The primary cause of the fall of the Qing dynasty was British merchants smuggling opium into China. British merchants smuggled opium across the border and gave free samples to unsuspecting citizens eventually getting ten percent of China’s population addicted. High levels of homelessness contributed to opium’s appeal because it made users feel less hungry, less stressed, and happier.
