Video games are ubiquitous in modern life. It has not only been a source of entertainment, but also played an important role in a child growth and brain development. Many parents have a bad perspective towards video games, they consider it as a devil that corrupts mind and engages their child into non-productive, virtual, and harmful environment. Hence, they try to stop them completely from playing games by all means. This kind of attitude and behavior from the parent might not only effect their relationship with their child, but also deprive the child from some advantages of playing video games that enhance brain power. Therefore, parents should allow their children engage with video games in reasonable amount.
One main concern of parents is that their child would become an addict, and would not be able to perform as a healthy successful individual in the society when they grow up. Indeed, intense and prolong gaming will lead to addiction, which can decrease a person’s productivity, and, disturbing the daily routine, meaning they would stay up all night. However, to be called as an addict one has to show characteristics of addiction, which is a factor of personal behavior, performance, etc. In spite of the number of games available only, one out of ten regular gamer can be categorized as game addicts (webpage), which indicates that not many

Hence, facing problems to interact with the individuals in the society. This is because, the game takes all of their time, not being able to create new friendships. Indeed, most games played recently are online games, which withhold large communities. These communities have enormous number of members that interact together for many purposes. Therefore, gamers can find friends through these communities. Another benefit these communities have is that they provided a medium for people with common
Call of Duty, Mortal Kombat, Grand Theft Auto, and Doom. Many know these games for their violent nature, stemming from their graphic scenes or gameplay involving shooting or beating up opponents, and these factors have caused these games to stir up quite a bit of controversy. For the last few decades, people have debated the effects of these games on the people who play them. Many believe those who play the games become more aggressive as a result of their violent nature, while others argue that playing the games has no effect on one’s behavior. Society should realize that violent video games have, at most, minimal effect on players’ behavior.
Video game addiction is not yet recognized by the American Medical Association as a diagnosable disorder, but addiction has become a very real problem for many video game players. An addiction is when the person needs more and more of a substance or behavior to keep them going, and if the person does not get more, they can become irritable and miserable. Compulsive gaming meets these criteria, and there have been many studied instances where severe withdrawal symptoms in game addicts are seen when parents take away the child’s electronic gaming system. According to chapter three of the book, a study in Singapore of 3,000 middle schoolers found that the
Video games are enjoyable for people and have good benefits for children who use their multiple skills to play and interact with others. In many parts of the world, the common video game is often seen by parents as something that is wasting their child's time or “rotting their brain”. It is a popular misconception that video games are bad for children. What parents do not know is the positive things about video games. Video games have a positive impact on people and help them learn things for experiences to come. People often do not understand that violent video games are not harmful to people because video games allow people to release their anger, video games decrease crime in youth, and because they allow people to be creative and test their
“Electronic games are now an everyday part of childhood and adolescence” (Olsen, 2010). Considering children and adolescence are our future, parents need to consider and monitor how these electronic games are affecting their child. There are more studies afloat that report the negative affects of video games over the positive effects until recently. Children and adolescents become addicted to video games easily so it is important to monitor what they are playing and how it is affecting them and their character. A recent study on many boys and girls reported why they are
Growing up as a gamer, I have experienced many new things in the video game industry. I’ve been playing video games since the Sega-genisis that I started playing when I was three years old. I’ve been gaming almost my whole life, I have watched new console been introduced, seen video games go from 1080p to now an amazing 4K which makes the graphics look amazing. Modern video games even have virtual reality that you as a consumer can now play in your own living room. But, even though we have amazing things in video games the modern gamer is being introducing to a new problem. The problem I am addressing of coarse is micro transactions in video games. Modern game companies are charging you $60.00 dollars for a video game. Once you purchase this said video game you have to grind countless hours in order to obtain specific items that will enhance your abilities in this virtue world, or you can turn your real life currency into this video game currency in order to potentially get these items early on. This concept is called pay to win. The definition of pay to win as stated in wikipedia “is In some multiplayer video games, players who are willing to pay for special items or downloadable content may be able to gain a significant advantage over those playing for free.” Though I believe companies should be allowed to do this in free video game, I think it is wrong to charge someone $60.00 and afterwords try to make them buy guns in order to enhance their gameplay.
