As America has grown more diverse, the definition of an American has changed through the past centuries. America is not what it used to be, our nation no longer cares about giving and caring for others. Americans are so caught up in the commotion of being on top and not about what goes on in the world around them. There are many reasons the definition of an American has changed but these are just a few of the generalized reasons: how Americans no longer care for giving, society changing, and the desire for wanting more. Throughout history, there have been widespread changes of what it means to be an American. Today, everything is about gratification and pleasure. One can do whatever they want to someone, but they dare not do it back. Anything
Sweeney explains in the article how the American standards have fallen in the last generation and how being an American has become a joke to the public. American citizens don’t take pride in their civic duties or the “American dream”. Our history is being thrown out because of the negative views of the era and younger citizens are using that as an excuse
America was not always the successful country that it is today and some Americans were once not actually from the United States. Instead, the states stemmed off from different cultures around Europe, the land being split between many big contenders like Britain, Spain, and even France. The thirteen colonies were the start of the US and would eventually become rebellious enough to break away from the system that they had once lived under. The states undergone construction to build a new government and a new way of life for the generations that would come. After two hundred and thirty nine years of practicing and figuring out our way of life, America has both succeeded and dropped in many areas. The definition of America has certainly changed throughout the years, but one thing
Today some Americans are very stubborn. Just like the 1800’s Americans stick to their own beliefs but are lazy in when owning up to responsability. Some American teenagers use excuses to get away with things commonly today. The difference between now and then is that Americans adapt to change as country instead of a divided one (Civil War,2010).
To be an American isn’t always about having nice cars and big mansions throughout different time periods the idea of being an American has changed. The Pre-Revolutionary War Era, the building of a Nation Era and the World War Era all contribute to the way being an American is thought of. In times of disgraces or economic prosperity America has always stood together but dreams were changed.
When we think about American culture today, we usually think about the 4th of July, barbecuing, Donald Trump and football. We have centered our culture around ourselves and have not given much thought about the good of our country like our founders did when they wanted to avoid a tyrannical leader. In United States history, we have changed our culture due to given circumstances and becoming the “World’s Leading Power”, that we did not have to face the struggles that the colonists had to go through. Those struggles in the 1700’s had shaped American cultures and what they valued.
Being an American in the 21st century to me means giving up what my four fathers worked hard for. The government is trying to take the American peoples heritage away from the people that defended it under their own free will. The right to bear arms is suddenly in question because of a single individuals actions. Our freedom of religion is frowned upon in fear of insulting the person beside them.
Can someone understand the meaning of being American, if they don’t understand the magnitude of history, blood, sweat, and tears that went into even making being American possible? Can one even dream to love this country without this knowledge? To love this country and to be American is to know what the come to pass, and what the future might hold.
In today’s society more and more Americans are being judged based on their appearance and not their character. Furthermore it has been shown that Americans are the most ignorant out of all cultures. In addition to being called names and targeted by government officials has brought the prison system at an all-time high. Basically people are being judged in society without knowing the person's background or even a last name. Being brought up in a world where slavery was a past time traditions seems like nothing has changed in America. They say all Americans
Today’s society is nothing like we want it to be and how we are supposed to define America. We are supposed to be “the land of the free and the home of the brave” but it is nothing like that. We have people who are considered a minority because of skin color, slavery, laws blocking the constitution, and are fed lots of lies from government. We are living in a country that is unfair and is slowly falling apart day by day. This country is completely divided and there is only laws protecting certain people. Our country has the dominant and the oppressed and there is rarely anyone in between.
During the past 239 years there have been major events that have converted the commonly named American to what they are known as today. Throughout time it can be easily observed that the term “An American” has been altered quite extensively. With major events happening, it is obvious the term has transformed. Nevertheless, do the people of the United States truly know what their identity has developed into? Major events such as the Civil War and the modified respect for some genders and immigrants have all converted the way an American is viewed by different countries and by how Americans view themselves.
For many Americans, the America we loved has slipped farther away from sight. The American culture has been swept aside and multi-cultureism has taken its place. Freedom of speech has been put on hold because we have become a P.C. society. We are supposed to have freedom of religion in this country, but now freedom from religion has taken its place. All this and more brought on by the Obama
Early America was a place for anyone to live their life the way that they wanted, as it is now, but back then this was a new concept. Much of this idea comes from the freedoms obtained by living here. Many other countries in the world had many freedoms, but not as numerous as they were in America shortly after the country was founded. Americans during the late 1700's and early 1800's embraced their freedoms and became leaders and expanders, and what we now consider the founders of many present-day cities and towns. One thing that has been present throughout the generations of people living in America, is the desire to set themselves apart from other nations. This want was supplied to the American
Although America may be different from all other countries, its people may not have always felt this way. According to Henry Lucy’s “The American Century,” American people
Every generation has their own ideal of the “perfect American”, and each generation seemingly losing the right of free thinking more and more. Our society is releasing the grip on the freedom to have an opinion that doesn’t agree with the minds of others. Minds are being persuaded to think a certain way in order to have a sense of belonging. Opinions are being forced down the throats of youth in America. Opinions that correspond with major topics such as race, gender stereotypes, or gender orientation are the topics that people have forced their opinion into the circuit for many years. Through the generations the right to an opinion has changed a great deal. Going from two major opinions to allowing for everyone to have their own is how the negative and positives of Americans have evolved. Along with free thinking the change in work ethic is a main change that is shown through the generations.
How does my generation define what it means to be an American to today is easy. There are a lot of ways to be an American today. But some of these are really important to me or people in our generation today. There are four reasons I can come up with for this writing exactly. First reason is where your parents, grandparents, great grandparents all came from. Secondly, how you treat other races in your area/our world. Finally to the last one, how electronics are today.
