There are a lot of events leading up to Bob’s death, including almost drowning Ponyboy, going to the drive-in, and Johnny killing Bob, just to name a few. To start in chronological order, some of the boys go to see a drive-in movie, and they meet some sweet and attractive Soc girls. After the movie is over they decide to walk them back to Steve’s place so they can drive them home, because their house is far away from them. The next important event that happens is that Socs see the boys walking their girlfriends home, get mad at them, and demand the girls get in their blue mustang so they may take them home. The next day rolls around, and Bob and his crew roll up in their blue mustang and start to attack Johnny and Ponyboy. Ponyboy and Johnny
The murder of Bob Shelton occurred because earlier that night Johnny Cade and his friends had been flirting with Bob’s and the Socs’ girlfriends. Bob and four of his friends confronted Johnny Cade and Ponyboy Curtis early the next morning around 2:00 am at a park fountain. David, one of the Socs, began to drown Ponyboy Curtis in the fountain. Johnny Cade lost all sanity and knifed Bob Shelton, who was doing no harm to Cade or Curtis, in order to stop David from drowning Ponyboy Curtis. Johnny is not justified in what he did and is guilty because he carried a switchblade with intent to kill whoever jumped him, killed a person who was not attacking his friend, and lastly, fled the scene of the crime with his friend.
Johnny had to kill Bob to save Ponyboy because there was no other way around. He couldn’t have stopped them because they were drunk and looking for a fight. (pg 44 and 55) He couldn’t have fought them without a weapon because it would have been a one on five.(pg 55) He had to stab Bob to make them stop because they wouldn’t have run away. They would have drowned Ponyboy.(pg 56 and 57) To save himself and his friend, the defendant had to stab Bob. It made them scared and run away because they had the sole thought of harming both of them so Johnny had to act fast before he was going to be killed along with Ponyboy.
Finally, Johnny is not justified in what he did and is guilty because Johnny killed Bob, who didn’t cause any physical harm in the fight. Johnny stated that “‘I killed that boy.’ Bob, the handsome Soc, was lying there in the moonlight, doubled up and still” (56). This states that Johnny killed Bob instead of David, who was the one harming Ponyboy. This means that Johnny must have wanted to harm Bob for what he has done in the past.
After running for a while they stopped in another parking lot with a fountain in the middle. While in the parking lot a blue mustang that belonged to the Socs that beat up Johnny a long time ago pulled up. They stepped out and started to insult Johnny and Ponyboy, Ponyboy snapped back and they grabbed him and shoved his head in the found as stated, “They grabbed my arm and twisted it behind my back, and shoved my face into the fountain. I fought, but the hand at the back of my neck was strong and I had to hold my breath. I’m dying, I thought, and wondered what was happening to Johnny.” This showed that those Socs were even going to kill them just because they talked back, but they were also drunk which also shows how dangerous drunk Socs are. To save Ponyboy Johnny had to kill the Soc and afterwards they both had to run out of town to avoid being arrested. This changed Ponyboys identity into a outlaw.
In the book, The Outsiders, Ponyboy Curtis is part of the Greaser’s, a gang of boys who are in the lower class in 1965. Their arch rival, the Socs, are the more privileged, upper class boys from across town. Throughout the book, the two gang have many conflicts. Darry, Ponyboy’s oldest brother acts as a parent figure for him since both of his parents were killed in a car crash. Other member of the Greasers are Dally, Two-Bit, Steve, Sodapop, and Johnny. After getting in a fight with his brother, Ponyboy flees to the park where he runs into a group of Socs. The Socs attack Ponyboy and hold his head under the water in the fountain, trying to kill him. Ponyboy blacks out, and later wakes up to see on the Soc boys dead body next to him. Johnny then tells Ponyboy that he killed the boys because they were trying to kill Ponyboy. The boys are afraid, and desperately try to find Dally Winston, who gives them a gun and sends them to the abandoned church to hide. The two boys stay at the church for a while until they decide to go back into town. As they are leaving
The subsequent conflict is man vs man when Johnny kills Bob in self-defense. Johnny is with ponyboy at the park then a blue mustang is driving around the park, Johnny and Ponyboy don’t feel safe therefore they try to flee. Five Socs are walking towards them, they feel threaded so Johnny takes out a blade, but ponyboy does not have a weapon. They see Randy, Bob, and three other Socs, Bob said “Here’s the little greasers that picked up our girls. Hey, Greaser”. Bob also said that the greasers are “white trash with long hair”. They have comebacks back and forth until ponyboy tried to attack them “I ducked and tried to run for it, but the Soc caught my arm and twisted it behind my back, and shoved my face into the fountain. I fought,
First of all, Johnny was justified in killing Bob. It was in self-defense, the Socs beat up Johnny before traumatizing him, and the only reason why Johnny had his switchblade was because of the same Socs who tried to kill Ponyboy. “The Socs caught my arm and twisted it behind my back, and shoved my face into the
Then Ponyboy runs out the door, finds Johnny, and goes to the park. There, however, the two young greasers run into randy and bob, with a huge group of their Socs friends. One of the Socs friends hold pony boy’s head under a cold water fountain, and Ponyboy blacks out. When he comes to, he is lying on the ground next to Johnny. The bloody corps of bob is next to them. To save Ponyboy, Johnny had to kill bob.
