In the play someone comes out and says the prologue but in the movie, the prologue is played on a TV screen. This shows that this is something big because not only is it on a TV screen, it’s being said on the news. When something is on the news, it’s usually this big thing that happened. So playing it on a TV is showing something big is going to happen. The maker of this movie probably put it on a TV screen because the time frame their setting this movie in, that would most likely be where people would hear about what’s going on, and the prologue is what is going on. Also, in the play when Friar Lawrence is sending his letter to Mantua so Romeo knows what’s going on, he sends a messenger doesn’t get to go to Mantua because of the Black Plague. In the movie, however, Friar Lawrence goes to a post office to send his letter and his letters aren’t going through. During the time period this movie is taking place, people don’t have messengers like they do in the time period the play is taking place. People use post offices to send their letters. This would be comical to the viewer because the people in the movie are still speaking Shakespearean language but they are doing modern things, such as using a post office. …show more content…
In the movie, the Prince is the chief of police. If you think about it, it makes sense because in the city, who are the people who always enforce the law and make sure people are staying out of trouble, the police. So having the Prince as a police chief, is actually pretty smart. A prince and police chief pretty much have the same job. Since the viewer of the movie hasn’t lived in Shakespearean times, they don’t know what it feels like. Making the Prince a police chief is a good comparison to show what the Prince would be like to us
Though he did make some cuts that take away from the meaning and characters of the play, the reason often made sense. For example, Juliet’s soliloquy in act 4 scene 3, which is incredibly important because it shows the darkness of Juliet, was cut because the death scene does not take place in a tomb and that is the main topic of her soliloquy. Although the audience missing the dark depression of Juliet in this soliloquy, he compensates for this by making the Juliet scene with her father where he tells her she is going to marry Paris, be much more emotional. Another cut was the death of Paris, which at first seems like an important plot point to leave out, yet other than showing Romeo’s determination to see Juliet, really has no purpose. Luhrmann
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has been modified numerous times and has been a source of inspiration for many playwrights and directors. Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann are examples of directors that use Shakespeare’s legendary tragedy as a basis for their films.
A Comparison of Scenes From West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet Cinematography The scene before the meeting scene in West Side Story Maria spins around in her dress the camera then carries on spinning which creates a colourful blurred effect on the screen. The effect makes her look like she is almost spinning into the next scene. When Tony and Maria meet, all the other characters that were dancing, slow down and fade behind Tony and Maria. The room becomes dark and there is a spotlight on Maria and Tony.
There are many similarities and differences between the sixties version of Romeo and Juliet and the modern version of Romeo and Juliet. It is very easy to spot these differences considering the time period each movie was set in. There are some things in the play that totally got cut from both movies. There are also some things that they added to the movies that weren’t in the play. Let us get on to the similarities and differences.
In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare includes a prologue before the start of the play that reveals much of the plot. The prologue establishes the setting of the play, gives the audience an idea of what will happen, and helps the audience to understand the importance of fate in the play. The first purpose of the prologue is to establish the setting of the play by giving important background information. In the first two lines of the prologue, we learn that the play is set in “fair Verona” and that the characters come from two feuding households that are “both alike in dignity.” Having this information before the start of the play increases the audience’s understanding of the action that will follow. The second purpose of the prologue is to give the audience an idea of what will happen in the
Ever wondered who produced a “Romeo and Juliet,” movie or play, other than Shakespeare himself? If you didn’t well it’s time you do. Franco Zeffirelli is both an Italian producer and director. Zeffirelli was born February 12, 1923 in Florence, Italy. Baz Luhrmann, another producer and director, also produced a movie of “Romeo and Juliet”. Luhrmann’s version took place in modern time, when the Zeffirelli version was closer to the plot of the book. This is why the Zeffirelli does an exceptional job in retelling the tragedy.
In order to compare and contrast the play to the movie, first I will discuss the play .In the play there is a character named Romeo.Lovely Romeo wanted to marry Juliet and stay with her in Verona,Italy. But
Of all the treasures in the world, true love is of the most valued. They say that when you are truly in love, the universe around you simply stops, and no one else matters except you and your love. Love has the mesmerizing beauty of a stunning red rose, but it also has spiteful thorns surrounding it. But between friends and family, love can quickly go from black and white to shades of grey and can become fatal and suspenseful.
The time period of the play and the time period of the movie are very different. In the movie, the prologue was on a T.V. screen and it was not in the play. Also in the movie, they used cars instead of horses to get around. In the movie, Romeo and his friends always smoked and would take drugs and they did not do that in the play. In the play, the different families owned castles and in the movie they own different businesses and buildings. They also had guns instead of swords in the movie. Also in the movie, they dressed more modern than they would have in the play.
Oliver parker's Othello came out in 1995 with Laurence Fishburne as Othello this is also the first time Othello was played by a coloured actor, Kenneth Branagh as Iago and Irene Jacob as Desdemona. Parker kept the original plot and language intact, however the movie seemed to give Othello life through visual and audio aids. Parker's Othello enables the viewer to associate on a personal level and compliments to the anticipation and imagination of those who have read the play before watching the movie.

In the film version of 1996 Romeo snuck into the big flashy party. He had gone to the male bathroom which was split with the women’s by a fish tank full of fish and accessories. Romeo was looking at the fish he started by looking at his height and he was going down, when all of a sudden he seen someone on the other side. When he finally found her again she was dancing with Paris, so he just watched her. When the dance was finished Juliet was standing in front of a Pillar looking for him. Romeo came up and stood behind the pillar talking to her and they
While I feel that the older version did a much better job of representing the original storyline, I still did enjoy watching the second, more modern version. Though it was not as believable as the other, it was much more relatable. I liked that it stayed to the original text that Shakespeare wrote back in 1595 because that meant that it stayed true to the storyline, so certain liberties were not able to be taken. The impact of the story was not compromised just because it was set in a time period that is closer to today. I think that the impact was greater because it was much more like how life is today, which makes it easier to apply what was happen to our lives. It is no longer just some old story that could never happen today, but this movie
Although Ovid and William Shakespeare were born in very different time periods, they share quite similar stories of love and tragedy in their popular works “Pyramus and Thisbe" and The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Ovid first created his story, “Pyramus and Thisbe”, about the romance between two separated lovers. Then, years later, Shakespeare wrote his play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, which shows many signs of influence from Ovid. The stories also share various archetypes that shape their tales. For example, the works both contain classical romances with an ending full of tragedy. Also, there are many guiding factors that are the same, such as the communication between the lovers, their misunderstanding, and the inevitable outcome of their
