Living on a planet covered by 71% water makes it easy to be unappreciative of such a valuable resource. Humanity hasn’t just relied on water to live, but also to make advances to society. Overtime, humans have progressively learned how to use water more and more efficiently to fit their needs. Water has had an immense impact on human history, religion, and science. Water has been crucial to human history. The humans that took the most advantage of water in ancient times were the Egyptians. The Egyptians learned to use the Nile’s periodical floods in order to survive. When the Nile flooded, the Egyptians would set up irrigation canals, which would fertilize the soil and provide water for the crops. Another example of a society in ancient history using water is the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire built massive aqueducts that went at a slight downhill angle towards cities. This would allow the cities to have a sufficient supply of water, which they would use on building sewage systems, fountains, and baths. For example, Christianity sees water as a symbol for washing away sins. Therefore, many Christian denominations use it for religious rituals like Baptism and Easter Mass. In the Hindu faith, water is known to be sacred. Because of this, many rivers appear to be “holy rivers” and many Hindu holy places are located near water. Judaism also sees water as a form of cleaning human error. A widely known Jewish story, Noah’s Ark, shows water to appear holy. In the story, God uses water to wipe away the impurities of the Earth. The Jews also have a ritual of washing themselves with water to become pure. Lastly, Islam uses water to clean themselves before praying. This is because in order to pray, Muslims must be pure.
