Rowland Hussey Macy’s determination and ingenuity paid off at the age of 36 with the launch of R.H. Macy & Co. He adopted a red star as his symbol of success, dating back to his days as a sailor. First-day sales totaled $11.06 but by the end of the first full year, sales grossed almost $90,000. By 1877, R.H. Macy & Co. had become a full-fledged department store occupying the ground space of 11 adjacent buildings. Macy’s entered 2005 with about 240 locations, primarily on the East and West Coasts. With the conversion of all Federated’s
While they may have known about the trademark dilution that it may cause, I feel that they were under the impression that they could get away with it since they are just a small shop. For a small company having a similar name to a large company could spark interest and revenue. At the same time Victor Moseley’s name being used could have honestly just been what they were thinking, and it could have innocently been used. I believe that while they have the right to own a legitimate company and name it how they choose. The fact that the company name was very similar in nature is a shame, as it does create some confusion as to who owns the store, Victoria’s Secret or the Moseley’s. This confusion is what creates a dilution of the trademarked name Victoria’s
Macy was also the first to hire a woman executive in retail sales, promoting Margaret Getchell to store superintendent in 1866. Having grown up on Nantucket, where women ran family businesses and households, Macy believed that women were just as capable as men. Getchell was a distant relative of Macy’s, and she not only had a good head for business but helped Macy understand what his main customers (women) wanted. Four years after Getchell became store superintendent, Macy’s topped $1 million. In 1875, Rowland Macy took on two partners, Robert M. Valentine, a nephew; and Abiel T. La Forge of Wisconsin, who was the husband of a cousin (Macys).
A few years later in 1980, due to some financial troubles, Retail Ventures sold 50% of the company to the Schottenstein family who would then have full ownership of the company by 1991 (2016). After the purchase of the company in full by the Schottensteins, Retail Ventures launched three more chains of stores similar to the model of
Despite Victoria’s Secret’s revenue proportion inside Limited Brands going down, the percentage of the world lingerie revenue has slightly decreased, this brand still takes a large portion of the revenue. This is to say Victoria’s Secret is still in a dominant place in the lingerie world.
Ann Taylor was founded by Robert Liebeskind, son of a high-class dressmaker, and dates back to 1954. At the time Ann Taylor was a bestselling dress design that was gifted to Robert by his father for good luck. The design of this dress brought to life the “well-dressed woman” and the Ann Taylor legacy was born. Robert Liebeskind opened his first Ann Taylor store in New Haven, Connecticut where the first wave of new stores opened primarily in eastern college towns. Then in 1977, Liebeskind sold his stores to Garfinckle, Brooks Brothers, Miller Rhodes Corporation (http://nyjobsource.com/anntaylor.html, 2011). The Ann Taylor stores refrained from carrying a large variety of name brands, like most department stores, which gave them an
If you want the Victoria secret angels feel, then be careful of the lingerie you buy. A slight modification while buying your lingerie will change the way you look and
VTB also owns and operates Pajama Grams, a manufacturer of novelty pajamas and night garments, and Calyx Flower’s a premium florist that cuts the middle men to deliver the freshest flowers at the appropriate price.
Founded in 1954, Ann Taylor was designed as a “wardrobe source from busy socially upscale women” (Assenza, Eisner, & Kuperman, 2009, pg. 2-4). By 1994 the Ann Taylor Company ventured into the New York stock exchange launching into the “mail catalog business, fragrance line and free standing shoe stores positioned to supplement the Ann Taylor Store” (Assenza et al., 2009, pg. 2-4). By 1995 the company decided to end the mail order attempt and launch a new branch called the Ann Taylor LOFT that focused on lower priced apparel. The LOFT stores focused on a different market and were located in discount outlet malls and were eventually moved to the Ann Taylor Factory. This Ann Taylor Factory approached was a strategy offered “customers direct
Victoria Secret was founded in by Roy Raymond, and his wife Gaye, in San Francisco, California, on June 12, 1977. The company got its start when Roy Raymond was trying to shop for lingerie for his wife. He’d gone to a department store to make his purchase, only to find himself deeply uncomfortable and made even more so by saleswomen scrutinizing his presence there. “When I tried to buy lingerie for my wife,” Raymond told Newsweek in 1981, “I was faced with racks of terry-cloth robes and ugly floral-print nylon nightgowns, and I always had the feeling the department-store saleswomen thought I was an unwelcome intruder.” Raymond saw an opportunity in his discomfort and in 1977 borrowed $80,000 to open Victoria’s Secret as a store designed originally to make men comfortable when buying lingerie for their wives.

Roy Raymond in the area of San Francisco founded Victoria’s Secret during the 1970s. Roy Raymond had an idea of turning the classic underwear into luxurious and stylish fashion. Victoria’s Secret underwear differed from classical department stores’ underwear because of its color, material, pattern and style.
It is Lauren's innovativeness, among many other traits of the model businessman that has made him the founder, designer and chairman of a $900 million company. Not only was he the first fashion designer to have his own store, but he was the first to sell the whole lifestyle image that consumers flock to worldwide. His line of clothing and home collection has the taste and snobbism--minus the flashiness--that make the Ralph Lauren/Polo brand timeless. Lauren sells much more than clothes and home furnishings; he sells a lifestyle image of sophistication, class and taste. His keen business sense, ability to stand by his product at all costs and ability to prevail despite several business failures are what make him a man whose net worth is $1 billion.
In her interview with Motto, Victoria’s Secret Model Erin Heatherton admitted, “My last two Victoria 's Secret shows, I was told I had to lose weight. I remember staring at my food and thinking maybe I should just not eat.” Erin, like many, was pressured by Victoria’s Secret and societal standards to get a near perfect body image. Stores and their advertisements influence how humans behave, see themselves, and think of other people. Stores can affect consumers in negative and positive ways. Victoria’s Secret, known for its quality lingerie, has also branched off into perfumes, apparel, and lotions. Their audience encompasses mainly ranging from preteen to middle aged ladies. Many of their target audience members are easily influenced by Victoria’s Secret’s advertisement strategies and sales. Victoria’s Secret at the Empire Mall in Sioux Falls attracts customers with elaborate displays, and periodic sales and erases identity by creating a false sense of normalcy.
