Water by the Spoonful, by Quiara Alegría Hudes, is a Pulitzer Prize winning play exploring the story of an Iraqi War veteran as he faces a past filled with addiction, injury, family, and love. Water by the Spoonful uses many character lenses to create a story that shows what happens when the past collides with the future. The play explores themes of acceptance and forward progress. One of the places that this forward progress can be observed is in the actions of Odessa’s internet peers. Fountainhead attempts to find recovery despite his inability to be truthful with himself. He goes to the website for help but he still pretends that he is not an addict. In the end, Fountainhead learns that he must go all the way if he ever wants to find recovery. He takes Odessa into his care in order to enhance his progress. Chutes&Ladders faces a similar rut. He believes that he must stay in the same place in life if he ever wants to maintain control over his addiction. His addiction recovery becomes the very thing holding him back. Odessa’s prodding eventually convinces him that Orangutan needs his help. Chutes&Ladders must learn to swim. Odessa is haunted by long-held guilt regarding her child’s death. Despite all of her progress, Odessa’s life is still hanging on the edge of relapse. Elliot’s well-placed words are enough to push her over the edge. Despite her strong online persona, Odessa relapses and nearly dies. In the chaos created by Elliot’s words, Odessa realizes that she is no longer a mother. She does not feel safe and ends up taking pills because she thinks that they can get rid of her pain. She is only an adolescent and does not realize that she can ruin her life by becoming addicted to taking pills. After a while, she meets a sixteen-year-old boy and without her seeing it, he takes advantage of her. He knows that she is going through a lot, so he pretends that he loves her so he can have sex with her. Erica truly believes that she is in love, so when he asks to have unprotected sex, she agrees. She becomes pregnant and the “love of her life” decides that “he ain’t ready for a kid,” so he leaves her. Now Erica is stuck with the responsibility to not only take care of herself, but also for the child that she will be having. Even though her life is not fair, she is unable to face her consequences and “she says she’s about to run away and never come back.”
