According to the article "Wasted Food = Wasted Water" by Kyle Rabin, the amount of wasted water, influenced by wasted food, is "by one clever comparison" roughly the same amount of water that is found in Lake Erie (Kyle). While this comparison is indeed clever, allowing the reader to more accurately imagine the water that is wasted, it is saddening to think of the huge amount of water that is literally put down the drain every year. All of this water could be saved if we cut down the amount of food waste we produce each year, in the US alone.
As the world population rises, we are using more and more energy and it is depleting faster than ever. Our fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) will not last forever and at some point we will have to switch over completely to renewable energy sources. While most of the world still uses non-renewable energy sources, the future will rely on renewable energy and its applications. Right now, over 90% of the world still uses fossil fuels and developing countries even burn wood to generate energy. At the rate we are using our fossil fuels, they will not last us far into the 22nd century. Additionally, big consumers of fossil fuels like China, U.S., Russia, and India are creating large amounts of pollution and it is only increasing. For instance, India has major issues with pollution because of heavy traffic (which releases more fuel emissions into the air), the burning of biomass (wood and other organic matter), and runoff into lakes and rivers. Right now, our biggest goal should be to figure out how to implement more forms of renewable energy in our own society. My total water consumption is 1,920 gallons per day, and the U.S. average is 2,088 gallons per day. My home water consumption is eighty-four gallons a day, including the water used for showering and doing laundry. Since I don’t use the dishwasher and I don’t have an outdoor pool in my apartment, I saved quite a bit water comparing to the average Americans who have their own house. As for the diet part, my water consumption is 659 gallons and it is way less than 1,056 gallons, which is the U.S. average. I eat two servings of beef, three servings of poultry and three servings of pork weekly as dinners. I have salad, fruits and yogurt for lunch and milk and cereal for breakfast. I drink about one cup of milk daily during my breakfast. I usually don’t drink coffee unless I am exhausted and have to cram before midterms. People are being put through immense pain everyday just to get to water. They walk for hours and hours giving up their lives for the sake of water. They carry five gallons for hours so they can provide water for 4 people, a lot of times its more than 4. They walk thorny bushes with no shoes while carrying 41 pounds on their back. They don't have an education because all their time goes to getting water so they cant do anything to stop the cycle. They don't have an education so they can afford to live in a nicer place that actually has water. They cant get an education because then they wont be able to get water. The water they drink from the river is also polluted with harsh chemicals. Thankfully their is organizations to help with this cause. They include water for people, h2o for life, and water.org.
