mandates.
Euthanasia and assisted suicide is a highly controversial topic because it literally deals with the matters of life and death. Once the procedure is done on a patient, it cannot be undone. In Canada, the issue on this topic has been discussed time and time again. The documentary The Trouble With Dying goes in depth on several patients and medical professionals as well as what their perspective on the subject is. This week I decided to read the article titled, “Sociology of Suicide” (Lester & Gunn, 2016). In this article, the authors discussed the social aspects surrounding suicide, and discuss three different theories. In Durkheim’s theory, they discuss two different characteristics responsible for social suicide, social integration and social regulation. Social integration is when the member of society is bound within their social networks, and social regulation is where desires and behaviors are restricted by social norms and customs. In this theory, it mentions that the higher the level of social regulations, therefore the more fatalistic the suicide. When assessing this factor, I happen to agree that social norms and custom in a society tends to play a factor in completed suicides.
Key Theories: Durkheim’s social fact, mechanical and organic solidarity, anomie suicide, Marx’s alienation of labor, and Weber’s class struggles
For some teens, striving for perfection has led to harming their own health and wellbeing such as living with depression and suicide. Teenagers today are relying on what they see in ads, T.V., magazines and on the internet for their input on appearances, the way they think not only comes from media sources, but from family and friends.
Hanging is the leading method of suicide around the world and is particularly popular in rural area. and the most common in the world. Suicide is the point at which an individual takes their own life away. When we consider suicide we don 't think about a child committing suicide. We regularly associate suicide with adults, so when we hear about suicide in children it is quite shocking. However, it does occur and it is quite common. Be that as it may, white Americans have higher rates of suicide than individuals who aren 't white. Additionally, in this article it depicts the statistics of child suicide.
