What is art? Art is a difficult word to describe, because it means something a tad bit different to everyone you encounter. The official definition of art according to the Oxford Dictionary is “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” The only problem with this definition is that it is very open ended, creativity and imagination are vastly different in everyone’s mind. For the Egyptians they would have interpreted this definition in a more literal way saying art was when something was hand-made with the purpose of being used. The first ever ceramic pieces were made and used out of necessity; they would use the clay from the Nile River to make containers to hold and store items, make bricks, and tableware. Eventually they would move closer to our definition in the sense that they started using it for personal reasons like statues, funerary offerings, jewelry, toys and games. “The oldest pottery technique consisted in hollowing out a lump of clay by hand and pinching it to give it the final form. Later a flat tool was used to press the clay against the other hand. This simple procedure brought forth the elegant and astonishingly thin-walled vessels of the Naqada II period (2nd half of the 4th millennium BCE).” This technique is very simple, but it is effective and lead to all the new techniques we use
The definition of art is notoriously difficult and is a field of philosophical inquiry as such. The meaning of the word "art" are multiple, sediment and cross each other in the language. Missing uses of the word are present in expressions and help to make the subject more that difficult. However, according to my studies, art is an expression, a symbolic way to communicate. Its key is to make something subject or scientific, for instance: an object that went through certain modification would be consider an art. We have a different type of arts but I will only be focusing on this tree types: prehistoric art, art of the ancient near east and art of ancient Egypt.
Let’s explore these forms of Neolithic ceramics and how they defined the art of the time period.
Explain the aesthetic definition of art. Is it plausible? Explain why, or why not, with specific reference to literature.
I like the primary colors on the repeating circles which look like monkey bars. The two buckets at the top of the poles must bring hours of fun and excitement for the children as they fill up with water and spill over on a hot summer day. This is a nice area to encourage children and families to go outside and play. I feel there is too much television and video games these days and not enough outside adventure. This neighborhood art is an outdoor invitation for fun of all ages! There are lakes and activity areas in my neighborhood too and I am admiring their beauty different now that I am in Art Appreciation.
The search for a definition of Art has been subject of a complex philosophical reflection incorporated; however, within different thematics because the very idea of Art is changeable as it relies on the culture and the tradition of a particular epoch.
Defining art is a frustrating and thought provoking idea, because to define art is the equivalent to putting up a wall and saying you cannot pass it, but as human nature works, someone will eventually attempt and succeed at crossing over the wall. I personally enjoy the thought of artists constantly breaking the barrier of things considered to be art, but I also enjoy the thought of people preparing definitions to share with the world, because it causes this ongoing controversy. I believe the most satisfactory definition we have studied thus far is that of Jerrold Levinson. Levinson’s definition discards the thought of a strict “artworld,” which is why it works well with an example like the west side of the Berlin wall. Levinson contends
The definition of art is completely subjective meaning in layman’s terms that is in the eyes of the beholder. I have received an Associates of Arts degree so I am somewhat familiar with the different types of art that are associated with painting such as cubism, realism, pop art, and even fauvism. There are also other things that are considered as art such as music, dance, and poetry.
Art is a way for not only everyday people but also artists to show their feelings and their passions. People can be affected in many, and different ways, through art. Even though art can be interpreted in different ways it can still have valuable meanings to almost everyone in their own special ways. Throughout time art has followed the people closely. It has fed on, and even publicized the state in which society was in. This is not saying that art can’t differ from the theme of society, but more times than not it usually relates to society in at least some small way. Society and Art can differ over the era in time. Art helps people to build their ideas and reshape their imaginations. Art can contribute to pass on the way thing were over different time periods.
There are many different art styles around the world that developed in various ways. Ancient Egyptian art is around 5 thousand years old, and it is a major contributor to late Mesolithic Art. It arose and took place in the Nile Valley. Ancient Egyptian art attained a high level in sculpture and painting, and was extremely stylized and symbolic. Most of the Egyptian sculptures that have been well-preserved were initially made for temples and/or tombs. All Egyptian art and sculpture was based on the belief of life after death. The pharaoh’s body was cautiously preserved, and certain items were buried with him in the Pyramids of Giza to continually provide for his needs. Life-size and large statues, carved in limestone, slate, and alabaster,
Art is not just a picture on a wall or in a museum, art comes in many forms. It can be a song you just heard, a video you watched, or a painting you saw in a gallery. Art can also be just text but no matter what all forms of art grasp you in different ways and make your thoughts evolve to new distances. Art can bring you feelings you did not think you had. This is what an art world truly is, a combination of all the work that was put into the art and how it impacted people’s lives. “Art worlds consist of all the people whose activities are necessary to the production of the characteristic works which that world, and perhaps others as well, define as art” (Becker, p. 34). Becker also says an art world is the network of people whose cooperative activity, organized via their joint knowledge of conventional means of doing things, produce the kind of art works that art world is noted for. An art world is very similar to an industry but the art business is so small that the social factor isn’t strong enough to consider it an industry. The people who create the artwork will see the same people interested in the same artwork at the same art shows, galleries, and other events year after year. In order to have an art world and artwork in it, we need the artists to create art and an audience to critic and appreciate the art. Without an audience there would be no variation in the types of art as the audience has a huge influence in what artists make. For instance, without the reaction
Management is a universal human activity where individuals take responsibility for an action and intentionally shape its outcome (Boddy, 2014).
Visual Arts? Visual? Arts? art that is visual, isn't all art visual? what does that even mean? This is what my year 4 self was thinking when I asked my Year 7 sister what classes she was going to drop and why, she said she would drop visual arts due to heavy work load. I remember I wanted to follow in her footsteps so I swore to myself that as soon as I could drop the subject I would as well. Flash forward a few years and here I am.
Art, one of the most important ways for individuals to express their thoughts and feelings about things. Painting is one of the many artistic forms used to communicate the aforementioned. Paintings are often displayed at museums or art galleries in order to allow people to admire them and analyze their meaning. A painting that is displayed at the Albright-Knox art gallery in Buffalo, New York is La Vie Paysanne. French-Russian artist, Marc Chagall, painted La Vie Paysanne in the year 1925.
What do you love to do? Maybe you love art, maybe you love acting, or maybe you love sports. Now, imagine, whatever it is you love to do, you are the best at that. So, if you love sports, you are the greatest athlete of all time. Yet, even though you are the greatest at what you do, imagine nobody appreciates you. Imagine yourself as a sports star, and you are the strongest, fastest, quickest athlete in history but no one knows your name. Instead, they focus on someone else who takes performances inhancers to help himself compete and even after the performance inhancers, he is still not as good as you. Still, everybody loves him and thinks he is amazing, while everybody does not even know who you are. How would you feel? Maybe you would feel unappreciated. You might feel underrated and you may feel like you have been done wrong. Well, what if I told you, there is a form of art where we do not show glory to the the best, instead we give it to others who some would say are undeserving.
Drawing is not an activity, but a piece of me that I could never let go of. Drawing has transformed itself from a fun hobby into an essential form of expression. It has transformed the way I look at things; nothing is mundane in art. A tree, for example, is a beautiful thing. Every single tree is unique, with its own bark texture, its own arrangement of branches, and its own color. The limit only gets pushed further when the tree inherits the personality of its artistic creator. Whenever I feel emotionally connected to something, I generally have an impulse to draw it, which strengthens the connection. Both the result and the process are rewarding; it is always possible to improve, challenge, and discuss with other artists. There aren’t always “right” ways to draw things, which allows illustration to evolve throughout time.
