Net neutrality is a principle that has defended American citizens from internet service providers such as AT&T and Verizon from corrupting individuals internet access. For instance, the principle prevents the speeding up, slowing down or the blockage of any content in applications or websites and charging customers extra fees for high-speed internet. However, that principle is currently being discussed by the F.C.C. whether to repeal Net Neutrality or continue with the principle. The F.C.C. chairman, Ajit Pai proposed the idea and while big internet services such as the ones mentioned agree with the removal of net neutrality since it will give them more leverage over the income they will receive. Yet, others such as Google, Facebook and Amazon
After Obama’s Presidency, President Trump believed that net neutrality is a principle that limits the progress and innovation of many companies. In addition, President Trump claimed that he heard a lot of complains about net neutrality; therefore, he decided to take actions and support the repealment of net neutrality. A Republican named Ajit Pai, recently appointed as the chairman of FCC, started to raise voice against the principle of net neutrality. Note that Ajit Pai is also a former lawyer of Verizon. Ajit Pai argued that “higher profits for broadband companies would allow them to invest and expand their networks to rural America.” Furthermore, he claimed that “Entrepreneurs are constantly developing new technology and services. But too
It is often regarded as the notion that, the broadband service provider should charge customers only for Internet access without any form of discrimination or favoritism on content viewed by end-users from their respective content providers. The concept of “Net Neutrality” is intended to regulate price and promote competition. Simply put, it is a premised on the principle that all Internet traffic must be treated equally without bias. “Opponents of the Net neutrality on the other hand, see bandwidth as a private resource, one that is supplied most efficiently if exclusive owners take responsibility for managing and conserving it, and are able to optimize its value by exerting control over the content and application it conveys” (Yoo,
But what exactly is Net neutrality? Net neutrality means cable companies such as Time Warner Cable and Verizon cannot charge more for faster internet speeds. Which means everybody who uses the internet will have the same speed. Hence the word neutrality. Verizon communication sued the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) saying that they do not have jurisdiction over that subject and limiting speeds is a violation of the First Amendment. "The FCC says Net neutrality rules are designed to preserve the internet as an open platform enabling consumer Choice, freedom of expression, and end-user control, competition, and the freedom to innovate without permission." This case went to the US court of appeals for the DC circuit. The courts ruled in favor of a Verizon. The reasoning for the decision is that “FCC has no authority to apply common-carrier obligation like non-discrimination and no-blocking rules to broadband providers.” I agree with this decision. The reason is that the internet should not be like electricity. If you plug your phone into the wall to charge. It's going to have the same amount of current as someone else charging their phone. But what happens if I want to charge my phone faster? I can’t because electricity is neutral. But when I go on the internet and I see it is slow. What happens if I want to make it faster? With Net neutrality I could not make it faster. I want the option to make my internet faster. And what happens to large corporations where internet speed is essential to stay in business? The fact of the matter is that the FCC does not have jurisdiction over this matter. Net neutrality should never be passed. It will only hurt the consumer. In addition, the FCC approved of a $9.25 monthly charge to help low-income families connect to the internet. Three out of the five Commissioners voted for the subsidy plan. This approval is one part of the reform of the fund
order had created a set of three primary rules for net neutrality to govern how broadband
(Statement and rebuttal) On November, 21 2017, the F.C.C (Federal Communication Commision) approved a plan made by the F.C.C. Chairman Ajit Pai. His plan consisted in repealing net neutrality to make the internet a safe and better place. Net neutrality is a principle that states that every app, website, and platform should be treated equally. Since the F.C.C. approved this plan, people have been worried about what is going to happen to the internet. People is worried because when the F.C.C. repealed net neutrality they also repealed all the rules that were part of it. Those rules avoided ISP (Internet Service Providers) of blocking, and throttling of every website, app, and platform, but there is something that people doesn’t know. Most of
In the above article and video, the concept of the FCC voting to cease net neutrality in the upcoming month is discussed. The Federal Communications Commission is the independent branch of the U.S. government, which helps regulate communications via radio, television, and internet. Currently, the FCC has laws and rules set in place governing the existence of a “net neutrality”. New neutrality, also called the Open Internet” is essentially what allows all United States citizens to view and post whatever they please online, without it being blocked or limited by a third party or network provider. However, on December 14th the FCC will be voting on whether or not to “rollback” net neutrality, with chairman Ajit Pai at the helm of the limited internet
Federal Communications Commission, otherwise known as the FCC, voted two-to-one in May of 2017, to begin the tearing down of the net neutrality law (Rushe), that which protected individuals from companies that purposefully slowed down service lanes so as to regulate what was being broadcasted across computers. Chief internet official Ajit Pai at the FCC stated that he believed that the dismantling of the net neutrality laws could pave the way for a more competitive marketplace, that which would “lift ‘heavy-handed’ internet regulations that overly restricted internet providers” (White). The repealing of net neutrality seems to mainly garner approval from big companies, such as Verizon, and more recently, Comcast, companies that would do well by the repealing of such a law. With net neutrality gone companies such as those listed above would be able to, legally, regulate and control what people saw on the internet by slowing down or speeding up lanes depending on the affiliation the company has with that specific website (Finley). However, even with Title II in effect, some companies have found a way to circumvent those rules in order to ‘play favorites’ as it were. For instance, when AT&T customers access the Direct TV’s streaming service they may find that the data extrapolated from the service used did not count towards their current data limit’s (Finley). It is also believed that with no regulations in place regarding net neutrality, companies have the potential of becoming dictators and blocking
As previously stated, net neutrality is a complex subject and it has many layers. One issue of major of concern is that of “fast lanes” and the establishment of net neutrality would prevent ISPs from forming these types of connections. Simplified, a fast lane is line of service that provides faster upload and download speeds. A fast lane would allow ISPs to charge companies such as Netflix, Skype, PlayStation Plus, and other streaming services for faster connections that would allow consumers to access the services easier and faster. Proponents of net neutrality worry that the extra expenses for fast lanes could become a formidable challenge for startups and small business owners. Large corporations typically
Net Neutrality is the principle that Internet Service provider’s should treat all content on the internet equally. Most people in the United States of America want to keep net neutrality. However, the Federal Communications Commission’s chairman, Ajit Pai, wants to stop net neutrality, so many people are protesting to keep net neutrality. Net neutrality promotes innovation and allows freedom, but is seen as unnecessary by the Federal Communications Commission.
