In the story “The old Chief Mshlanga” by Doris Lessing has a few symbols. The Chief represents a symbolic sign for respect. From the first time Nkosikaas meet the Chief she knew that he was somebody important. The young girl knew because “the pride that made the old man stand before me like and equal”. With little to no words the Chief showed her that you should treat people the way you want them to treat you. The rifle and the dog symbolize the growth of the girl. In the eyes of Nkosikaas, Chief Mshlanga represented dignity and pride. When Nkosikaas goes to Chief Mshlanga’s village to search for him, she is met with heavy tension, as she states, “When he saw me, not a muscle of his face moved, and I could see he was not pleased: perhaps he was afflicted with my own shyness, due to being unable to find the right forms of courtesy for the occasion” (Lessing 70-72). At this moment, Nkosikaas realized it was a wrong decision to visit the Chief, as she felt the gaping stares from
