What Makes People Act The Way They Do?
By Anthony Burger What makes people act the way they do? We’ve examined three books and have come up with an answer to this question. The question itself sparks many ideas and answers, and we’re going to go through all of those and come up with one final answer in the conclusion.
In The Monkey’s Paw, a man named Sgt. Major Morris comes into Mr. and Mrs. White’s home with a strange talisman in the name of the Monkey’s Paw. It’s use is to possibly grant a wish, but a man had cursed it. When you wish there is a consequence. The first wish Mr. White wishes for is 200 pounds (european money), and ends up with a dead son and 200 pounds in his pocket. What made him act this way? It was greed. He wanted this
Everything is normal until a man that goes by the name Sergeant Morris comes to visit the Whites. He tells the family about something called The Monkey's Paw. He stated, “It's just a bit of what you might call magic.” (Pg.34) Family listens as Sergeant Morris continues to tell them more about the monkey's paw. He went on to tell them that there is a spell on it and that it is able to grant 3 men 3 wishes. W.W Jacobs adds a mysterious tone to the story because where did this item come from and why does it have the ability to grant wishes.
In my studies I have seen that the way we act is basically just a replication of what has been reinforced in our minds for years as we grow up .we know when to act a certain way. Now if you
Jacobs in the direction of effectively introducing the theme. Through the story, the monkey’s paw serves as a powerful symbol of desire and greed. The power that comes with the paw is very tempting even to unselfish people who want nothing and have everything they need. Everything that its owner could possibly wish for is unrestricted. The author demonstrates the avarice that Mr. White has by saying, “He took the paw, and dangled it between his front finger and thumb, suddenly threw it upon the fire.
| A rich and detailed method to capture how and why people behave in certain ways and the impact of these processes on behaviour.
The causes of conformity among individuals have long been debated and researched in recent decades. It is for this reason that conformity is an intriguing psychological concept. It causes sound-minded individuals to go against their best judgement, to engage in behaviour which they usually would not engage in, even accept and welcome an idea they internally disagree with, all in order to not be a deviant from the group. It is thus interesting to look at the factors which cause people to conform, to do what they see others doing, to rely on the judgements of the group, and to ignore their own senses and perceptions. It is the reasons for the individual's desire to conform that I will be discussing in this paper.
The short story “The Monkey’s Paw” focused on the characters the whites, who had fine lives, but risked it all for no reason. The White’s had a visitor, and, he tried to warn them about the danger of the monkey’s paw. “‘I threw it on the fire. If you keep it, don’t blame me for what happens. Pitch it on the fire again, like a sensible man’’(Jacobs 2). The White’s did not seem to care about his advice. Later, their son used a joking tone when telling his father to wish for two hundred pounds. Little did the Whites know, that wishing upon the paw for two hundred pounds would cost their son his life. They did end up receiving their two hundred pounds, but, it was the money from their son’s job after he was crushed in a machinery accident. But yet again, as if the white’s learned nothing, they wanted another wish granted. Mrs. White however was very persistent and kept yelling at her husband. “‘The paw!’ she cried wildly. ‘The monkey’s paw!’” (Jacobs 5). Eventually her husband gave into her pleas, and wished their
There are different types of people in the world, as they all have different behavior, personality, and culture. Everyone has a different view of what makes good people do bad things. It is amazing how such calm and nice people turn into such a bad people. There must be a psychology reason in order for them to turn like this. There are some factors I would like to know and also discuss of why people behave this way. Therefore, a person with different behavior makes them act different and hence, that impacts on a person’s personality which makes them turn from good person to bad person.
“What makes people behave in the way they do?” A question that has intrigued philosophers for millennia, and helps philosophy departments all over the world to continue to receive their limited budgets. Answer to this question are wide ranging, and have changed throughout time. Religions point to their gods and doctrines to find an answer. Ancient thinkers varied this religious answer somewhat by referring to some immaterial spirit that is found in human nature that makes us different from other animals that inhabit the Earth. Over time the answer to this eternal question came to result in lines of thinking that a person’s race or economic class determined their behavior and thus this lead to Nazism and Communism. The death tolls were horrifically catastrophic in both cases. Also in the twentieth century social scientists began to believe that all human behavior was the result of the environment a person grew up in, and through social engineering the ills of society, such as violence, greed, etc, could all be cured. These cures remain elusive. As technology and understanding of the human brain advanced, theories were put forth that genetics, or DNA determined how a person behaved.
Human behavior has been a mystery to scientists and psychologists for years. What causes humans to act the way they do? Is it learned by experience, or inherited from prior generations? The human brain is a complex machine driven by numerous intangibles that influence our thinking process directly and indirectly.
The purpose of this essay is to outline and evaluate at least three psychological perspectives of human behaviour. The three approaches that will be summarised are humanistic, social learning theory and the Biological approach. They will also be criticised and compared to one another. A brief description on psychology will occur, and there will also be a short summarisation on some key early influences of psychology, from its origins in philosophy.
Questions to the human mind have been sought over for decade’s even centuries. The human mind sometimes known as the psyche or as others would call it a “soul” is one of the most complex and incredibly fascinating things to study. The mind is simply not something you unravel overnight, psychologist and others alike have been studying it for a long time trying to unlock its mysteries. Questions like what makes the foundation for a personality? Why do we do what we do? What is a person thinking while they are reacting to something, do they weigh the pros and cons or just dive right in? There are so many questions of the like that have yet to been answered or explained. This article is designed to give a better understanding of the human mind by research through the Biological, Cognitive, and Behavioral Approaches.
In the story of the “Monkey’s Paw” about the White family, it is ruled by destiny. One reason why this story’s theme is destiny is because when the White Family was precisely told that the Monkey Paw would lead to great danger, they were still persistent on keeping it. Sergeant-Major Morris says, “I threw it on the fire. If you keep it, don't blame me for what happens. Pitch it on the fire again, like a sensible man (Jacobs 2).” This comment to Mr. White from Morris is a drastic statement. He clearly tells Mr. White of the great danger, but the White’s are too curious and are relentless. Another reason why “The Monkey’s Paw” is ruled by destiny is when the White’s receive the paw, and make their first wish. It is to be granted with two-hundred pounds (money). They are not very clear with their wish and with the ‘gift’ of two-hundred pounds comes their son’s death. The White’s greediness of money leads to their son’s death and when the second wish is made for him
As humans there are both similarities and differences among the different people and cultures in the world. Several aspects of human experience that are common to all people are kinship, security, and have their own highly regarded ideas and dreams. These are universal because common human nature is rooted in all humans that have been observed by anthropologists throughout the centuries. Several major kinds of differences between people are the argument between modernization and traditionalism; the division of power between classes, government, and the people; and bonds within the family unit; the perception of a woman’s role. I believe the differences to be more important than the similarities.
This paper is divided into three main parts: the first part of this paper attempts a discussion on what shall form the explanations for the various ways in which people behave. In the course of her discussion, the author of this paper premises her discussion upon the following related matters; factors which influence peoples’ behavior, explanations on the reasons behind different ways in which people behave, and lastly will the author discuss the importance of studying behavior of
Cancer is still seen by many as an incurable disease that slowly takes over healthy human tissue, and ultimately causes death. 2Through advances in medical science, different physical procedures have been developed to treat cancer – for example, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. In recent years however, there has been a growing perception by cancer specialists and patients that the onset and treatment of cancer may be affected by psychological factors. A new field of research called psycho-oncology has emerged to investigate how the mind can slow down, or even reverse, the progress of cancer. The results from such studies however, have not always been conclusive, and in the case of retrospective studies, have often proved
