Religion in America
Religion had both positive and negative impact on the lives of Americans before the Civil war. It influenced the morals, rules and regulations of the colonies. Most of the colonies were established based on Christian beliefs and values. There was great religious diversity; Massachusetts was populated with pilgrims and puritans, the Quakers in Pennsylvania and Catholics in Maryland. Each colony believed in their faith and expected everyone to follow their religion. Puritans believed that they had been ordained by God to create a puritan society and did not believe in religious tolerance. The Catholics on the other hand dominated Maryland and the Quakers dominated Pennsylvania. Catholics and Protestants did not approve of each other religion. During the seventeenth century, Europeans established colonies in North America. The English colonies were originally established because proprietors from England were granted charters to govern lands. Other European colonies were established around trading posts. Over time, the English gained control of the thirteen colonies through force or purchase; eventually, the regions were known as the Southern, Middle, and New England Colonies. Although both New England and Southern colonies share several commonalities, they differ in how they treat women, Africans, their religion, and their government.
Religion wasn’t central to life in the Southern Colonies but still influenced its followers. The presence of religious toleration in the New England Colonies helped steer people of minor faiths to immigrate to the New England colonies from the Old World and within the New World. The New England colonists were usually more dedicated to religion, where the Southern Colonists seemed to care more about economic growth and opportunity than practicing

The first generation of Puritans that settled in, were very into creating a new society, and they had a burning passion to make a population of their beliefs. This led to very strict Puritan laws that favored church members greatly over any other citizen. The church controlled many parts of

Puritans strongly believed that there were certain people predestined to go to heaven and the others were damned to hell and there was nothing to be done to change that. This is the reason they ended up in America they did not like having to share a church with those predestined for hell so they broke from the church of England. Economically, a large amount of money was spent on building new churches and financial aid was given to ministers. Massachusetts was the first colony to tax residents to support the Congressionalist Church. Also, during the Great Awakening, churches were making attempts to return those individuals who roamed away from the church. The Great Awakening was a revival caused by Jonathon Edwards during the enlightenment time period. The purpose of this revival was to inspire communities to become more religiously involved as pastors were feeling distant from god because of the lack of interest in religion at the time. The Great Awakening undermined the Old Clergy and increased both the number and competiveness of churches. Thousands of books were published and sold to bring the churches profit and therefore allowed more money to aid in the churches construction. Socially, religion brought people together. People of the same religion often worked better together which resulted in a stronger and closer community. Schools were developed for children to learn to read the bible and to teach young men leadership. While proper Christianity dignifies one by means of high morals and a well-trained conscience, improper Christianity as promoted by slave-owning America degrades the moral nature of its followers. Stowe often uplifts the Christian religion of elementary slaves over that of educated America. The country was not being educated in the love and faith of true religion, but rather slavery had precipitated the education of brutality in the South. Christianity in its truest sense promotes positive action on behalf of those wronged by a cruel system. Divine love proves to be an effective foundation for social action.
