The Denich Gym never sounded so loud, with spectators cheering on their fellow Joint Task Force Guantanamo Troopers and U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay personnel as they participated in the power lifting competition June 25. There were three events: bench press, dead lift and squat. The participants attempted to lift the maximum amount of weight they could. If they were unable to on the first try, they regrouped and attempted two more times for a total of three attempts. Out of the three attempts, the judges calculated the heaviest weight lifted and gave a power index number based on the competitor’s bodyweight, and then it was on to the next event. Even though the participants were competing against each other, they couldn’t resist cheering on their competitors to push more and lift heavier. Lifters exchanged different techniques and strategies to get the weight up. Many of the lifters who competed are members of the 1000lb …show more content…
Edward Hawthorne in the lightweight division, Matthew Sickles in the middleweight division and Grant Price in the heavyweight division, won first place in their respective male divisions. There will be another powerlifting competition held in December or January, we have not set a date yet, said Kaleb Heninger, Fitness Coordinator with the Denich Gym. Kaleb stated he would like to thank all the lifters who participated, the volunteers who helped put the competition together and tear it down and all of the Morale, Welfare & Recreation staff for their support. “My advice to those who would want to compete and do well would be to dedicate yourself in and out of the gym,” said Alpha. “How you fuel yourself, how you rest, and also how you mentally prepare all play a part. Then after that just have fun with it because it should be enjoyable above all
The men won the gold medal. “He had come to realize that the medal wasn’t the most important thing he would take from Germany (355). He made some great friends, that no one could break the bond, he learned to trust again. I loved when Joe said this “Abandon all doubt, trust absolutely”(355)
Holly Holm came into UFC 193 as the underdog, but the preacher's daughter shocked the world as she KO'd Ronda Rousey, who previously had a perfect UFC record.
“My partner (Casey Sparkman), he’s already stepped up this year and won big duals,” Miller said. “He’s a guy that’s going to step up. (Jairod James), he’s going to step up. He’s won two out of the three of his MAC starts. Our heavyweight, (Devin Nye), he’s gotten some big wins when we needed them.”

The athletic training profession as we know it today first came into existence during the late nineteenth century with the establishment of intercollegiate and interscholastic athletics in the United States. (Prentice, 2014) Prior to this, early civilization athletics were unorganized. Although they were unorganized, there is information that suggests that Greek and Roman civilizations featured people who assisted athletes in reaching their peak physical condition. The evolution of intercollegiate athletics after World War I led to a new demand to prevent and manage athletic injuries. (Prentice 2014)
It is a reflection of the joy I saw and experienced at the meet. Everyone is so engaged, no matter if they won or lost. We are running and jumping and joking around with our friends like we did when we were eight years old in the schoolyard. In the airport Sunday afternoon, amidst a sea of tired looking, out of shape, unsmiling people with their heads in their cell phones, there was lots of healthy looking, animated people in athletic gear talking and reliving the last three days with each other, a smile on every face. At 79.5 years old, I feel so blessed to be able to do this with my friends."
Every great thing has its legends. Here are some from this great sport. The first great legend is a man known as Fred "Dr. Squat" Hatfield. Hatfield made history throughout the sport of powerlifting, being known best as the first man to squat over 1,000 pounds in a competition. He achieved 1,014 at a bodyweight of 255 pounds (American Strength Legends 2). He did this at the age of 45, as well. Even more so, he could bench press 573 pounds and deadlift 766 pounds. All through his life, Fred was an athlete, excelling in soccer, track, and gymnastics. He received many degrees associated with fitness and sports training, now owning one of the largest personal training organizations in the world; the International Sports Sciences Association. He has also trained the U.S.A. powerlifting squad and many other world renowned athletes. Some other huge achievements of Dr. Hatfield were winning three world powerlifting championships and setting thirty world and national records in five different weight classes, something never done by any other lifter. Fred competed from the 70's to this very day at the age of almost sixty (American Strength Legends 2).
Competitors did jumping jacks and then tried to breathe through a straw while holding their noses to experience what it is like for
Did you ever wonder how to successfully complete the three events of a powerlifting competition? The three events of each competition are the squat, followed by the bench, and finally the deadlift. About five years ago, I wanted to compete in powerlifting but did not fully understand the requirements of each type of lift. However, now after competing numerous times, I have a great understanding on how to successfully complete these three lifts. Powerlifting is a complex and challenging sport, but when dedicated, it is very rewarding and exciting.
I've always been the odd man out on any sports team who looked forward to conditioning at the end of practice and would hold my plank an extra few seconds until I really felt the pain. I loved pushing myself beyond my expected limits and the satisfaction of leaving the gym knowing I gave my full effort. Although the thought of taking a weight lifting class was extremely intimidating, I acknowledged my deep love for training and bettering myself.
Natural God-given talent can only get an athlete so far. At some point they will need to realize that hard work will take them much further than talent ever could taking them. When an athlete trains during the off-season by lifting weights it helps him or her become physically ready for the season ahead. Without pre- training, showing up on the day of tryouts and hoping to be great and being able to do well is a horrible idea. A weight-lifting program is essential for any athlete to achieve top performance.
As the famous bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger once said, “Training gives us an outlet for suppressed energies created by stress and thus tones the spirit just as exercise conditions the body.” During my 3 years of training, I learned much about what it takes to make an out of shape person to a healthy and fit person with just the right decisions and knowledge. For instance, I learned the importance of consistency, in which in order to be actively fit and healthy, there must be consistency. As a young fitness fanatic, I

“212 on deck!” At this moment, I can hardly stand still while I wait for my turn to lift. I’ve been up since early this morning and have been waiting a couple of hours for my weight class to start. There have been weeks of preparation just for this one day, the first of many for the season. The sport of powerlifting is serious and the only way to be at the top of your class is to practice, increase your lifted weigh and be prepared. Most people have limited knowledge of this sport, like I did when I first began competing. However, once you find yourself at a powerlifting meet, there is no going back. The sport is friendly yet competitive. For some, placing in their weight class is all that matters. Meanwhile, others are focused on increasing their bench, squat or deadlift to beat their current best. At this moment, all that matters to me is that I get all my lifts today.
