In Ralph Ellison's "What America Would Be Like Without Blacks" The author describes and analyzes the idea of “purging” African Americans from north America. To support this the author describes how they became deeply ingrained in “white “American culture in a short period of time. They began to influence aspects of society such as speech, music and dance. These changes to society where readily adopted without true origin being noticed. The authors work can be described as opinionated description, because it lacks the objectivism of most expository writing. the author fully describes the idea and he gives support information, but within his word choice it’s clear to the reader that the other has a very strong opinion on the black purge. …show more content…

The authors opinion is clear from the beginning he finds the whole idea of a black purge to be extremely absurd he describes it as,: Yet despite its absurdity, the fantasy of a blackless America continues to turn up. It is a fantasy born not merely of racism but of petulance, exasperation and moral fatigue.”. It’s very important that the reader pay attention to how the author chooses to word this statement, the author is giving the reader the idea than like the words he uses every event has many layers and meanings. In most literature the author leaves most of the imagining to the reader, but occasionally the will vividly describe something to guide the reader to a particular idea or conclusion. Such instance can be seen then the author says, “It is like a boil bursting forth from impurities in the bloodstream of democracy.” The author is trying to give the reader a brief glimpse into the mindset of white Americans. they saw blacks a disease the tat had to be removed. The author effectively supports his position that it would be extremely difficult to remove very trace of African Americans from society but using tone, imagery, and flamboyant
