What nutritional problem is common in children in India? Neural tube defects are defects found in the brain and spine that are present at birth. They usually appear during a woman’s first month of pregnancy. Neural tube defects are preventable with the use of a folic acid supplement before and during pregnancy. Folic acid is a B vitamin that can prevent an infant from developing a neural tube defect (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). All of the vitamins in the vitamin B classification have been of specific concentration lately. The vitamins in the vitamin B classification are the following: vitamin B12, vitamin B6, zinc and folate. Deficiencies in vitamin B12 and folate are thought to contribute to neural tube defects …show more content…
Many times a woman does not know she is pregnant so she does not take a folic acid supplementation. Women should be consuming .4mg of folic acid before and during pregnancy. Women that have had a neural tube defect pregnancy should take 4.0 mg of folic acid a day to prevent another neural tube defect pregnancy. Women should continue taking folic acid supplements through the first trimester (Kumar, 2009).
A deficiency in folate can play a role in the development of neural tube defects in infants. The authors found that low zinc levels and high copper levels may also play a role in neural tube defects (Kumar, 2009). Folic acid has been fortified in enriched grains, such as, rice, cereal, bread and pasta. Rice is one of India’s staple foods. Rice fortification may help reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Older children have been studied and fortified rice eliminated the micronutrient deficiency in folate. (Thankachan, et al., 2012) The hope is that women will eat enough of these foods to prevent a folate deficiency (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). An earlier report found that 4.1 infants with neural tube defects out of 1,000 total births reported having neural tube defects in India. The authors found that different states of India report different numbers of neural tube defects. This is due to availability for food, poverty in certain areas and availability of folic acid supplements. Each state had a different
Children and young people’s health and development is closely linked to their dietary choice as they need the right amount of nutrients necessary to keep their energy and to maintain the body for growth, tissue repair, healthy skin, hair and teeth, red blood cells and strong immune system.
The researchers depended on birth defects statistics which can be found in medical record to support their results about the effect of folic acid fortification on NTDs (Chen et al., 2008). This data showed that although there was a declining in NTDs’ prevalence in prefortification, the NTDs’ prevalence did not continue to decline in postfortifcation (Chen et al., 2008). Hence, this study’s results conflict with the results of De Wals et al’s study which claimed that folic acid fortification decreases the NTDs’ prevalence after the full fortification period (De Wals et al., 2008).
Deficiency of the micronutrient folate continues to significantly affect the health of pregnant women and their children, globally. A great cause of concern with folate deficiency is the occurrence of Neural Tube Defects (NTDs) in new-born babies due to abnormal early foetal development. According to Greene et al. (2016), NTDs are abnormalities to the formation of the brain, spinal cord or related structures from early foetal development. The rate of the prevalence of NTDs varies between countries from 0.3 to 199.4 cases per 10,000 births. In Australia specifically, approximately 19.5 cases of NTDs occurred per 10,000 cases between 2009 and 2010 (Zaganjoy et al.,
* Baby need sources of vitamins and minerals and sources of vitamin D including oil, fish, eggs, cereals.
Children who are malnourish and vitamin A deficient are two times more likely to die compare to those receiving a vitamin A supplement. This increase in mortality rate is due to the vulnerability state of the child that caused by lack of nutrition. Moreover, the scarcity of the proper mineral and vitamins for pregnant mothers has cause more than 13 million underweight and premature births. Over the years Vitamins B, D, and C have proven to cure disease such as pellagra, rickets and scurvy and although this might seem easy fixes for the richer
Spina Bifida is a neural tube defect that is present at birth. It is thought to be caused by a folic acid deficiency in the first month of pregnancy. This disease can be either symptomatic or asymptomatic. There are three types of Spina Bifida including: Spina Bifida Occulta, Spina Bifida Meningocele, and Spina Bifida Myelomeningocele. The main treatment for Spina Bifida is surgery that occurs right after birth to close the spinal opening and could include several more surgeries throughout the child’s life.
I believe that CEOs should be compensated based off of their qualifications. Many CEO's possess both the educational and professional experience credentials to command significant salaries. In comparison to most middle level managers and employees, they are also paid according to their education and experience.
