As previously stated the purification of this water is absolutely necessary for human survival. Now there is more than one way that the water could be purified, but this is the simplest way to do it with the least amount of materials. Now another thing that the skillet could be used for would be as a weapon, to possibly immobilize a pig or other creature. The skillet could be taken in one hand, and then the motion of beating the pig over the head could be used repeatedly, until the pig was either dead or unconscious. Then if the pig was not dead the beating motion could be continued with this or other weapons until it is sure that he is dead. A good sign to make sure he's dead is when there is no heart beat, as well as severe infractions or fissures in his head. Then all that would be left would be to cut the pigs head off and roast it over the fire like the beast it is. The skillet could also be used in assistance of building a shelter. The skillet could be used as a weight. The rope could be tied to the handle securely, then the skillet could be thrust upward over a tree branch in order to secure the shelter to a tree, which would make it much more secure in the event of adverse weather conditions. Also if necessary, the entire shelter could be built in the tree. In that case the skillet could be used again to thrust into the tree with the rope, but it could be used this time in order to climb up and then build from there using the rope and
It was a wonder discovery. The mosquitoes had nearly driven him mad and the thought of being rid of them lifted his spirits. On another trip he looked back and saw the smoke curling up through the trees and realized, for the first time, that he now had the means to make a signal. He could carry a burning stick and build a signal fire on top of the rock, make clouds of smoke and perhaps attract attention. Which meant more wood. And still more wood.” This aha moment can change things for Brian because he now knows that he could find a way to signal the rescuers when they come and save him. This could lead to a better, safer, and easier way for Brian to get found. Also, he now can cook food for more nutrients that he has lost during the days he has been eating only berries turtle
In the book Hatchet when Brian first get fire is when he is asleep and a porcupine comes and Brian throws the hatchet at the porcupine. The thing was Brian missed and sent the hatchet flying at the wall. Then the porcupine sent quills at Brian into his leg. The next morning Brian looked at the wall and saw sparks marks and then he thought if he hit the wall with the hatchet than he could start fire. In Survival by the Numbers Peter said,”What are priorities – fire first or shelter?” Peter said that you have to have fire. Brian had to use fire a lot in the book.
Each tool and weapon was made from certain items, and they each are used in a different way.
In Hatchet, Brian doesn’t have access to a survival pack because the pack is stuck on the plane down in the lake. But Brian finds a way to start a fire with using his hatchet. Brian then shows that he has the patience to do things that may take a while. In the passage “Survival by the Numbers” it says, “ To that end, your emergency gear should include a waterproof case, a windproof shelter that you can crawl into or crawl under. If you expect to be able to construct a shelter from natural materials as advocated by many outdoor writers you will be sadly disappointed.
What does it mean to survive? Have you ever imagined yourself in the Canadian wilderness without anything but a hatchet and not knowing how you ended up there? Well, a 13 year old boy named Brian has put his life and soul to finding a way to survive. He survived by using trial and error, by not giving up, and his senses to survive. He doesn't have any food ready, no matches, and no tools besides his hatchet.
Tom Murphy was a survivor. He traveled way out to Yellow Stone with only a bag of food, a stove, mittens, small emergency kit, two water bottles, the warmest jacket, head lamp, eighth foot square tent, and a three pound down sleeping bag.
These stone tool might have served as a chopper, useful in cutting wood, cracking nuts, or breaking open bones for their marrow. One advance was the development of composite tools, like the spear. To maintain a successful Hunting/Gathering economy, these early modern humans had to be mobile. That is, they had to be able to relocate often and quickly. Hunter/Gatherers could not afford to gather possessions. They had no pack animals to help them carry loads
What would happen if you got stuck in the wilderness? 13 year old Brian Robeson is stuck in the wilderness with only 63 cents in coins, a fingernail clipper, a wallet with 20 dollars, his belt, the clothing he has on, a tattered windbreaker, a broken watch, and the hatchet his mother gave him. How would Brian survive with just those items? Brian used survival strategies such as trial and error, using his hatchet, and thinking positively
When Brian awoke he was really thirsty. He went to the lake and drank a lot of water from there. There was another problem, he found himself really hungry too. He did not know what to eat. He didn't want to think about another thing too. How far he went off his original destination course. They might not find him for along time and also he needed shelter. He could not make a fire. The only tool he had was a hatchet.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like having to survive in the wilderness for two months? A 13 year old named Brian used many different survival strategies to help him survive in the Canadian wilderness .Some strategies that he used was by using his hatchet that his mother gave him, positive thinking, and he always planned ahead.
If I was Brian stuck in the woods, I would take the hatchet and get wood to make a fire and get a temporary shelter. I probably get a lot of resources to make a big fire to get rescued. The one thing Brian should have done was to just stay cool and calm and just study the plain and land. The one thing Brian was smart to bring was a hatchet but i would have asked the pilot before i took it on the plane. If I was like Brian i would take everything from the plane that was on the island and lay out everything i have and gather what i need to do first. Then when brian is in the water i would have swam fast to island.
He uses the shelter to protect him from the rain and some animals. After he builds the shelter, Brian uses his hatchet to make spears and arrows. He takes branches and sharpens the tip of them to make arrows and spears. "He had worked on the fish spear until it had become more then just a tool. He shoots the arrows at birds and throws the spears at fish. "I know about fire; I know I need fire." Brian says this the second night he's there. Brian needs a fire because he needs it for heat, to cook food and to keep animals away. Brian makes the fire with his hatchet and a rock. First, he figures out that he needs some paper so he takes his 20-dollar bill and tries to burn it. Unfortunately, the bill just burns right out and leaves him with no fire. After that, he takes his hatchet and cuts small pieces of bark. Then he piles them up under twigs. Then he takes his hatchet and hits a rock with a great blow and sparks catch the bark on fire. He hits another blow and the sparks catch the twigs on fire. Therefore, he has a fire. This process shows that whatever Brian sets his mind to he can do it. About two months later Brian went to the bottom of the lake to see if there was anything useful in the plane. He brought up a survival package. There were many useful things in there like bandages and matches. Couple months later, just before winter was going to hit a man shows up in a plane. The guy in the plane was the man Brian had talked
He has to adapt to these new essentials - coconuts, tree bark, etc - and now has to use his new inventions - like shoes and an axe - to save his life and get him off the island.
Back in the Stone Age, the early man created tools to help them do everyday tasks they needed to survive. In document #2, figure 2 shows a variety of tools and weapons created by early man such as bows, arrows, and spear throwers and so on. The materials needed to make these include bones, antlers, and teeth because they were durable. Some types of tools that early man made was sharper blades for hunting, fishhooks for fishing, and needles for sewing. In document #5, a picture shows a group of people doing tasks to help out with the community. One woman is crafting fur/skin into clothes, another woman is taking care of a child and the men are hunting for food. Without tools, these tasks would take a longer time to accomplish and would be even harder to do. Depending on the group, the cultures could be different, which could effect on how they make a
These examples show both the author’s and the protagonist’s challenge to the order of things and the complete belief the character has. The best example of this is on line eight when the king says that he ‘shall not give you the boat’ the man replies ‘with calm assurance’ ‘you will’.
