In the Giver by Lois Lowry, the ending to the book raises speculation as to what happened to Jonas. However, Jonas definitely lived.
When Jonas leaves the community, the farther he gets, the more distant and less precise his memories become. There is an idea that Jonas hallucinated before he died, giving him a false perception of reaching the village. Though Jonas did not hallucinate, in fact he did reach the village he described. In the book, the author states he saw a red sled at the top of a hill, one of his favorite memories. Since it was one of his most fond memories, he could hold on to that memory more than others.
