As a woman, mother, and leader this was a relevant video on the socialization of women. She did an excellent job describing her supporting examples. They highlighted the issues women face being taught to have everything together versus being brave. In her attention-getting story, at an older age, she took a step of boldness and it did not end in a perfect manner. She used this situation to expose her flaws. Sharing this vulnerable moment was an upright transition to what it means to be a brave woman. Her examples spoke to the magnitudes of how young girls are already demonstrating bravery. I am aware of the gaps between men and females in the IT field. Nevertheless, her statistics and numbers were astonishing. The speaker did well by connecting
The first thing I liked about this clip was the girls’ confidence. This greatly had a huge impact on the overall video and on me because these girls were confident with what they were saying. Anybody can say claims and counterclaims regarding what they are speaking for but, if they don’t have a loud, clear and strong
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” ~ Winston Churchill. This quote defines what it is to be courageous, to be courageous is to persevere even if you know you will fail. This kind of courage is the courage which both Harold Crick in Stranger Than Fiction and Jean Louise “Scout” Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird. In Stranger Than Fiction, an IRS agent, Harold Crick, with a monotonous life learns that you must not only survive, but you must truly live. This lesson is taught through a series of events that lead to his breaking out of his shell and truly living his life. The events are preliminarily put into action through Harold hearing the voice of the author of a book about his life. In To Kill A Mockingbird, a tomboyish six-year-old, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, discovers the true meaning of camaraderie and bravery. Her friendships are strong but her definition of courage is flawed. In the end, she realizes a great truth, that to really know someone, you have to imagine yourself in their shoes. Courage is important to these two characters, as they both discover what it really means to be brave and what the true definition of courage is. Courage is not always outspoken, sometimes courage is knowing that you will fail, but trying and failing anyway and then accepting your failure.
To me, this video was really inspiring and encouraging. I agree with what Meg Jay had to say and am currently working on bettering myself and my future. It is hard to make a lot of life choices right out of high school and
In the class psychology of women, the class viewed the film Makers Project: Women Who Make America. The film supplied background information about how women were treated prior to the Women’s Movement, as well as during the Women’s Movement, and after. As a result of the Women’s Movement there has been a vast amount of changes impacting society.
This video is effective at explaining the current situation and what needs to change. It targets the audience by encouraging the shared values of community. Generally, through out the video positive behavior is demonstrated and encouraged. I think the message was inspiring because even though the residents are faced with a major life altering situation they are here to share their story and information to influence Canadians to consider the need for new energy and the source of energy by showing the world what is being lost. This was best illustrated by Boon’s statement, when they tell the audience about what their future looks likes, if the project proceeds. They created an effective image looking out their homes window at
Every speaker was humble even though they have this amazing world changing technology. If they went up there and were prideful there would be this disconnect and your message wouldn’t be heard. Danielle has this high up position and has tons of experience but states she still has more to learn. It put her and the audience on the same level.
“Library of Virginia: Women in the Revolution” was not only interesting, but also very inspiring. In this video I learned about women who actually fought in the revolutionary war. It amazed me that some women were simply allowed to follow and fight alongside their husbands. The fact that they received a reward for their service like the men was exciting as well. I had heard of women fighting in the American Revolution before, but it is intriguing to hear their specific stories like Anna Maria
In conclusion, this video had an enormous amount of information and I feel that this summary does not do it justice. However as teachers we must learn and continue to learn all the correct ways in which to aid our students to reach their greatest potential. It is not about us any more, it is about the children and teaching them how to properly behave and treat others will eventually create a better and better
Civil Rights is a very overwhelming event to explain. The way these men and women lived was absolutely terrible. The video explained events that I never knew existed, and provided an eye opening experience I will never forget. As a young white woman who grew up in the twenty first century, I have never had to face obstacles such as these men and women faced. When living in the United States freedom is the overall dream, but no one actually has complete freedom. I unfortunately have not had to opportunity to vote, so I cannot relate their experiences to mine. I do however understand the value of a human being. There is no “perfect” human in the world, just those who think they are.
The video we had watched was really interesting. I really resonated with the idea that no matter how hard Mexican Americans tried, they were never good enough. There are many minority groups that feel this way within the United States, including women. Civil Rights are still something people are fighting for today. This story was unique in the specific group it helped, but it was not unique in what the group was working toward. Discrimination is something that many people face and have faced, but today there are more programs and services in place to ensure that rules and laws are fair. It is important to acknowledge that change has happened because more people of color were allowed to have input in government and areas of society.
Overall, I think there are many aspects to this video that connect to the society we live in today. The video strongly highlights wants vs needs which is a growing problem in our society that needs to be addressed and instilled into humans at a young
The video I have decided to evaluate is “The beauty of being a misfit” by Lidia Yuknavitch. With Lidias speech, she was able to get her point across clearly, I was able to follow and not lose interest or track of the message she was trying to perceive to her audience. Lidia was able to get her main idea and point across by reaching out to her audience with her own personal life story of being a misfit in almost everything she did, but still being a misfit and accomplishing her dream was clear and understanding. So, clear that while she was speaking, my life and my misfits were running through my head. Her purpose of her speech was effective because it made me realize that you can only live out your story and make it what you want to do with
In Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, a society is presented in which every aspect of life is tightly controlled and humans are more like lifeless machines. However, in this attempt at a utopian society, glimmers of humanity are shown through several characters in the novel. Though the characters surrounding the central action are male, two very important women are also portrayed. These two woman are used to not only dispute the sexism demonstrated by men, but also in response to the women's rights issues at the time the novel was written. From the surface, one may conclude that Huxley simply includes women in the plot to balance the story. However, when further examined, the female characters, Linda and Lenina, are in many ways emotionally
One label that I could think of with multiple definitions is brave. From a common perspective, the word 'brave' portrays a characteristic or a person whom able to endure horrific and challenging situation, either physically or mentally, to bring goods. for instance, a man who stopped a criminal from mugging an innocent, or fireman who risks their life to save people trapped inside a burning building can be considered brave because they risk their life to bring goods in the community. On the contrary, some would consider one to be 'brave' if they manage to pull off something reckless and dangerous, or even in doing something life threatening, to self or
The video “assume nothing” was in my opinion a good choice to view in Soc 212. I think that this video was assigned for this class because it definitely fits with the name of this course “woman/men in a changing society”. This video showed not just biologically born females, but biologically born males that shared their stories and how they have changed the way that they identify themselves with a specific gender, as society changes and moves toward accepting that there is more than one gender. As well as, this video helped us see where we ourselves have focused on just two genders and put people into only feminine or masculine categories.
