At the moment, there are different trends that psychology is at and will progress to regarding demographics, technology, and innovation of ideas. An article by the Monitor of Psychology demonstrates through a survey of health providers the reality of the demographic they are reaching out to. It also addresses the different ways that practitioners are treating clients. According to the study, thirty-nine percent of respondents shared electronic medical records with other professionals. And while only 19 percent saw patients alongside other professionals, 36 percent participated in multidisciplinary team meetings and 33 percent reported integrated treatment plans (Clay 2016). This is showing an integration and community within the circle of therapists. …show more content…
The focus is towards a new area of psychology referred to as Humanitarian work psychology. Originally, this division dealt with work issues and things regarding the company but the new idea acknowledges “undeserved population,” which refers to those who are marginalized. Regarding this new form, the article states that humanitarian work psychologists are involved in implementing a concept known as "task shifting" in certain countries in Africa. The goal is to train lower-level health-care workers to perform specific jobs — such as HIV testing and home delivery of antiretroviral therapy — and subsequently increase access to health care in those countries. In Mozambique, for instance, surgical technicians and midwives are learning how to perform caesarian sections (Stringer 2016). The field is interested in diversifying itself with more communities that are outside the white, rich, and …show more content…
Being bilingual, Hispanic, Christian, and my general passion for psychology will propel me in my ambitions. I have much to offer but also have a lot to do before I can work in the field. Namely, I must assess my own opinions and challenge them as they will be challenged in the future by future colleagues, church members, and by the community I am around. This is necessary because of my own biases, dogmatism in certain areas, and because of the progress of man. The views of my faith, the people I am influenced by, and the reason I care must all be challenged. They may be warped and feeding something inside of me or they be good to some extent; at the moment, I am not currently aware of that. The progress of psychology is exciting nonetheless and will continue to be an area in which I will be developed by and
In the book Integrative Approaches to Psychology and Christianity by David Entwistle compares and contrasts the secular view of Psychology and the biblical view of Psychology. Entwistle delves into the question is psychology and Christianity mutually compatibility.
When my family and I decided to move to the United States, I began a process of adaptation to a new culture and language. However, this process of adaptation helped me develop a sensitivity to cultural differences and the values of individuals from different cultures. I arrived to this country in July 12, 2012, and I was excited to continue studying Psychology. However, I needed to be fluent in English and wait a year to become a Florida resident before I could begin studying. I considered this period of my life to be frustrating, as I wanted to learn about Psychology. I thought this represented an obstacle or a waste of time that was preventing me from continuing studying, however, I had to see it as an opportunity to really learn the language, and learn to be persistent if I wanted to achieve my goal of becoming a counselor.
The Transformational Psychology view, by Coe and Hall, believes how we live out our Christianity is more important than our understanding of how to think “Christianly.” Its an approach that states psychology is an act of doing love. It emphasizes learning, practicing, and living psychological science through the Spirit. The goal is not to relate aspects of science to faith, rather to transform science into an actual act of faith. The transformational view offers and values the idea of soul care for individuals. This view still respects the traditions and historical aspects of psychology. It emphasizes the importance of openness towards experience, observation, and simply humanness. This approach encourages individuals to explore all the wisdom and opportunity that is out there, and come back from those experiences a deeper Christian and closer to God. It suggests that the more open we are to different experiences, the more we grow, the more we help others, and the more we can serve God. This view really makes it a point that we are our own limitation. We are the ones holding humanity back from wandering through all the amazing things this world has to offer. The transformational view has Scriptural truths as the foundation and wants those who practice science to strive to live more like Christ. It does not take presuppositions, experience, observation as the foundation, only biblical truth. A few criticisms towards the transformational psychology view point out that this
The author supports the idea of employing an all-inclusive understanding of human nature. The author seems to be of the mindset that Christianity and the science of psychology can co-exist with one another. The author is focused on providing a Christian viewing platform to the integrative approaches of relating theology and psychology. He also gives examples of how the church at times throughout history has had a contentious view of psychology. This would lead one to come to the conclusion that it would be one or the other, and neither could be blended for the good of a
As a psychology major, it is important to know how to work with diverse populations, especially in today’s society. It seems that there are more cultural groups today, compared to the past because of groups such as LGBTQ and an increase in immigration to America from more countries than just Europe and Africa. In America, we expect people to know how to speak English and have a basic understanding of the American culture, but for the most part, Americans lack a willingness to understand other people’s cultures. While some do not want to take the time to understand different cultures, those individuals who work with diverse populations have to understand different cultures in order to truly help those from diverse situations. In order to learn
In 1978 the fırst multi-site mental health epidemiologic study in the U.S. reported that more than 50% of community respondents with depressive disorders were treated exclusively within the primary care system. As a result, primary care was labeled the “de facto mental health system” for Americans with the more prevalent but less severe mental health disorders. Subsequent re- search over the next decade found that only 25% to 50% of patients with depressive disorders were accurately diagnosed by primary care physicians. Moreover, among those accurately diagnosed only 50% received minimally adequate pharmacologic treatment, and less than 10% received a minimally adequate number of psychotherapy visits.

