Watch House Shift

On the 16th of February 2018, I participated in the ‘Walk in Their Shoes Program’ and completed a watch-house shift at the Moonee Ponds Police Station. I reported to Acting Sergeant Jessica GRAHAM who was my supervisor for the shift and worked alongside Senior Constable Michael BECKER. These members provided me with insight and information on what a typical watch-house shift would entail.

Similarities between the roles of a PSO and police member include; their strong focus towards safety, demonstrating a high level of communication, building community engagement by establishing rapport with people in culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, deterring anti-social behaviour, dealing with people impaired by drugs and alcohol and responding to incidents and emergencies.

Both roles are similar as they are constantly in the public eye and therefore, all members must share the same principles to follow the core organisational values and ethics enshrined by Victoria Police.

Senior Constable BECKER explained the entire process that was required to complete the report. A statement was obtained from the victim giving a description of the incident which included the location where the assault occurred, approximate time, date and if the victim knew the offender. Photo evidence of the victim’s injuries and broken reading glasses were then taken to add exhibits of evidence for the report. After all information was collected a LEDR MK2 crime report was then completed including a detailed narrative of the assault.
