Proposal statement Food is a requirement of living organisms in order to sustain life as well as provide nourishment. However, not everybody has access to food due to un-foreseen circumstances that put individuals in need of food aid. These circumstances can be either man-made such as over farming or natural for example drought. In conducting this research, evidence will show some current solutions of providing food aid in Kenya as well as understanding what the future potential developments are.
Research topic: Food aid in Kenya: a problem or solution?
Research question: Is food aid a sustainable strategy to solving the food crisis in Kenya?
Thesis: Providing food aid to Kenya is good as long as it is well distributed. However

I will also try to find answers to the questions asked above. The proposal will also include three chapter headings: types of agricultural developments currently used and future ones; Pros and cons of using these agricultural developments; analysis of data and conclusion. The problems or solutions to food aid will also include two subheadings each; problems (Budget, food choices, governments) and solutions (outsourcing, growth speed and no limitations to the amount of donations received).

Canada and the world backgrounder, “International development – Nongovernmental organization” Canada and the world backgrounder 69, No.1 (2003): 30-31 This article focuses on various aspects of food aid in particular agencies that provide the food, evaluations of policies and procedures, finding solutions to help reduce the food crisis by introducing
The second part of the book focused on the various organizations and institutions aimed at improving food security for those in need. There are “thirty-seven million Americans and fourteen million children who rely on food assistance” (Carney 2015:135). This represents an increase from previous years. The book criticizes the
The issue of hunger in africa has caused major chaos around the world. The fact that families and children are left to die because there is insufficient food; therefore, families are separated and left to suffer. For example, on page 1 of “Why Africa Is Still Starving”, by Alex Perry, it states that, “From January to May, the fields were parched and brown. And one failed harvest is enough to turn Ethiopia, a nation of 66 million farmers, a humanitarian catastrophe”. Alex Perry explains how the soil of Africa is not rich enough to grow any goods or rich crops.
It is clear that the main reason for there being food surpluses in some countries and shortages in others is the widening gap between the rich and the poor. Yet nearly 1 billion people go hungry worldwide, which is one in seven individuals. This is a concerning statistic that questions whether the world can produce enough food for our growing population in the future. There is a serious concern that food shortages won’t just affect the poor, but all of us. Food is becoming too expensive and food riots are becoming more apparent.
The environment is an increasingly important issue in development as those living below the poverty line directly rely on the water and land resources surrounding their communities. With only 20% of land capable of producing crops and 75% of its workforce engaged in agriculture[4], Kenyan farmers face problems of soil erosion, deforestation, water pollution, and desertification. The increasingly severe drought has left 3.5 million people without enough food to survive while pastoralists have lost their herds to starvation and conflicting tensions mount over the scarce water resources. The population largely depends on agriculture as their form of income and nutrition. Communities have had to rely on humanitarian aid and help organizations to maintain its agriculture and for food supply.
The food security in Haiti is another issue that must be described to understand it better. Via USAID the number of people living in extreme poverty is about 2.5 million Haitians, most of their income being forced to be spent on subsistence farming (Agriculture and Food Security). The need for more accessible and better food is very evident with statistics like 53.4% of the population is undernourished, 21.9% of the under 5 population has experienced stunting because of the lack of nutritional intake. The problem is not getting any better in 2000 the population that was undernourished was 55.2% to today where it is at 53.4% (Global Hunger Index). The evidence for food security being a problem is overwhelming and where most of our attention will be spent. The solution for this issue is heavily involved but our organization will address this issue through many different avenues. The center called “Training for Food” will provide a service that rewards Haitians for coming to workshops about how to farm effectively with
It is estimated that two billion people worldwide suffer from malnutrition. Out of those people, “52 million children under 5 years of age are wasted, 17 million are severely wasted and 155 million are stunted” (Malnutrition). 3 million of those children are from the Democratic Republic of Congo. EE: There are several reasons for the concentration of malnutrition in the DRC. E: First of all, The Democratic Republic of Congo has been in the middle of a civil war for nearly 10 years. So the question is, how does this affect the dietary needs of citizens? Displaced settlements have trouble receiving healthcare and they also face “alarming shortages of food, water, and shelter”. Overall, there have been 2.7 million displaced people and those rates are still going up. In addition, there are 120,000 refugees fleeing to these provinces, and in 5 of the eastern provinces alone, there are 6.7 million hungry people. (10 Facts). Settlements, such as Tanganyika, have seen nearly half a million citizens displaced within a year (Democratic Republic of Congo). These provinces will soon see these numbers climb if something is not done to stop this growing issue.
