As an artist, I am indeed a visual and kinesthetic learner, which mean I learn more efficiently through intrapersonal, visual spatial and bodily-kinesthetic spatial intelligence. I understand and pick up information well by listening to lectures, tutorials and demonstrations and even better with images, graphs, diagram, authentic materials and things that I can feel with my hands. Even though I am not a fan of public speaking, but also found myself comfortable with presentations that involve talking about my ideas and opinions. I also found myself not much of reading and writing learner (even though they are helpful) and using logical mathematical intelligent seems to slow me down and considered as one of my learning weaknesses. However, I also aware that those weaknesses can be improved through learning from peers during group activities. …show more content…
I understand that to improve the effectiveness in the classroom; there should be a variety of teaching styles to approach each student’s unique learning style. Starting with being well prepared by assessing pros and cons of each learning style to see how it fit with the situations and the criteria for the tasks. For example, with learning new vocabularies, for younger students at language level between beginner and lower intermediate, realia, role plays, images will be helpful with students who do not know enough vocabs to express themselves or still shy to speak up when they have questions. In those cases, they can fill themselves with guesses base or
Developing this teaching style does require time and the incorporation of different teaching strategies as well as being able to assess what is effective in my teaching, ensuring that the learners are
Once a visual learner sees and understands what is being expected of them to understand, they sometimes will have to write or draw it. If they are writing or taking
To address all these different learning styles I use a range of teaching methods. At the start of a training session I use an ice-breaker to let the students introduce themselves and it also gives me a chance to guage the depth of their knowledge. I then give my aim of the session and explain my objectives.
Understanding learning styles can help in the development of self-learning and influence the teaching strategies that may be used in helping others understand new matter. For example, when teaching the VARK learning style having the learner complete the VARK questionnaire so that they can develop an understanding of how they learn would be great. In the real world life application, it completing a learning styles assessment is just not practical. It is the responsibility of the teacher to develop multimodal ways to deliver information. It would include something like a lecture with a handout in a possible power point format that include diagrams of how the information may be applied and complete it with a discussion to cement the information. The lecture appeals to the aural learner. The power point aids the reader along with the visual learners. How to apply the information stimulates the kinesthetic learner and the completion with an open discussion cements the information and gives the aural learner a chance to
“Just as students have different personalities, they also have different ways of learing (Slavin, 107).” Learning styles are another important factor to incorporate when implementing the best learning environment. Learning styles are defined as an individual's mode of gaining knowledge. The most common learning styles addressed are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. Auditory leaners understand information through hearing. Visual learners need more visual aids in the learning process, such as diagrams, webs, or pictures. Kinesthetic learners learn better by using manipulatives or by being physically involved in the learning process. Learning styles is a piece of the “backbone” of differentiated learning. Both are used to individualize instruction to help students achieve the most success.
Learning is so very important in every aspect of life. In this week's lesson, we found out that there are many ways of learning. In one of the tests, after answering the questions honestly, I learned I was a kinesthetic learner (Bethel University, 2013). Being a kinesthetic learner works extremely well in my career where all matters are hands on and one has to actively participate in learning new skills within a state penitentiary. My supervisor at work would be happy knowing I am a kinesthetic learner since he always questions why I excel in my job performance each and every year.
You can find out what learner style each learner is by conducting a simple test in the form of a handout, count the ticks in each column and it will give a rough idea of the best way they learn. You will need to make sure each lesson is delivered to facilitate each of the learner styles so each learner is catered for, so progressive leaning takes place which is being professional incorporating equality and diversity. Different resources what are available can be used to deliver the lesson to engage learners and make their learning experience one that they remember and learn from.
In order to effectively teach students with different learning styles, I will most likely be using this website for ideas. Education.com has everything. They tell you how to know what styles your children are better with and give you some activities that you can use to reach all of those students. On their site, you can find specific activities for any grade, or subject, up through high school. For example, I will be teaching third grade so I would go and look under third grade and then go under whatever subject I need, such as math. Once there, I just scroll through and pick an activity that allows student to interact with each other while practicing the subject and having fun. I can also use
Different people understand and process information in different ways. While people may or may not learn exactly the same way, people tend to be grouped under three learning styles: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. Auditory learners process things through hearing. These people learn best by listening to lectures and reading out loud. Visual learners, on the other hand, comprehend and understand information using their eyes. They learn via reading textbooks and watching videos. Lastly, kinesthetic learners take in information by doing things. These people tend to pace while studying and have to move around a lot.
In school everyone learns differently; however, according to the article The Myth of Learning Styles, “The idea of learning styles is based on a theory… developed in the early 1980’s.” (pg 1.) A lot has certainly changed from the 1980’s as we learn new more material in every class we take. With this being said, someone the scientists referred to in the article “assumed” that learning styles challenged the way of the educational system when in reality, it is simply a myth. Students, like myself, only prefer to process information that they find useful or interesting to him or her. Thus giving us the problems of that teachers may take too long to cover one idea, and students may miss out out on information because he or she did not prefer that learning style.
265). Incorporating how students would like to receive instruction matched to their learning styles and strengths will increase student motivation to succeed. It is important for me as the teacher to know what instructional strategies work with each student. When students are presented with information in a manner they feel comfortable with they will be less likely to misbehave during class time.
I’m a visual learner. I need to view what I need to do before I do it. I want an example of what I’m supposed to be in charge of before I do it. I want to physically see what to make before I even try it. Viewing a person make something that I’m trying to make helps me. I also learn by doing physical things. I enjoy to talk with my hand gestures and I also am active. I enjoy doing physical activities that help my concentration. I also do have difficulty sitting still. Moving around helps. Taking breaks also helps my concentration. If I take a break, it gives my brain time to refresh and stress less. Alaina’s not totally creative I usually use something that I have done or that another person has done. I’m also not a great drawer and I don’t enjoy drawing. It’s not a hobby and it’s not too great to me.I enjoy to go outdoors and play sports and that helps Alaina learn. I play outside with friends whenever I can, I play soccer, basketball, gymnastics or any sort of sports as much as I possibly can. I need to move around which is probably not that good for the teachers, but it helps my learning so I try to move whenever I can.
For years, there have been many theorists who have shared their views on how individuals learn. Such research has determined that individuals have different learning styles. It is important for teacher to understand the learning styles of both themselves and their students because it helps them to relay the subject knowledge to the students. The teacher is in a position where they must be able to assess the learning styles of their students. This means that the students and teachers are both in a process of learning.
I know that I am a Visual Learner, and everything I learn is through what I see. I learned that I am able to learn through different teaching styles and still learn the necessary information that is being given. Most people can relate to being a visual learner as it helps to see the information and retain it as well. Another type of common learning style is bodily kinesthetic which I feel I also learn well from as well.
Being aware of learning style is beneficial for individuals in both teaching and learning roles. By knowing personal strengths and preferences, the learner is able to devise ways to augment and tailor the way in which information is received and processed regardless of the way it is presented. With that being said, those that are in teaching positions must make the realization that not everyone learns in the same manner. Being aware of this will lead the teacher to discover new ways to present information in a way that will address the needs of all members of the class. If all parties involved are knowledgeable of prominent styles within a group; the teaching learning environment can be much more effective.
