Lee had given the Confederacy its greatest victory, and was now an idol of the southern people. Lee was one of the most supremely gifted men produced by our Nation. One of the four “greatest Americans” was none other than Robert E. Lee. His picture hung in President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s office. A New York dentist told Eisenhower that Lee helped the United States Government. Lee was a heroic role model to the nation that he has shown when he went to the war. Lee is a bit complicated, but he was extraordinary in what he does. Lee was there to serve the south and protect them. He made sure that they were safe and that the Union would not get in the way of that. His maneuvers were even better.
Born to Revolutionary War hero Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee in Stratford Hall, Virginia, Robert Edward Lee seemed destined for military greatness. He served as a military officer in the U.S. Army, a West Point commandant, and the legendary general of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Lee's ambition is all peaceful ways of resolving the differences between North and South. He was also stand in the middle of two sides, pro-slavery and anti-slavery. His heart toward hometown finally led him resigned the Army of Union and took up command of the Virginia state forces on April 23, 1863. Lee and his Union army achieved great success during the early War at Second Bull Run and Fredericksburg, especially his greatest victory in Chancellorsville. Lee's first field assignment was commanding Confederate forces in western Virginia, where he was defeated at the Battle of Cheat Mountain and was widely blamed for Confederate setbacks.
He was also the only one who can match Robert E. Lee’s success so he was the man to do the job. Robert E. Lee was also going against him because he was part of the Confederacy. He was also very determined to crush
This is the story of Confederate General Robert E. Lee! He was an amazing and remarkable man, general and youngster. Now, read on to learn more about him.
The Civil War was not only a time of regional tension, but of personal tension, especially for Confederate army leaders. The constant pressure from needing to defend and protect Southern independence contributed to the rise of anxiety and stress related medical disorders. Robert E. Lee, a brilliant Confederate general and skilled tactician, was such a case. General Lee 's health during his pre-Civil War years was without blemish. However, with the beginning of the Civil War, Lee 's health experienced noticeable decline. Later in his life, doctors diagnosed Lee with pericarditis, but more modern clinical evaluations of Robert E Lee 's symptoms conclude that his condition was more likely attributed to stress induced ischemic heart disease (Mainwaring-Tribble 244). Lee’s condition was accelerated by the wartime stress and contraction of malaria in 1863, leading to pains on the battlefield which impaired strategical judgment.
Lee, commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, the most successful of the Southern armies during the American Civil War. In February 1865 he was given command of all the Southern armies by Abraham Lincoln. His surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, is commonly viewed as signifying the end of the Civil War and I think Abraham lincoln was upset that he resigned.(britannica) Robert E. Lee was born on January 19, 1807 at Stratford, Virginia. Robert was the fourth child of Henry Lee and Ann Hill Carter Lee. From his mother Robert E. Lee learned patience and discipline. As a young man he was exposed to Christianity and accepted its faith. Robert E. Lee wanted to be like his mom in that she was very Christen like. Robert E. Lee YEARNED to succeed(Robert E.
Lee initiated several great impacts on American history. One of these impacts being a newfound knowledge of mistakes made by Lee and his army, and how to not repeat them. He also left a lasting impression on the fabric of American history due to his brilliant military leadership. Despite his mistakes and miscalculations at the Battle of Gettysburg, he influenced many generations of soldiers and military leaders to come. If the Confederacy had been under a different leadership, the Civil War would have undertaken a much different turn, and the war would not have gone on as long as it did.
Robert E. Lee had many successes in leading the United States Army. What made Lee so remarkable was he carried a lot about what the United States government was doing and believed in a good relationship with the personal that are working for the government. We know that Lee held high standards. He was big on honor, and held people to high standards. He graduated West Point as a military commander. Lee was considered one of the bluest of Virginia blue bloods. Lee was a full blown southerner who would give anything he could to get a southern victory. Lee would be the general of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Lee first will take over and will be in charge from 1861-1865. What Lee’s first task will be to take his army at Second Bull Run and lead them to a Confederate victory.
We know for Robert E. Lee his major success leading up to this was success in the United States Army. Lee’s legacy is held in some controversy. While those closest to him would remember him as the reason for thousands of deaths, many politicians revered his efforts and praised him for his service. According to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, “we remember Robert E. Lee as one of our great American Christians” History remembers Lee as one of the greatest war generals of all time. On the other hand, although Grant did win the war, I do not think his efforts are remembered in such great magnitude as Lee’s. Perhaps this is because he did not have to put up as valiant of a fight as Lee, whose army had a natural disadvantage. Grant’s army simply had more weapons and more men, which were simple factors, but factors worth everything in this
Throughout history, there have been people whose names and faces have become synonymous with the time periods in which they lived. For example, Julius Caesar is synonymous with the late Roman Republic and George Washington is synonymous with the American Revolution. Just like these two men, the name Robert E. Lee has become synonymous with the American Civil War. Not only did Lee rise to become the most important and recognizable person in the Southern Confederacy, but his honor and virtuous acts during and after the war made him a hero to modern-day Americans. Even though he fought for what many consider the morally erroneous side of the war, the virtues of his character have made him a figure in American history
Shaara, through his commentary on General Lee, explains that Lee did not want to fight the war but had to. Lee felt it was his duty to fight for his fellow countrymen, but not for a cause, land, or slavery. “So it was no cause and no country he fought for, no ideal and no justice. He fought for his people, for the children, and the kin, and not even the land, because the land was worth the war, but the people were,” General Lee says (Shaara 263). General Lee fights for himself and has no choice but to fight, knowing in the end that he might be wrong with his cause and pay the price someday. General Lee is not a proponent of war, but he will serve his country with honor and duty if necessary.
Robert E. Lee was a man of family, culture and tradition. Lee was a man who believed in the old English ways in chivalry. The Southern states fought for the same ideals that Lee stood for. Lee believed that this way of life made men to be of a higher class. He was convinced that these old values can build a better nation. Catton express the Confederacy loyalty to these values by saying: “For four years, the southern states had fought a separate war to up held the ideals for which Lee; as if he himself was the Confederacy… the best thing that the way of life for which the Confederacy stood could have ever had to offer” (410).
General Robert E. Lee’s impact on his leadership style have provide his men hope and loyalty, even on the day he surrendered at the Battle of Appomattox Court House in 1865, which is one also one of the last battles of the American Civil War. His men would be willing to fight, under his command, even to the very end. One of his men stated that they will go in and fight some more, if he order them to do so. General Lee’s leadership impacted even the most exhausted, dirty and hungry men, who were willing to fight and to give their ultimate sacrifice, simply because they believe in him. (Gipson, 2003)
Lee, who is from Virginia, had very traditional and old fashioned beliefs. He strongly believed in the idea that having unequal, leadership, and social categories provided an advantage to society. The Confederacy embraced Lee as their leader as well. Furthermore, Confederate soldiers considered Lee
Another thing that stood out to me about General Lee was that he was not a big fan of slavery. He had command of Northern Virginia during the Civil War, so it does make sense. Lee through out this book shows his love for Virginia. Let’s face it, he is solely in this war because Virginia made the decision to leave the Union. He is very loyal to his home state, and it shows through out the
