The Main Causes of Economic Imbalance in the U.S.

When we turn on the TV, it is not common to see low-paid workers protesting for higher wage and better benefits. Yet, such protests usually end in frustration; in other words, the people in power usually win. A similar pattern repeats monthly or quarterly. The 28th president of U.S. Woodrow Wilson said, “The truth is we are all caught in a great economic system which is heartless.” In other words, I completely agree with this quote. The current economic system is not for everyone but for only a few; also, the institutional devices to protect the majority, like law, are too weak to limit the ruthless system. The current United States’ economic system is fully focused on the rich people, and it is not fair enough to others. The more complex the market becomes, the less normal citizens understand how wealth distribution proceeds. …show more content…

Although there are unethical transactions, the actual strength of punishment is weak, because the related laws are not well organized. Moreover, in the U.S. society, the legal system can be swayed by economic power. For instance, according to an article “Message to Wall Street” by Jeffrey Sachs, JPMorgan’s hedge-fund manager John Paulson, who sold toxic assets, was a huge beneficiary from the financial collapse in 2008. He gained $3.7 billion from the U.S. mortgage market with the money he earned from the unscrupulous trades. Although Paulson glorifies his immoral economic behavior by insisting he create 100 jobs, the amount of money, he unfairly earned, could have created 70,000 jobs at $50,000 a year. Besides, he paid only $153.6 million as fines. The penalty he paid was comparatively small to compensate others for losses money. Also, even though their illegal and disgraceful behaviors were revealed, they upheld the argument that they have done nothing