According to Kutzner, author of world hunger, there is enough food to feed everyone in the world. With much of the world 's agriculture being produced out of developing countries, (Kutzner), the root causes of starvation is within the economic and political factors keeping countries in poverty. Although natural catastrophes and environmental problems for food production have contributed to the food security issue in third world countries such as Ethiopia and Malawi, the Famine crisis in these countries is man-made, and is ultimately the result of issues including government policies on food markets and exports. In analyzing the root causes of food insecurity in the two developing countries Ethiopia and Malawi, I will be focusing on man-made famine from a socioeconomic theoretical lens, focusing on factors such as population, employment, and poverty. I have come to the hypothesis that famine in these two countries is made-made due to the policies that keep these countries from modernizing. I predict that due to the current economic conditions, the issue will not be resolved any time soon.
Hunger in Africa is one of the biggest problems faced in this world today. Most of these deaths are faced by children under five. Even though there is a lot of food in the world, people in Africa can’t access these foods because of poverty. Because of the hunger problem, the majority of people suffer from blindness, anemia, malnutrition related problems and other diseases because they are not getting enough diet. Nicholas Bariyo (news story) researched how the food shortage has double in Africa over the last couple of years. In the Washington post an anonymous writer talks about how people in Africa suffer between those who suffer from food shortages caused by drought and pestilence and those who hold deep suspicions about the
Food security is a worldwide concern because of the increases in the price of food, food shortage and other various reasons similar to these. These issues are addressed not only by governments but also by many non-governmental organizations. Clearly the issue of food security is a human right that is of the most importance.
Malawi is a small, land locked country in southern Africa, that has population of 12 million people (Menon, 2007). 65 percent are below the poverty line and 28 percent live in extreme poverty, It is known as one of the poorest country in Africa (Menon, 2007) Reports had shown that, instance of food insecurity has been happening for some time, however little attention was payed (Menon, 2007). In 2002, 500-1000 people died from hunger or hunger related diseases (Menon, 2007). The latest figures showed a huge leap in the number of people in need of food aid, over 8 million based in an article release on May 27, 2016, (Masina, 2016). In April of the same year the government stated that 2.8 million people were in need, a
As an example of the US food programs in Haiti one can observe the effects of the Food for the Hungry program in the 1980’s. This food aid program in held within the US Farm Bill. The program aims to improve food security to developing countries. As outlined earlier in the paper Haiti’s food security has worsened, leading to the conclusion that the efforts of this program have failed. Through this program US food
Food insecurity is an ongoing issue all over the world; as of 2012 1 billion people are suffering from starvation and malnutrition. (Sasson, 2012, pg.1, paragraph 1) Why has food insecurity become such a problem not just locally, but globally? Olivier de Schutter, special rapporteur of the United Nations on the right to food says, “If most poor countries are still very vulnerable it is because their food security depends too much on food imports whose process are increasingly high an volatile.” (Sasson, 2012, pg. 3, Hunger: A Global Shame, paragraph 4)
“ Africa has been suffering food crisis for years and years. Throughout all the recurring droughts that just come naturally, it is very difficult for Africans to grow food. In America alone we have given Africa billions and billions of dollars for food aid. Everyone is wondering “Why are Africans are still starving, and asking for more money?”.(Famine in Africa) Many of the places in Africa are caught up in food insecurity.Food insecurity is the main reason for starvation in Africa.Without having the nutrition of food it will cause Africans to be ill. Being ill causes Africans to not have energy and without energy it is difficult to go out and plant and raise crops. “From illness in Africa alone 12 Africans
Many Ethiopians cherish their country’s historical success and view theirs as a symbol of freedom and prosperity. However, issues in regards to food shortages have significantly weakened Ethiopia’s global influence today. Food shortage in Ethiopia has been a leading contributor to poverty, nutritional
International food aid is largely driven by donors and international institutions (typically influenced by the interests of the donors). In 1967, the Food Aid Convention (FAC) provided a set of policies for the donor countries, and is monitored by the Consultative Sub-Committee on Surplus Disposal (CSSD). The CSSD’s primary purpose is to ensure that food aid does not affect commercial imports and local production in recipient countries. In effect, the CSSD ensures that food aid does not displace trade. And so it is criticized for serving the interests of donors, because when accepting food aid, recipients commit to pay for imports of commercial food along with food aid as Frederic Mousseau notes in a report titled Food Aid or Food Sovereignty? Ending World Hunger In Our Time.