The internet is an immense part of everyone’s lives, whether it’s used for work, school, or entertainment and it’s at risk. The federal communications commission (FCC) is planning to end net neutrality, which is a big deal. Net neutrality or open internet is the principle of having free, equal access to the internet, without having to pay or have internet service providers blocking and slowing down websites. For many years, people have been fighting to keep the internet free, and big companies and the FCC have been fighting back. Fighting to keep net neutrality has never been more important than now because the vote to end net neutrality is on December. 14. Fighting to keep net neutrality is important because it allows free access to information, free speech and thought, and it helps businesses.
Throughout the last decade, the idea of Net Neutrality has been the topic of many debates. Net Neutrality is the idea that Internet service providers should not be allowed to block their users from any content regardless of its source. The Debate is still continuing in 2017 with the F.C.C planning to repeal Net Neutrality and allow internet providers to completely regulate what their users can see and charge the users extra for “luxuries” such as social media, messaging, email, and music. There are two sides of this argument, one side believes that Net Neutrality should be taken away, while others believe that it is unfair for the Internet providers to have the right to take away the access to any content. Internet providers should not be allowed to control what content one can view when surfing the internet.
I am Aric See and I am a senior in the Weidner School of Inquiry at Plymouth High School in Plymouth Indiana. Net Neutrality is a very important issue facing the United States, with many Republican members of Congress opposing the FCC’s Open Internet Order and the reclassifying of broadband to Telecommunication Services from Information Services. The members of the GOP who are completely against the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) reclassification, and attempts to keep the internet free, give many reasons that are simply not true, such as the FCC’s regulations will destroy the free nature of the internet. Because of the attempts by Congressmen with the GOP to fight the regulations, many Americans, especially small business owners that use the web as a base, feel that their equality and freedoms on the internet will be
Yet at the same time, these two sets of companies compete for customers, creating a glaring conflict of interest. Whilst these issues seemed to be resolved by the middle of the twentieth century, the advent of the internet introduced a whole new set of problems. The term net neutrality, first coined by Tim Wu, Professor of the Columbia University Law School in 2003, came to represent a question that had long been perceived as being of relatively little concern – is unfettered access to the internet a right, or a privilege? (Cheng and Bandyopadhay 2011: 60) (Greenstein 2007: 61, 85) The debate around internet regulation and net neutrality first gained traction in 2002, when the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) controversially ruled that broadband internet was to be classed as an information service rather as a telecommunications service, and thus made it exempt from a considerable range of content and conduct regulations that it would otherwise have been subject to. For those Americans, as exemplified by organizations such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, who saw the internet as a space of uninhibited free expression that needed to be protected from the influence of corporate meddling, this decision was very frustrating. As promoted by Wu and others, net neutrality came to represent the belief that ‘internet data packets should move nondiscriminatorily’ – that is, the data (‘packets’ essentially being a technical
The whole idea of net neutrality is that it allows Americans to be able to access everything. It doesn’t matter the source; internet services providers are not allowed discriminate against specific websites. The problem that Americans wanted to address was that companies were doing . They specifically wanted to address how companies were hindering with the websites they could access and what cannot . Americans did notice and turned to the federal government specifically the Federal Communications Commission to step in (The FCC is an independent government agency) and resolve this national issue. They asked the FCC to “codify the “presumption” of network neutrality into actual regulations to prevent the Internet Service Providers from engaging in preferential or discriminatory treatment for financial gain or just because they felt like it (Public Knowledge).” In other words, Americans wanted to stop ISP’s to stop hindering with the content they access for financial gain , they needed a gatekeeper to prevent ISP’ s from doing this and in so the FCC created the Open Internet Order in 2010.
According to me, Net neutrality is vital. It gives the Internet its character, personalization, and charm. Net neutrality is not something to merely have “thoughts” on. We must act to protect it. Net neutrality is a primary principle of the modern Internet.net neutrality prevents ISPs from favoring one site or service over another. It ensures that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) don’t treat content differently depending on its source. Net neutrality is a series of regulations designed for the average Internet user, not for the cable giants. Removing net neutrality regulations is going to be annoying at best, and downright evil at worst. I just cannot understand Ajit Pai’s argument, because it is flawed as he tirelessly works to remove net neutrality. There is a severe corporate fascist takeover in the USA with Trump’s administration taking charge. The Republican party funded by a lobby of corporations is just showing its true colors. It is essential to understand as to why net neutrality is critical. The multiple reasons are ISP should treat all Internet traffic equally without to regards to the payload within the interchange. But some ISPs wish to control certain types of data (e.g., video streaming) while not controlling others (e.g., email).