In this book, everyone was part of a gang and everyone looked at each other as either a Soc ,or a Greaser. Johnny, who has been abusively beaten while getting jumped and from his own father at home, and Pony save children from a burning house. No one would expect the hoodlums to risk their lives to save children. They have a reputation for doing illegal things and getting arrested. However, newspapers have stories on the two and labelled them as “heroes”. Dally, who was the toughest and baddest of all the Greasers, kills himself. The true reason behind this was because after going to the hospital to visit Johnny, he witnessed watching him die right in front of his eyes. Johnny’s death makes him rob a store and having the police intentionally kill him. The only thing that he loved was Johnny and his beloved thing was gone. This shows that Dally, even though he’s a Greaser and does all these horrible things, has feelings. Even people who genuinely knew him, labelled him as having no feelings. Also, Randy, who is a soc, talks to Pony about Bob and how he was just a regular guy who had his own problems. The only reason that Bob would act out and drink a lot was because his parents would never set boundaries. He just wanted for someone to tell him “No”. Cherry Valance, who was Bob’s girlfriend, even said that he was actually sweet. This shows that people are individuals and that labels don’t say who you
The park is empty at 2:30 in the morning. Ponyboy and Johnny go walking to the fountain and its cold out while Ponyboy is wearing only a short-sleeved shirt. Suddenly the boys see the blue Mustang from earlier that night. Five Socials, including Randy and Bob, jump out of the car and come near them. The Socials came to get even with the boys for picking up their girlfriends. Ponyboy can tell that are very drunk. Bob tells Ponyboy that greasers are white trash with long hair, and Ponyboy replies that Socials are nothing but white trash with Mustangs and madras shirts. In a violent matter, Ponyboy spits at the Socials. Then a Social grabs Ponyboy and holds his head under the cold water of the fountain. Ponyboy feels himself drowning and knocks
The Greasers and the Socs' Are two rival gangs who try to claim there place in a small town. Throughout the book and movie an interesting twist occurs, Ponyboy runs away and meets with Johnny Cade, they walk throughout a vacant lot and didn't expect to see the Socs' and their blue Mustang . This is when the interesting twist occurs one of the greasers called Bob had tried to drown Ponyboy and Johnny having no choice, killed him with a switch blade. A flashback is a strong memory of a past event that comes into a person’s mind. The author states that “It was almost four months ago . . . At the corner of our block there’s a wide open field where we play football and hangout . . . we were passing it . . . when Steve noticed something lying on the ground . . . I think we all heard the low moan and saw the dark, motionless hump on the other side of the lot … They had scared him that much. He would kill the next person who jumped him (Hinton 34). This passage helps the reader understand background information related to the plot, because, if the Socs never did that to Johnny, Bob could still be alive and Ponyboy could be dead, since Johnny wouldn’t be traumatized to kill someone, if he gets
Bob is to blame because he was drowning Ponyboy. Ponyboy would have died. Bob almost killed Ponyboy and that is why he is to blame for his death. Bob was being cruel. Just because Johnny did it, doesn't mean it was entirely his fault. Bob is to blame because he was drowning Ponyboy. Bob was beating them up just for sitting next to Bob's girlfriend, Cherry Valance. Dally was bothering Cherry, so Marcia and Cherry asked Ponyboy and Johnny to protect them from Dally. He was also
To begin, Johnny is innocent for the murder of Bob concidering that Bob was killing Johnny’s third party Ponyboy, leaving Johnny to use self defence. “ ‘I had
Bob is Cherry’s boyfriend he is a hard drinking leader of one of the soc’s gangs terrorizing the Greasers. Many of the Greasers believe he was the Soc who kept his rings on when they jumped Johnny and seriously assulted him. This allows us to believe he is a serious bully and capable of inflicting violence. Bob is also the main leader who orders the socs to drown Pony boy in the fountain incident. Bob was then approached by Johnny who was protecting Pony boy and was stabbed with a switch blade and died. He is also involved in many cases of violence in the book. For example the first jumping. When Pony boy was jumped walking home from the cinemas and his face was badly cut up. Bob was involved in this incident and was the main reason why Pony boy was cut up so bad. However many of Bob’s friends believe he is so out of control because he doesn’t have enough discipline or boundaries at home. This leads us to believe Bobs parents don’t really care about him and have no serious relationship with bob making him a victim of emotional violence because he feels neglected. This could be a reason as to why he is such a big victim who is capable of inflicting violence because he doesn’t really know who he is or what the right thing is to do. Making him angry and taking it out on the Greasers in a violent
