What Does It Mean To Judge A Book By It's Cover?

A Scottish Proverb once said, “Do not judge by appearances; a rich heart may be under a poor coat.” This quote applies to the theme of the novel,“The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle” by Avi. The theme is don’t judge a book by its cover and in the quote, it says to not judge someone by appearances because they might be different than what you think. We all have been young, with our parents telling us not to judge a book by its cover. However, we still do. Stereotyping has started to become a huge problem, not just in my hometown but all across the nation. This is happening every day, from someone’s personality to a person’s skin color. Society has put people in groups, and associating certain things, with each type of person. In the story “Brownies,” by, ZZ Packer they judge Troop 909 once they got off the bus off of looks, without thinking about personalities or issues that they might have which brought out the theme of not judging a book by its cover.

Many times in society, people tend to create different stereotypes or view people as “different” or “unusual”. People are constantly judging before considering facts and other valuable information. Sadly, most victims that are being judged are wrongly convicted. The idea of judging and characterizing a person by how he/she looks, seems to be typical and common. Very few people in today’s day and age take the time to discover the true qualities of a person who may be convicted and is either behind bars or being judged for things they have never done. In the book Freak the Mighty the theme is that you shouldn’t judge a person based on their appearance. Basically don’t judge a book by it’s cover meaning you don’t look at someone based on their looks, you have to get to know them better. Many people like us kids in middle school go around judging people, homeless people, kids at school that don’t hang out with anyone, or innocent kids that get judged if they have a family member in jail. Don’t ever judge a book by it’s cover because you don’t get anywhere making up what you think the person is like just based on their looks.

People judge one another by their physical attributes rather than the character of their personality. We build judgements and assumptions of people just by the way they look. That's just the sad reality of the world we live in. People now and days get judged for what they say or what they do. Like for an example in the book To Kill A MockingBird their was the one character name Boo and everyone was spreading rumors about him cause of the way he is. Just because Boo may not be one of the “average kid” doesn't mean he wasn't one of them. If anything Boo was better than an average kid because he knew what was the right thing to do and what wasn't. Everyone thought Boo was a weirdo but after he saved Jem one day everyone looked at Boo Radley differently.

Though we cannot control what we instinctually comprehend, keeping an open mind is important, especially when meeting someone new.

The book freak the mighty is about how you can’t judge people by the cover.For an example I seen my friends best friend walked up to my friend and said she is weird.Then he noticed that it was his best friend being herself.This is kinda like the book when freak thinks max is a tall and mean but when you get to know them they are way different from the way they look on the outside from the inside.This is why you can’t judge a book by its cover because people are different on the inside then on the outside.

A famous person once said “Judging a person doesn’t define who they are. It defines who YOU are.” Don’t judge someone by how they look comes out in both of the stories “The Lion and the Mouse” by Rob John and “Wonder” by R.J Palacio. Both of the stories have characters that are different from others. Both of the characters get judged, but are very helpful in the end.
