Introduction “During the whole of the dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens. I looked upon the features of the domain upon a few rank sees and upon a few white trends of decayed trees with an utter depression of soul which I can compare to no earthly sensation.”(pg.1) This quote effectively expresses the darkness and terrifying aura that the setting creates. Example 1: “The Fall of the House of Usher” “The Fall of the House of Usher” written by Edgar Allen Poe is a sad and horrifying story of how the narrator visits his friend Roderick Usher. He was one of the two last people left in the Usher family, which is an ancient clan that was currently falling. He plans a great way to get rid of his enemy, which first took place at a carnival. They meet and Montresor convinces Fortunato and takes him to a catacomb. There Montresor tricks him into drinking a large amount of alcohol making his enemy very vulnerable. Montresor then puts Fortunato into an area and starts putting bricks walls in-front of the drunk man. He than completely finishes and leaves him to die, thus accomplishing his great plan. In this story there are two main settings that are significant to the theme and understanding of the story. The first one is the carnival, a carnival normally is known to be a happy place where people have fun. This mainly shows how there will be no harm to anyone in this current situation, thus being able to understand the story better. The theme in this situation is still not very dark nor horrific, it is rather normal when taking out the fact that the narrator is trying to get revenge on a man. The second setting is the catacomb. The catacomb is a place full of dead people all turned into skulls and bones. This is obviously an unhappy place creating the theme of the story into something scary and horrific. It tells the readers that something related to the theme is going to occur; maybe death. This is clear proof of how the setting of a story can be able to significantly increase the understanding and enhance
