Though many people think William Bradford was just a man who wrote, Of the Plymouth Plantation, he is more than just that. William Bradford was a man full of courage, braveness and conviction. He bravely sailed across one of the most vast oceans, the Atlantic Ocean. He showed conviction in his work in reforming the Church of England. William Bradford was courageous in leading the Separatists as one of the first Plymouth governors. He successfully started the Plymouth colony with the help of the natives. William Bradford grew up under the care of his two uncles after the death of his mother and father. William’s education was limited, due to his continuous sickness. Instead of attending school, he studied the Bible and classical literature at home.

Once, William Brewster and some of the members of the Separatist group were arrested, because their weekly meetings caught the attention of the Archbishop of York. The Separatist then decided to leave England for the Netherlands because of the persecution they faced. While trying to escape, some of the Separatist members were caught again, this time including William Bradford. They were turned in to the authorities by a sea captain, who was suppose to take them to the Netherlands. Somehow though, they managed to escape in small groups.
