West Florida is starkly different from the preconceived images most U.S citizens have of Florida which consist of huge beaches filled with foreign tourist, high-class hotels and exotic cars. Instead, West Florida contains a mixture of southern agrarian roots and small tight knit communities that have become hallmarks of the deep souths perception. One such area which exemplifies the deep southern aspects of west Florida is the Cove, a small inlet which is located near the current location of Panama City, FL and bordered on it North eastern, southern and western portions by the Massalina Bayou and the St. Andrews Bay. The Cove is a beautifully slightly reclusive settlement that fostered a very inclusive tight knit community in Florida since its first settlements in the 18th century. Jeannie Cooper time stakingly interviewed and researched numerous families in the area to accumulate a detailed history of the Cove through the eyes of the generational families who resided in the area. Instead of million dollar hotels and famous celebrity strips accumulating across the bay, West Florida has opted for a more recluse lifestyle, which has promoted the growth of tight knit communities. One of the least covered areas in West Florida is Panama Cities Cove, which exemplifies the small close community nature typified in West Florida. Jeannie Cooper author of The Cove Panama City Neighborhood introduced the areas to a wider audience when she published a comprehensive photo album, which detailed the 20th century history of the area. The book is a great contribution to the historical understanding of the area as not many works have been completed detailing the area in any form. Jeannie Cooper book is a great first read for any Florida citizen trying to learn a little more about one of Florida’s least known
In the 1500’s St. Andrews was named by Spanish settlers as they explored the coast. Pirates also found that deep pockets were good spots to lie and wait for European ships on a route to Mexico or Spain. According to researchers an old Spanish galleon and a 700-pound cannon were found during the construction of a motel in the early 60’s, proving the presence of such pirates. This was the ‘opening the door to the possibility of pirate treasure!’ Sinking of modern day ships for artificial reefs, the Gulf of Mexico waters off the coast of the city of Panama City Beach are a diving spot for divers searching for this ‘treasure’ and some have even come up with different types of treasure.
Masked behind the aging oak trees covered in moss, and past the emerald waters of the panhandle, stands a white mansion that reveals the history of the local of Point Washington area. A large, white, almost plantation-style home is the focal point of Eden Gardens State Park, and a symbol of the legacy of the family. Large centuries-old oak trees embellish the land surrounding the house, making it a pivotal icon of the nature left untouched. The house itself contains hundreds of years of memories, and the land that occupies the area encompasses an even larger spectrum of Florida history. Once the site of a family lumber mill business in the late 1880’s, today it stands unnoticed as a legacy in the South Walton area of Florida.

Deep in the thick swamps and woods of Northern Gulf County, amidst the buzz and sting of mosquitoes, chirps of squirrels, and swirls of the Apalachicola, is a long-lost story. One hundred and eighty years ago the town of Iola sprang out of the cypress swamp of what is now north east Gulf County. That small community, was, and still is an enigma in the wilderness of territorial Florida and has all but faded from the memory of Gulf County and is nothing but a boat ramp now.

McCandless actions are seemed to be motivated from fictional works such as The Call of the Wild, White Fang, “To Build a Fire,” “An Odyssey of the North,” and “The Wit of Porportuk.” From these books, The Call of the Wild by Jack London is his favorite since he idolize the author. Judging from London’s book, McCandless attempts to mimic the life of the main character Buck, a dog who escapes his sheltering world and adapts to the harsh conditions of Canada. The most prominent chapter that depicts the beginning of canine’s journey is Chapter 2, which starts off by displaying his fears and bemusement when confronted with his new home(London 15). This relates to McCandless in a sense that his middle-class upbringing evidently protected him cold
Orlando Florida is known worldwide for its entertainment facilities, notably Walt Disney World, Universal Theme Park and other attractions. In high school, I wanted to leave Florida for a brighter future and more opportunities for politics in Washington D.C. I believed that I would receive a better education up north and that I would be in a more challenging and intellectual atmosphere with the change of geography. Believing that southern education was subpar to northern educational systems, I did not want to get stuck in Florida and its never changing intellectual climate. Those were my misguided beliefs. I sorely misjudged the massive amounts of opportunities in South Florida.

A rippling breeze stirred as my family and I coasted into downtown Mackinac Island, which happened to be cloudy. My family loves the Island. My mom and dad love the porch at the Haan's 1830 Inn, I love downtown, as well as a few other special places, and so does my brother (for the ice cream, of course!), and my sister loves pretty much everything! Downtown is one of my favorite parts of the island. So many bustling tourists, so many busy shops, so many strong, hard-working horses. I looked around as we coasted through downtown, even though I pretty much knew it by heart. I saw some of my favorite shops and restaurants, like the Chuckwagon, The Pink Pony, the Lilac tree Hotel & Spa ( Which has Mackinac Island´s bookstore, a toy store called Great Turtle Toys, a shoe store called Birkenstocks, and a fudge shop that also has