Psychology has been a passion of mine since I first took AP psychology in high school, and I knew then that psychology was the major for me. Beyond that, I had no idea what exactly I wanted to do in the field of psychology. The ideas of working in child psychology or clinical and even experimental have all run through my mind as I have tried to assess my potential career and life paths. This past semester, I received the opportunity to travel and study abroad in Ireland. There I immersed myself in Irish culture and I got to explore an entirely new path and new way of using what I have learned thus far in my academic career.
Telepsychology is a relatively new development within the field of mental health service. The American Psychological Association defines it as the “provision of psychological services using telecommunication technologies. . . Telecommunication technologies include but are not limited to telephone, mobile devices, interactive videoconferencing, email, chat, text, and Internet (e.g., self-help websites, blogs, and social media).”(2016). Within the general category of telepsychology, psychological services that are delivered via the internet are referred to as “e-therapy”, “itherapy”, “cybertherapy”, and other similar names. E-therapy is a natural extension of our technological advancement, the growth of psychology as a field, and our ever increasing
At this point in my life I am eager to continue my education in the hopes of mastering my purpose of helping others. I realize that by way of consequence of difference, the intersectionality of many factors of an individual’s life can lead to negative experiences and this is an aspect of society I hope to change. Also, my dream of opening my own psychology office would not be possible without furthering my education. This degree will allow me to counsel at risk youth and make a difference in their lives. I know that continuing my education through this program will prepare me for the professional practice I will encounter daily and help to lay the foundation of my future as a helpful member of society.
Since the 1990’s , increased immigration has influenced international forces and has helped redefine the unique practice of international social work from western helpers of professional imperialism, in which western knowledge was transferred from the richer nations (global north) to the poorer nations (global south). (Zu, 2006). Internationalization has changed social
My first meeting with a Wahehe Sex Worker in Urban Iringa was a short superficial interview on healthcare access that played only a minor part in our USAID-funded study. But the interviewee thanked me vehemently, not only for realizing her ceaseless struggle, but for taking on her issues as an African, and for working with my professor every day to achieve true health equity for all of the sex workers and MSM in the city of Iringa. I won’t lie, the experience was validating, but I do not want it to be one fond memory in the background of my life but rather my life’s central theme. Like me, the Global Health Corps is dedicated to the health equity of all people regardless of sexuality, race, or ethnicity, and it has proven that it has proven
The digital age has brought about many changes in the way we conduct business, education, entertainment and mental health. The trend to incorporate technology into our mental health programs, while in its infancy, continues to grow in popularity and use by both educational and private mental health providers. There has been a great deal of discussion on the methods, ethics, problems and benefits of this new technology, however little research has been done on the effectiveness of this method of counseling on clients.
This assignment will explore and compare psychology approaches, like the psychodynamic approach, the cognitive approach and the behaviour approach in human development, which stems from birth and how it interweaves with social work. Theorist's Piaget, Freud and Erickson focused-on interaction between biological maturing and experience with the social world and the physical world (Gross,2015). Psychology was recognised as a science in 1840. (Eysenck,2005,p.21) “Psychology is the science and mind, behavior and experiences”. Human development starts from when we are born into the world, the most basic question for a child when its born is it nature or nurture. This is a discussion to whether a human being is born with the inheritance of our identity or whether our identity is shaped by the atmosphere in which we are brought/raised up in. Many children and adolescents can show behavior problems or some sort of difficulties some point in their lives. One of the most frequent questions is the behavior normal for that child/person(Wilson,2018). It is very important for Social Workers and Social Work students to recognise how a person develops and how the various periods of human life form, this is after a birth of a child to adulthood. Social Workers will use a variety of skills and approaches which adapt to the service user. There are 5 main theorists on human development, Jean Piaget, Sigmund Freud, Erik Erickson, Lev Vygotsky and John Bowlby (Gross,2015).
