After Lena leaves the Harling place, we hear the town's opinion of Lena, based on the rumors which surround Ole Benson's infatuation with Lena. The story is very pastoral, Lena is described as a barely dressed and beautiful "something wild, that always lived on the prairie . . . yellow hair burned to a ruddy thatch on her head . . . [with skin that] kept a miraculous whiteness which somehow made her seen more undressed than other girls" (Cather 106). The town accuses her of "making Ole Benson lose the little sense he had" (107).        Walter was upset when he heard his mother had spent the insurance money on the house and thought it wasn't fair that Beneatha got some of it for her medical school while he got nothing for his liquor store business. Lena, who always wanted her son to be happy, trustingly gave the rest of the insurance money to Walter. Holding the money in his hands, Walter thanked his mother and appreciated the trust she had in him. Walter then gave the money to his buddies to help him getting his liquor license without realizing that they betrayed him. I do not think it’s the component of Lena’s’ personality led to downfall and it not her undoing and it is definitely not completely her fault. It was her unstable environment and the lack of love present in her life. Keep in mind that in the 20th century women were basically nobody back then. Women were treated as though they were not important. Women duties and only duties back then were to clean, cook have and take care of their husband and children. Women had no voice, there were to be seen and not heard. Lena was illustrated in the story as weak, passive, gentle and docile. I would consider her a strong person but she didn’t know any better.