From around 500 to 300 B.C.E, in Ancient Greece, the area had many contributions to modern Western civilization. Ancient Greece influenced Western civilization politically and socially. Ancient Greece influenced Western civilization with the spread of democracy and impacted Western civilization socially with its style of architecture using columns and the ancient Olympics.
According to this chart, more than half of the babies born during this experiment were born with neural tube defects. This result was skewed because all but three of the babies born to the group that did not take folic acid until after conception were born with
The prevalence went down from Oct 1998 to Dec 1999 was 2.02 per 10,000 live births. It reduced by 22.9% (Mark, 2016). Later in the years from 1999-2000 and 2003-2005, the prevalence of spina bifida falls by 6.9%. The reason of the decrease is still unknown. This decreases the prevalence of spina bifida with black population, but not within the white or Hispanic population. Those frequencies about spina bifida had been evaluated toward 1-2 cases for every 1000 population, with certain population hosting a greater frequency based on genetic predilection. Research showed folate can reduce spina bifida by 70% and decrease the severity of the disease. Myelomeningocele is the most common form of spina bifida. In the United States, approximately 1500 babies are born with myelomeningocele each year (Mark, 2016). The myelomeningocele and other neural tube defect had been declined since 20th century. According to CDC, the prevalence of spina bifida is higher in white and Hispanic population, than in the black population. According to Mark, spina bifida is detected 2 and 1.96 per in 10,000 live birth in Hispanic and white population and 1.74 per 10,000 live birth in black
A birth defect is preventable if the mother would take folic acid prior of becoming pregnant (U.S. Department of Health and Services, 2016). These reduce the chances of having a defect by 50-70% for neural tube defects. Some recommendations such as having a healthy weight, not to use illegal drugs, getting vaccinated, taking prenatal and or during pregnancy vitamins, having recommended screening test, controlling
It is a recognised certainty that nutrition is a fundamental requirement to sustain a healthy lifestyle and is also extremely valuable when recovering from an illness or an injury. Nutrients are absorbed in the body and this physiological process is essential for homeostasis and ensuring equilibrium is sustained within the body as without enough food and drink the body will not function correctly (Edwards & Thomas, 2009). This essay will provide information on folic acid and its properties, its role and the midwife’s role and responsibility in informing women in the early stages of pregnancy
The meaning of our code “Integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do” as we progress into AFJROTC makes our current cadets think about those words as I have myself, though to other people these could have different meanings. Integrity first doesn’t only mean being honest, but integrity is being honest through thick and thin never wanting nor actually lying to anyone about anything. Keeping honesty can build trust within a group of people even a single person, many people are more likely to trust a person who keeps honesty in their relationship. The AFJROTC cadets have used integrity to get through the program I use integrity in my life to be able and wrap around my head that honesty is one of the best qualities that gets you through life in easier manners.
The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for all men and women 14 and older is 400 mcg. Men often don’t realize this as the benefits to pregnant women are more publicized, but any human being is in need of proper amounts of folic acid to insure the body is able to create new red blood cells to nourish the
Overall, for women 16-44 years of age, the amount of folic acid being consumed was concerningly low initially, with a mean of 102µg/day. Current recommendations provided by the NHMRC (2006) for women at child-bearing age is an intake of at least 400µg of folate per day, with a 500µg daily supplement when trying for a baby. This is particularly with the focus of avoiding the incidence of NTDs in newborn infants. The mean folic acid intake has now increased to 247 µg/day (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2017). In the past, mandatory fortification has also been under scrutiny for reaching those at greatest risk of producing Neural Tube Defects and to be less able to access foods fortified with folate acid, such as pregnant teenagers and Indigenous populations (Baker et al., 2009; Harrison et al., 2007). However, recent data indicates otherwise, likely as the food fortification occurs to bread which is a relatively affordable and available food eaten by most Australians (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2017). Pregnant teenagers gave birth to 54.8% less NTD-effected children after mandatory folic acid fortification. A rate of 74% less NTDs amongst Indigenous women is an even more substantial decline of NTD occurrence, since folic acid fortification of breads became
