Both Edna Pontellier and Kate Chopin were in the struggle to awake for themselves, going against society rules and letting their surroundings see their talent and accept it. Chapin based her portrayal of Edna on her own experiences and desires. Edna and Kate were both influenced by smart independent women. Kate got influenced by her mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Kate’s older women in life influenced her because they taught her how to live without a man. They were all widows and had to take control over businesses and family. Kate had to do the same exact thing when Oscar, her husband, passed away. As where Edna got influenced by Mademoiselle Reisz. The way Edna got influenced by Reisz was because Reisz showed her freedom. Reisz is a pianist who doesn't really say her and Edna are friends, but by their talks …show more content…

The way she did was by writing. They state that she was very successful but when she wrote the Awakening it cause a huge problem because of its content and message. They rejected the publication and Kate got so upset over it that after this incident, she stayed with writing short stories. ""Like Edna, she paid the price for defying societal rules, and as Lazar Ziff explains, she "learned that her society would not tolerate her questionings."" (Wyatt 9) Besides having sexual desires, Edna urges for music and art as well. Mademoiselle Reisz was part of that urge for music and art. When Reisz plays, her guests simply just enjoy the music but Edna is the only one who is touched and moved by her playing. As their relationship goes on, Edna's passion for art increases. She begins to paint, not to become the greatest artist out there but it makes her feel good about herself, keeping her busy and her mind off
