apparent that they come together to form a pyramid design. This aspect of Art Deco design, is discussed in Carolyn Mcdowall’s article, Art Deco: A Revolution of Design & Style for the Modern Age. In this article she states, “…verticals soaring upward as skyscrapers surmounted by stepped pyramidal shapes; horizontals that were all at once clean, cool filled with light and space.” (Mcdowall 1) In this graphic design, the verticle lines in the background, come together to form an upside pyramidal design. This is the first characteristic of Art Deco design, that can be found within this graphic design. The second Art Deco Characteristic, found within this graphic design, is the use of bold colors. The colors used for this piece are black and
Kelly Miller became the first African American student to graduate from John Hopkins University in 1887, where he studied mathematics and physics. An increase in tuition forced Miller to leave Johns Hopkins in 1889 without finishing his graduate work. He continued his studies as a student of Captain Edgar Frisby, an English mathematician at the US Naval Observatory, and shortly taught mathematics at M Street High School in Washington before being hired by Howard University as a professor of mathematics, where he taught for 5 years. Like other twentieth century black leaders, Miller believed that the developing social sciences would be useful in evaluating the experiences of black Americans and in charting a course for their future advancement. In conclusion to his duties as an educator and researcher, Miller served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Howard from 1907 to 1918. After spending over fifty years at Howard University as a student, teacher, and administrator, he retired from
Julie Becker was born in 1972, and passed away in 2016 at the age of 43[i]. Los Angeles was an integral part of her life as she grew up, created, and died in L.A; however she studied briefly at Hochschule der Kunste, Berlin in 1991 and completed a residency in Basel, Switzerland at Stiftlung Laurenz-Haus Foundation. Becker was the daughter of artists[ii], and subsequently grew up in constant travel from one apartment to the next while her parents worked odd jobs to survive. In lieu of finishing her senior year at Santa Monica High School, she became the youngest student ever to attend California Institute of the Arts in 1989 at the age of 16. From CalArts in Valencia, Becker received her BFA in 1993, and her MFA in 1995. Paul Schimmel, curator at the L.A Museum of Contemporary Art, selected Becker’s MFA thesis project, Researchers, Residents, A Place to Rest 1993-96, for the 23rd São Paulo Biennial, where she was the youngest participant.
Looking at each of the art angles we see that only the front view shows implied lines with the separation of colors between the texture’s slopes. This texture is created by an upside down “V” hump throughout the artwork, which can be seen in the Enhanced View in the appendix. Moving from Left-Side to Right-Side the other artworks are shown at only certain angles, we see here lines become complete rather than implied, becoming more abstract; this also shows that the element of motion is from the viewer is needed to see this artwork completely. From the front view the artwork shows implied shape, the left side, shows shape with objects with curved edges and lines, and the right-side shows objects with straight/sharp edges. We can also say that, overall, this piece of artwork has form due to the necessity for the artist to create these 3rd-Dimensional “V” humps to show the other artworks at their angles. This work of art also employed value as shown in all 3 angles, we can see that at

For my TV show I chose The Fresh Prince of Bell-Air. The Fresh Prince is a well-known TV show that aired in the 90’s and made Will Smith into one of the best black actors of our time. This show pushed itself into the public eye and sitting in 2016 right now, no one really says anything about it but this is one of the first major shows (other than The Cosby Show) to portray African American’s in a positive light. We get to know these characters throughout the seasons and everyone loves them. Everyone loves how smooth Will is with females, and how Carlton is such a nerd, and how Hillary is as greedy as the day is long, and we see Ashley grow up. We have all of this regular family programming but it also hits on real life subjects. Will is black
She lives and works in New Haven, CT. Her works have been exhibited in Europe and the USA, such as Dia Center for the Arts, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center in New York; at SITE Sante Fe in New Mexico; The Venice Biennale in Italy; Kunstmuseum St. Gallen in Switzerland; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and many others. She uses many materials for her single work, such as bales of hay, fruits, toys, laundry baskets, curtains, heat lamps, fan, yarn, newspaper, bowling balls, automobile, and construction materials: bricks, concrete, plywood, and sheetrock. Also, she added bright hues in the painted areas to the vibrantly colorful plastic products
Since I was a young girl, I have always been thoroughly influenced by the arts. I come from a musically inclined family. My brother is a saxophone player who can finesse any instrument he picks up. My mother is infamous for her loud singing in the car, making up words she doesn’t know. My sister is a classical singer who once attended NSU. She was in choir and studied under Terri Sanders. I’d say my love started from birth, really. I started singing at age 2 and never stopped.
The artwork during this time was influenced by Art Nouveau which included “curvilinear shapes, illegible hand-drawn type, and intense optical color vibration inspired by the pop art movement” (Psychedelic 60s). Pieces included abstracts swirls, intense colors, and bending
Who knows why some American bands get more action overseas than in the U.S.? Sometimes American audiences are fickle or picky. Luckily, our ‘mehs’ can be another country’s ‘yays’.
Muralist and mosaic artist Greta McLain has always liked big walls, so to her, it made sense that she would pursue an impactful medium of art, murals. In Minneapolis alone, she has created over 30 murals and also has murals in countries such Argentina, Mexico, and France.
Madeleine Vionnet is probably one of the most diverse designers in the twentieth century. In spite of the fact that she was born in a period when dress codes were largely imposed by the social order, she had the courage to be different and designed a series of clothes that would impress the masses through their ingenuity. While the designer community was reluctant to accept her as a genuine designer, she did not express interest in joining their ranks and was particularly concerned about the quality and the innovation present in her works. She was able to see effectiveness in places that people did not consider particularly important and eventually managed to enter history as a result of her dedication.
From my observation, I can tell that Cindy Sherman works consists of self-portraits that offer critiques of gender and identity. Sherman's work interest me because she inserts herself into her art and expresses her own portrayals of female stereotypes found in films, television, and advertising. In Sherman's seminal series titled Untitled Film Stills I noticed that she examines and distorts femininity as a social construct, and she often uses a large color scale in her photographs. Sherman’s work puts me in the mind of the circus, because many of her photographs consist of clowns, costume dress up, and disfigured mannequins. I find her work to be far from mediocre, because her pieces stand out and demand to be seen whether the photographers
The Mona Lisa has been one of the most debated paintings of all time. The look on the face of the women in this painting leaves a person’s mind wondering. No one really seems to know what this mysterious woman is thinking or feeling. The questions that cannot seem to be answered are what make this painting so famous. The reason for that is because it is raveled in mystery and secrets. All of the small details make the painting stand out by being different from others and the details also make it far more remarkable as well. And surely, the smirk on the face of the Mona Lisa is the major key factor to the painting being so interesting. “Leonardo da Vinci was one of the

Barr submitted the concept of what was to become of the museum. It had to be organized as a multi-departmental structure each devoted for Architecture and Design, Photography, Film and Video, and they should stand side by side with traditional arts such as Painting and Sculpture. Architect Philip Johnson built on this idea. The multi-departmental structure seemed to best fit with the burgeoning International Style, a modernist architectural movement from which Philip Johnson belonged. In this architecture, buildings are designed with simple geometric lines and clean, precise surfaces and with minimum decoration. Walls are made almost entirely of glass, known as curtain walls—a signature Johnson was known for—that are used to give the building a light and airy appearance.