Many people stand behind the fact that video games do help people and kids in the development of their brain, while other people do not. The argument based around the idea that video games help the development of people or not has been going on for a long time. Different stories come up on how people are getting seriously harmed while playing video games, but there are other stories coming up about the positives about playing video games. One side believes that playing video games hinders the development of a child’s brain. Also, they believe the more violent video games we see on the markets today cause children to be violent and lash out on family. On the other side of the argument though, scientists go deep in to their research on how video games help the development of the human brain and the positive effects it can have for people long-term. Also, on the same side of the argument video games can be used for educational purposes. This argument has valid points on both sides, while they have good reasoning behind them.
Being a person who plays video games some being violent and others being strategy based, I personally do not think that violent video games make or cause people to act violently. Yeah I will say that some games could be quite graphic but even before games came out, people were violent and acted aggressively towards each other they would fight or bully each other even kill one another they did not even need or have to play games to do such things. People tend to have violent tendencies even without playing a violent video game, just imagine the time you were so angry at somebody that you wanted to harm them be it punching, slapping, or beating them up a game did not influence you to think that way. You thought about hurting that person because you were upset with them or something they did.
Research over the past decade at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Institute for the Future has shown that games consistently provide us with the four ingredients that make for a happy and meaningful life: satisfying work, real hope for success, strong social connections and the chance to become a part of something bigger than ourselves (Mcgonigal 396).
I feel the effect that video games have on children has been a very topical and debatable subject since they were introduced in the 1970’s. I feel it is important because if video games were damaging for children most video game companies would lose their biggest fan base and it would be very damaging for an economy for example in 2012 the entertainment software industry added over 6.2 billion dollars to US GDP. In the US the computer game industry directly and indirectly employees more than 146,000 people. The average salary for direct employees is 94,747 dollars, resulting in a total national compensation of 4 billion dollars also direct employment grew at an annual rate of more than 13 times the growth of the U.S labor market (9% vs. 0.72%) between 2009 and 2012. Many people have researched this economic question and some have been very biased on both sides but this isn’t surprising when you look at the last social phenomenon rock-and-roll or the “devil’s music” to some. Any home that has access to video games (88% of households) I feel the parents will be conscious to how much their children play video games and the effect it has on them. So I have aimed for my research to help parents gain an insight to the effects of video games, signs to look out for and helpful recommendations if they are worried about
“I like video games, but they’re really violent. I’d like to play a videogame where you help the people who were shot in all other games. It’d be called Really Busy Hospital.”-Demitri Martin. Role playing games have been a source of fun and entertainment for children and adults. There are more safe and calm games such as Just Dance, and there are more Perilous games such as Call of Duty. Role playing games such as killer are perilous for school age children putting them in danger, teaching violence, and teaching reckless behavior.
Though gaming has its drawbacks, it also has many benefits to cover them. If controlled, gaming is extremely useful and with the amount of gamers in the world today, it proves that it is not just for children or for teenagers. There are millions of adult gamers that understand the importance of gaming in the under the existing circumstances of the world. Individuals that have studied gamers believe that gaming in today’s
Did you know that seventy-one percent of American teens play video games? Violent video games have a negative effect because they teach children and teens that violence is the way to solve real life problems. The following paragraphs will go into details on how they are bad, how they are good, their bad effects and their good effects.
Video games have been growing in popularity since the day they came out, but what do they do to us?. Most adults see video games as a bad addiction and only see the negative aspects. But truth be told, there are many good things that can come out of playing video games. Video games have many benefits: they can improve knowledge, make people physical, and can help people overcome certain problems.
Excessive video game playing has been a problem with today’s youth they have had more influences over the youth than ever before. That brings to my attention a question, how do video games affect the youth of our society? Excessive video game playing, especially violent video games, can lead to youth violence, a decrease in academic success and many other negative things. I realize that some parents believe that they can be good for children, I agree but I also disagree in some cases. Some parents allow their children to play video games to keep a social life and to learn how to use strategies. This is true in some cases but not in all cases. For instance, other children that play video games alone and are in their rooms constantly can
Since the Early 70’s video games have been giving a bad name. Parents state that video games rot the minds of children and are influencing them do be violent. These accusations are far from the truth. In my research I found that there are many positive effects of gaming. Some of these effects are increased skills, creativity, general knowledge, and also help those in need. Parents can also take proper precautions and look into a game before buying it to see if it meets the criteria discussed in this paper.
