A steroid at its simplest definition is a manufactured hormone supplement typically created to attend to medical ailments. The drug comes in two main varieties: anabolic and corticosteroids. Emory University’s Doctor of Medicine (MD), Kenneth Mautner, cautions those who are curious about steroids in saying, “Don’t confuse anabolic and corticosteroids. Anabolic steroids are used to build up muscle. Corticosteroids are used to dampen overactive immune responses and reduce swelling” (DeNoon). That being said, the type most commonly talked about are those referred to as anabolic steroids. The abuse of steroids can have a major affect on the liver. These complications are various but include tumors in the liver along with Liver Cancer. The former (liver tumors), although not cancerous, are extremely fatal. The movement of the tumors have the possibility of rupturing. This can cause severe bleeding in the liver. Also, thought he tumors are not cancerous, there are possibilities for liver tumors to slowly transform into liver cancer. Abusing the drug can cause severe changes in the body and the way one intends to live there life in the future. Excessive use of steroids can cause major change in skin and even cause diseases of the skin. Although acne is a common flaw, acne caused by steroid use is not always receptive to medical treatment. Also, since steroids are testosterone supplements, they tend to commonly cause balding in women and men alike. Another side effect of steroid abuse is complications of the liver. Overuse of the hormone supplement can cause a development of liver tumors. Although these tumors are not cancerous, they have the potential to turn into, or cause liver cancer. Finally, possibly the most fatal consequence of abusing steroids would be the risk of cardiovascular complications. When one abuses steroids they run the risk of stroking out or having a heart attack, both of which may lead to early heart failure. Using steroids is a risk that could mean more than just a step
