The Western religion has changed numerous times over the five centuries since it has been founded. In Cape Henry, Virginia, 1907, the first Anglican Church was entrenched in America’s colonies, making Christianity the first established religion in the Western Hemisphere. In the early 1700’s, a man named Edward Herbert wrote a book called Of Truth. The book takes the side that individuals can believe in God through reason not just revelation. This led to the birth of Deism around eighteen hundred. In the late 1900, Charlie’s Darwin published his theory of evolution, later leading to the beginning of Atheism. Revelation is “the divine or supernatural disclosure to humans of something relating to human existence or the world”. Deism takes the hard part out of Christianity, making God into a friend vs. the Alpha and Omega. Deism was thought up during the Enlightenment Era by the photospheres, Descartes, Voltaire, Bacon and Locke. One essential idea of the enlightenment was to give every assumption and idea the test of reason. The enlightenment philosophers felt that there was no need for the revelations and rituals of the Christian faith. Deism was popular throughout the 1800s and was relevant to the founding fathers. The United States Constitution does not say God anywhere in it and the Declaration of Independence mentions God but only in deistic terms. Thomas Jefferson thought the Bible was so degrading to the realness of God that he created what was called The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth also known as the Jefferson Bible. It’s the next step up from deism. Atheism is the easy way out of religion; there are no rules besides “don’t believe”. In the late 1900s, philosopher Thomas Hobbes started doubting the bible values, so he created ideas from the earlier writings of the Greek and Roman photospheres. The philosophers never stated that God wasn’t real, but instead mentioned that God doesn’t play a role in human life. They believed that humans created God as a source of reason for the world. Atheism grew in popularity in the early twentieth century because of the spread of Charlie’s Darwin’s theory of evolution. Based off a study performed by Darwin on the Galapagos Islands, he theorized that all life on earth is related and has descended from a common ancestor. Atheism later led to the secularist movement, who were against the involvement of church and state. This is a huge contributor to many debates in America to this day. Atheism is nothing more than the absence of any belief. It has a more simpiler out look on life and supports the concept that one is not held accountable for things they have done. Since the beginning of this great nation there has been a notion of the role of God and religious beliefs on which it was founded. The founding fathers were men of differentiating views on God and religion but the religious views that each held were important to the very principles and laws of the United States of America. An analysis of documents produced during the revolutionary era demonstrate the importance that God and their religious beliefs played in the independence of United States. Religion has been around since the discovery of America. Many European immigrants came to America to escape the traditions of the Church of England. The people wanted religious freedom. Most, however, tried to force their religious beliefs on the people who came to settle in their colonies creating a divide. It wasn’t until The Great Awakening, which started in the New England colonies, occurred that people rose up and revolted against the norms of religion and began to worship the way they wanted to. This divisive time period greatly impacted the American colonies by allowing true religious freedom to all the people.

Religion in British history is greatly influenced by who is reigning at the time. Throughout the 1300s to the 1600s religion changed with each leader. Sometimes the change was quite monumental and other times the leader coming into reign would primarily agree with was laid out before and only change things slightly. Religion includes the church, and sometime the King simply wanted the benefits and the power that the church had and could care less about the doctrine that was being taught, but that is not always the case. We see throughout the 1300s to about the 1500s that the church and religion are typically used for its power. Then in the 1500s to the 1600s a lot of rulers change the doctrine being taught and were being very passionate about religion. Deism is defined as a movement or system of thought advocating natural religion, emphasizing morality, and in the 18th century denying the interference of the Creator with the laws of the universe (deism). Puritanism and Deism
The perceived nature of humanity in regard to religion vastly changed during the 19th century. Early American religion held as one of its core tenets original sin and human depravity. Essentially this meant that early Americans believed humans to be inherently corrupt and amoral creatures. Calvinists believed that a moral government was needed to control human depravity. However, over time this belief changed. For example, Deists believed that men were capable of virtue and were endowed by God with inherent natural rights.
This ideology is not new to society, but is dated to around 539 B.C. and is firmly rooted in American humanity (“Freedom of Religion & Public Education”). Religious freedom is a universal human right that protects the choice of religion someone chooses and practices. Without this civil right, people cannot think, express or act upon with religious liberty and this can result to acts of violence, inequality and prejudice throughout the state (“Freedom of Religion or Belief.”). A community that consists of an array of acceptances is going to allow diversity to flourish. James Madison brings an important transformation of 1800’s and 1900’s America through religious freedom.
Darwinism, named after Charles Darwin, was a theory of biological evolution which stated that all species develop through natural selection, the survival of organisms more likely to last due to mutations in their DNA. Although there were no objections to Microevolution, that is, changes within a species, when the idea of Macroevolution, or the Transmutation of species, the changes between species, was published, it was attacked and kept out of scientific mainstream for some time. Although Darwinism is often used to try and disprove or nullify religion (most often Christianity), Darwin himself believed that science had nothing to do with religion, and thought that someone could believe in both God and Evolution. Christians’ biggest issue with Darwinism was that they believed it was trying to disprove Christian history and give a ‘more correct’ explanation of human origins.
Deists valued brain over heart, and were more logical thinkers. They did believe in God, but they would analyze and look over the Bible, God, and Jesus with more of a logic and reasoning point of view. Some of their fundamental beliefs were people were born with goodness, separation of church and state, the revolution, and skepticism. In the autobiography, Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson, Deism is expressed through his perspective. Throughout his autobiography, he includes deistic views on religion. “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with inherent and inalienable rights” (Jefferson, 141). Jefferson believes that all men have rights that God gave them, that no man can take away. Deists disagreed with the compilation of church and state, because they knew that not only that there are many religions and beliefs, but the church and state would have different opinions on political issues. “...a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation,” (Jefferson, 141). Atheist religions include Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Scientology. Atheism is the non-belief in god, so Atheists have no belief in god (Crabtree). Atheism is not so much a religion, but a belief. “Atheism isn 't, therefore, ‘a religion’ and nor should it be capitalized, any more than ‘monotheist’ or ‘polytheist’ should be” (Crabtree). Christians do not identify themselves as monotheist. They identify themselves as Christians or their specific denominations. For this reason, Atheists should not be radicalized as an extreme religion or rather extreme lack of religion. About 13 million (nearly 6 percent of Americans) describe themselves as atheist or agnostic (Smith). It is unrealistic that any person out of this 13 million will become a future President.

In The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, a woman, Louise, is finally free from the entrapment that contains her when she discovers that her husband is dead. Saddened by the death of her husband, Louise “wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arms,” but this dejection fades away moments after Louise enters her room alone. Alone in the room, she strives to continue her depression, but her attempt at feeling sad fails because of the unrestricted freedom that she now has as a result of her husband’s death. Contentment comes as a result of the freedom that Louise gains. While alone in her room, this woman sees “the new spring life” and senses “the delicious breath of rain” that is in the air.
