To me the American dream is being able to do what you want and achieving your end goal in life. Although this means something different for everyone but, to historians, it means that the government protects the rights of people to to do what makes them happy. In this paper I will discuss what the American dream is and if it is even still possible to achieve. Another thing about the American dream; it could mean the same thing in modern society as it did a long time ago because it is still a person's ability to do what they want and what makes them happy. The American Dream means something different to everyone. The true definition of the American dream is, “The ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative.” People have gone through and have suffered more than others. The term “American Dream” is defined as an idea which believes that all people have the possibility of prosperity and success. The idea first came from James Adams, a noted American writer and historian. He claimed, “Life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability and achievement.” Therefore, the core concepts of the American Dream were closely linked to hard work and opportunity.

What is “The American Dream”? “The American Dream” is this idea of a place of neverending possibility. A place where anybody can be what he wants to be no matter what he was in his home country. “The American Dream” is the ideals of freedom and the chance to prosper and succeed. With hard work any man can break through social barriers. When you try you have the opportunity to become anything. The poorest man can become the richest man. There are no boundaries that someone is placed in because of the family they were born into. In countries around the world, what you are when you are born is what you will be your entire life. The rich stay rich, and the poor stay poor without any hope of being somebody of importance.

John Steinbeck wrote an article named “America & Americans; is the dream even possible” he explains that Americans are a “restless, a dissatisfied, a searching people”(1, STEINBECK ). We Americans are always going we never just hold back and take a look at everything in front of them. We are never happy with just one thing, we always have to have more. Ever since the Great Depression, the United States has never really come back from money issues and there is no one American that can say that they never had money issues because they have.

In 1910, my ancestors moved to the Chambers County area to realize their version of the “American Dream”. My Great-great Grandfather Winzer immediately began working in the oilfields of Beaumont and my Great-great Grandmother Winzer opened a Bed and Breakfast for those passing through this area. However, my Great-great Grandfather passed away and left his family to discover a means to survive. My Great Grandfather, W.J. Winzer, became the “man of the house” and had to support his five brothers/sisters and his mother. Therefore, to accomplish this goal, he would invest his resources in a tract of land and begin farming rice. My Grandfather, Mike Winzer, would continue this tradition through both farming and ranching. All my life, the spirit of the land and my ancestors have flowed through my blood.

The American dream is one of the ideas that guide the culture and society of the United States at the national level. More specifically, the American dream usually refers to the ideals that guarantee the opportunity to thrive and succeed and to meet up social mobility.

The first piece of evidence that supports my argument is that Americans are too focused on earning money instead of enjoying how they live and how much better their life is. The “American Dream” has been something pervasive throughout the growth of American from its foundation to its current time. People have long made their dream to come to America and make a better life for themselves, their children, or whoever they truly, deeply cared about. For many, this was the dream of a home, a good job, a nice community, and a loving family. For others it was the dream of something better for your children than what you had growing up.
