What Does It Means To Be An Immigrant

America/Americans... what does this mean? Being American can mean many things, where you are from or what race or religion you are as well. These are just a few basic things that can make you feel like an American. But, there are many people who claim they are "Americans" being treated other wise. Examples of this treatment are, "Mericans" from Sandra Cisneros and "Response to Executive Order 9066" by Dwight Okita. In both of these texts, they infer from their point of view, the hardships they faced based on their ethnicity and not being considered an American.

What really is an American? Being an American is not just being born in the USA as most people would think, that is just the technicality of it. For centuries Americans have defined themselves not by their racial, religious, and ethnic identity but by their common values and belief in individual freedom. Not just being able to say “The Pledge of Allegiance” and being able to vote for the president, but being able to be free and to be proud that you live in the United States of America.

What means to be an American? About everywhere in the societies and the people in it have diverse opinions to be an American especially when they are from different country. Being an American means to have a willing to accept others from different culture, freedom to do anything, and to have opportunities in terms of relaxed atmosphere.

What does it mean to be an American? In my eyes to be an American means to have privileges, rights, and freedom. America isn't perfect, but it is one of the only countries that have rights given to people of different diversities and gender. America does not have tremendous poverty. Instead we have choices given to us by the people who fought and died for the American people. Without George Washington and the other patriots who planted the first seed in the ground and help plant the American nation we live in now who knows what America would be like now.

An American is someone who doesn't rely on others for their individual happiness. Someone with the freedom to independently make decisions towards becoming a better person without conforming to society's standards/sentiments. Americans have equal rights no matter where they come from. “Of every hue and caste I am, of every rank and religion... I resist anything better than my own diversity,” (Whitman) Walt Whitman is saying that no matter the color of your skin, your rank/wealth in society, or your religion, you are just as equal as everybody else. What does it mean to be an American? Being an American means a multitude of different things. It depends on who the person is and what is the most important to them. It may be that they are free, or that they are proud, or simply because they appreciate the country’s history. This country has so many privileges that other countries do not have, and this sets it aside from them.

Being a descendant of a veteran makes me proud of my family and its history and hardwork and dedication. Makes me proud of my country and where I come from. Helps me have a better appreciation for those who fight for our country. Makes me thankful that they give up so much like being with their family, sleep and being able to come home and take days off of work, so that I can sleep at night peacefully in my bed without having to worry about what is going on outside my house. It means putting trust in my country and everything that it stands for. It means saying that Pledge Allegiance with meaning and understanding on the words that I am saying. To be an American can mean a lot of things to others, but one thing everyone has in common on what they think it means is to be free. It means you can vote for who and what you want. It means you can say “The Pledge of Allegiance.” It means you can have a good education and the job you want. It means to be proud in living in the United States of America. Being an American is having freedom and being able to do things with that freedom. It’s about having freedom of religion, rights, and justice. It also means having equality. To be an American means you have the right and freedom to do what you want. It means having the freedom of speech. It means you can be yourself. To be an American mainly means having freedom.

What does an American mean to you? I think this is a good question what does being an American mean, I think it has something to do with your right and freedom. The reason for this is because we have things that other people in different countries have. I think sometimes we even take advantage of the thing that we have. America is one of the more fortunate countries.

I believe that what it means to be an American is to struggle,not be accepted for you are,and to feel and be treated as someone less then other people. I believe an american is defined by his love for his country and his contribution to keeping america the "melting pot". America was founded by immigrants seeking refuge from hardship and political and religious persecution. America is a land of immigrants and freedom seeker. I myself am Japanese and French But Because I was born in the United States Im considered a US citizen.

The academic definition of immigration is “when individuals become permanent residents or citizens of a new country .” The academic definition of slavery is “when one human being was owned by another human being .” The difference between both is that immigrants come of their own free will and slaves come because they were forced. Immigrants migrated for their own reasons including economic opportunities, religious freedom, and independence and immigrants were treated differently by different groups of people in early American history.
