What Are The Stereotypes In Mean Girls

Tina Fey and Rosalind Wiseman wrote the 2004 cult classic film Mean Girls. The film is about Cady Heron (played by Lindsay Lohan) and her attempt to fit into her first ever school experience after having been homeschooled. In one scene, while trying to navigate through the cafeteria, she is stopped by the queen bee Regina George and is asked to sit. This act jumpstarts the familiar high school journey, and teenage quest of becoming popular. During this journey, many other teenage ideologies and values are highlighted. The first ideology/value that is depicted is teenage loyalty. This ideology is shown twice in the film, through the focus on a social group known as “the plastics”. Out of fear of being kicked out, Cady drastically changes her style in order to fit in and be loyal to the group. This also demonstrates the value of fitting in, and changing oneself for the sake of others. The second time it is seen is when Regina gains weight and only wears sweatpants. However, she is wearing them on a Monday and that goes against the rules. Gretchen and Karen tell Regina that she can’t sit with them because she is no longer loyal to the group. Towards the end of the movie, other values are portrayed such as popularity isn’t everything, being uncool is actually cool, and the importance of being yourself and not changing for others. Cady realizes that being popular made her extremely unpopular with everyone else around her including the most important people in her life, her family. She learns that you shouldn’t change yourself in order to fit in with other people, because true friends except you for who you are. And finally, she learned that even if you are “uncool” it is still way cooler than being popular because you get to be yourself, be friends with whoever you want, and there are no rules dictating how you need to act and what you need to
