The Civil War was fought because of slavery issues between the North and the South. When the war began neither side was prepared, but they each had strengths. The Union had the advantages of man power and also of resources. The Union had most of the nation’s industrial strength and railroads. The Union had far greater resources that met the demand for war. The loss of manpower to the army took a toll on the south. During the Civil War the North had double the population than the south. The North also had double the railroad tracks. The South had smarter commanders than the North. The North had way more in uniform. This could have a lot to do with the population difference too. The North 2.1 million men in uniform and the south only had 800,000
The north has always been more advanced than the south, the south has always held on to old traditions, traditions that many have held them back technologically. The northern population was twice the population of the south, despite the large number of fatalities that occurred during the war the north still had soldiers to send into the war. The soldiers themselves in a way became expendable, no matter how many lives lost the north continued to send soldiers into this war. Though the south didn't have as many advancements as the north they still had a home advantage over the northerners. The South by the time of the war was seceding from the union which forces the north to advance into enemy territory which was good for the south because they were fighting on familiar land. Most military schools were based in the south, schools in which created great and powerful generals, naturally these generals felt a certain loyalty to the south so they join the confederate army. New technological innovation in military weapons also occurred during this war. Previous to this war, soldiers commonly carrier standard muskets, which only carried about one bullet and did not give much range for accuracy. By the time of the war soldiers began using repeating rifles and a new kind of bullet, “ The Minie Ball”, introduced by the French. This bullet used with the repeating rifle was fatal, the bullet ripped through flesh and bone killing most of it victims, the combination of the rifle and the bullet was primarily the cause the number of lives lost in the war. This war had more fatalities than any war fought in the U.S today
The North and the South prior to the Civil War was different in many ways.
Neither North or South was ready to go into a major war. With the North having a US Army and a US Navy it made the North have a better advantage. Another reason that they North was at a better advantage was because of the agricultural and industrial backing. The Southern landscape was a big part when it came to the civil war. The South did not have any resources making it hard for both citizens and soldiers to live.
The North was able to recruit many soldiers to fight in the civil war. Having more soldiers in the North helped carry out better attacks on the South as well as defeat more Confederate soldiers. In,”Strengths and Weaknesses: North vs. South”, it states,”On paper, the Union outweighed the Confederacy in almost every way. Nearly 21 million people lived in 23 Northern states.” (ushistory.org).
There were various reasons as to why the South suffered a major downfall, and loss in the American Civil War. The South did have several advantages from its vast amount of land, to its trained soldiers who possessed many skills, to its knowledge of the land since it was familiar land to them. However, the North had various advantages from it advantages in both their amount in soldiers and resources, to the having great financial resources, to being higher than the South industrially, to having a strong navy, and to having more railroad systems and a greater leader. Both also had disadvantages, from the South having fewer factories, to having a smaller population compared to the North because almost one-third of the population was made up
Most of the guns and ammunition were created in the north, while the south relied on good sent to them from other countries and their allies. Canteens also helped the soldiers because it allowed them to carry water with
Leading up to the Civil war in the 1860’s there was a lot of differences between the North and the South. The South still treated blacks like slaves and hated that they breathed the same air as them. The North freed the slaves and were somewhat okay with the blacks. Racism was a big thing for both the North and South but was bigger in the South. Even though the racial difference was a big thing there was still a lot of major differences like the economy, culture, and the cities.
For starters, let us just clear this up: the North and South were considered polar opposites back in the 1800s. Almost everything each side chose to do would classify as antonyms. Their fighting styles also fall under this category. The Northerners had an abundant flow of extra soldiers while the Southerners had just enough troops to fight one battle.
The Union won the American Civil War and reunited the country for several different reasons that changed over time. The North had advantages and successes that ebbed and flowed throughout the course of the war, while the South continued to make the same mistakes. A combination of Union success and Confederate failures ended the war in favor of the North and without one of them; it is hard to judge the outcome of the war. At the start of the war, the Union had a clear advantage in manpower and resources, which lasted throughout the war.
Even though the United States was a joint country, there were many social, economic, and political differences that occurred between the North and South before the Civil War. The North always had more than the South. Some kids in the South had little to no education. The South had very little things. They lived in the same country but the way they did things were different.
The South had outstanding military officers. They had strong military officers because most of them had experience from the Mexican War.(North and South Strengths and Weaknesses pg. 1). The South was fighting for their lives so they had good motivation to fight hard to stay alive. They had to fight for their lives because if they were to die they didn’t have many people that could fight. That is why the North had the advantage of the population because they had 22 million people. Another advantage that the South had was that they were fighting on home soil so they had known the land. This was a disadvantage for North because they were unfamiliar with the land. Another advantage that the South had was the geography. The landscape of the South provided good defense and also a economic advantage. Also, the South was a agricultural society due to the climate and fertile lands. Cash crops such as tobacco and cotton were turning into money trees due to the growing textile industries. This was a economic advantage for the
For one, the North wasn’t as united as the South. While the Confederacy fought for their way of life, the North fought for politicians (Confederate States). They were also fighting in unknown territory. In order to win, they would have to seize control over a large area of land (Davidson and Stoff pg 488). Finally, the North couldn’t find a good military leader for most of the war. Most of the military colleges were in the South, so the North was at a huge disadvantage in leadership and skill (Confederate States).
The Civil War was a very gruesome war. The war had become the Union (North) and the Confederacy (South). During the war the union and confederacy had many weaknesses and strengths. Some of them are technology, army/military and government.
An army of soldiers requires an enormous amount of supplies, so one would therefore need to have the means to thereby create those supplies. The North was well industrialized by the time of the Civil War, whereas the South was still highly dependent on slave labor, which hindered their ability to industrialize.4 When it came to producing weapons, uniforms, shoes, preserved food, tools for more effective farming to feed soldiers, the telegraph, and other necessities, the Union was way in the lead. They could not only create these products, but they could produce them in mass amounts in a fraction of the time it originally took to make them.5 The South had a hard time enduring the war because they did not have the factories necessary to produce the quality and mass amount of supplies they needed.
When we think about the Civil War, we have to wonder what if the South would have prevailed. Where would we be now? There were a lot of factors that went into the defeat of the South. Like any team and like modern teams now it came down to who wanted it more? The North did just about anything to defeat the south. I believe the North was an established country. They adapted and taught each other how to work together. Their colossal size man power was stronger and mixed with all races. "The North's advantages in manpower, resources, and industrial capacity were clearly overwhelming."(Hollitz pg288) The North asserted the freed slaves to join them in their Fight. Whereas the South did not and waited a while before resorted to allowing the black
