The reason Rome is better than Athens is because they were superior to their enemies. The Roman Republic was in the Italian peninsula in 509 to 27 BCE. Rome was better than was better than Athens is because they were more uniform in their systems and rules and laws. They both had their Downpoints and their Strengths but Rome still came out stronger.Rome was able to thrive as a more advanced system than Athens because they had a more organized voting system, allowed for equitable rights, and had allowed citizen to actively participation the government. In Rome they had a very uniform and orgainized voting system. In document C it stated that the ruin of Athens was that they did not let the foreigners vote and calling them aliens. They also
Ancient Athens prided itself upon being a democratic society, but was it really? It's true that it was ruled by the people, however only a small percentage of people. Document C states that only 12 percent of people actually vote. And who are those 12 percent? The 12 percent of the whole population that voted was men whose parents were both citizens of the city (see Document B). Slaves, women, and resident foreigners were barred from voting.
When you leave a really beautiful cake outside and don’t watch it, it will soon be melted, smeared, bitten, etc. because you didn’t take care of it. Just as cakes can break down, so can empire's from not being taken care of. There are several reason why historians believe Rome “feel”. The most significant reasons why Rome fell were because of military mistakes, corruption, and political instability. No matter how big and strong the empire was, those factors were devastating to why Rome fell.
Athens is a city-state in the southern Mediterranean that has had many accomplishments but not many in terms of their citizenship. Rome is a very large, successful, fair city-state in terms of citizenship and other things and it is located in the southern Mediterranean. Citizenship in Athens and Rome: Which was the better system of citizenship? Rome has a better system of citizenship because it had fair rights, it allows more people to become citizens, and it is in a controlled and organized matter.
One of the most significant reasons that may prove that the Roman Republic is not a democracy is its system in which includes flaws that are not very democratic. In other words, the system can be viewed as rigged. According to Source C, one example of this was that all voting of the people was only held in Rome. This meant that citizens who were not very wealthy or had the ability to waste time
For my first source I found a chart and on (3 to the right and 1-5) down it states which citizens could vote, the only one with a yes next to it was free males. Not metics, women, children, slaves. This evidence supports my answer because it shows how much of the population could actually vote. For my (second piece of evidence is on the picture) it states. “Only free male citizens of athens were members of the assembly with the right to vote. Women, slaves, foreigners could not participate.” This evidence supports my answer because it shows that one tenth of the population could vote. That makes it just like Ancient Rome because It was based on aristocracy not democracy. I say this because in the book in section 2 government on page 332 it states “ The Roman Senate Was A Council Of Wealthy And Powerful Romans That Advised The City’s Rulers.” This evidence supports the connection because it shows that is was a very oligarchy relating to greece and it’s so called
Rome or Athens, who do you think had a better system of citizenship? In a comparison between Athens in 400 BCE and Rome in 1 CE, I believe Rome had a better system of citizenship. While both occupied the area that is modern day Italy and had thriving cultures, Rome had a better system of citizenship for three reasons: first, people with knowledge of how to run a government were members of the senate; second, Roman cities were willing to grant partial citizenship; and third, Roman citizens had rights. Because people with knowledge of how to run a government were members of the senate, the administration ran smoothly.
Do you think Athens or Rome was better? Rome was a better system in my opinion my three reasons are they let more people have citizenship , they also were not strict which meant they allowed more people in their republic than the city-state of Athens, They had more men who fought with them in the wars that had citizenship. Now I will tell you my explanations of why I chose these three.
First of all, Ancient Greece was not a democracy because there were no records to show if people were of citizen birth or of age, such as a birth certificate like we have today. To solve this problem, the current Greek citizens got to vote if the potential voter was of age. As stated in Document B, “... current citizens give their votes first on whether the new candidates appear to be of the age set by the law.” After the current voters got to decide if the potential voters were of age, they voted on whether the new supposedly of-age males were of citizen birth, meaning if both parents were citizens. Also stated in Document B, “... the current citizens give their votes on whether the candidate is free born, and has two citizen parents as the
In contrast Rome did not have the geological barriers that Greece had. Therefore, under the Roman system, cities answered to a central government that was chosen by the citizens. The fact that Romans had to elect senators gave citizens the need for a unified and participant society. The Roman war strategies were also more unified than the Greek strategies, thus, ensuring their success.
Athens had a better government in my opinion. I think Athens had a better government because they created a democracy. According to the Athens and Sparta Document Set, a democracy means “rule by the people”. The Athens also got to abolish politicians they did not like. Athens also had ten generals, meanwhile, Sparta has two kings. In my opinion, I think that having ten generals is better than two kings because they understand you more. Sadly not all Ancient Athens were citizens, but if a free male would be a citizen if his father was a citizen of Athens. Later on, they changed that law, it was then bothering the father and mother had to be a citizen for the child to be considered a citizen. Sadly the women didn’t get that many rights but they soon they got more status. The Athens also made it to where not only the wealthy can engage in the jury service. In the Athens, you have to be an 18-year-old man to complete military training. On the other hand, in Sparta, you have to be a 30-year-old to complete military training. Basically, I’m trying to say that the Athens had a better
To begin with, both of their ways that they chose the officials were similar but also differed. The Athenian Government and the Roman Republic both had the citizens of each side choose the officials, but they both had a difference in limitations on how they chose the officials. In Athens, the citizens would vote for the officials, but the people who were official citizens were the ones who were 18 or over, born in Athens, and had to be males. This means that outsiders, slaves, or women could not vote because they were not considered citizens. Additionally, the Athenian Government system for voting was organized with citizens by the name of demes or demos; who belonged to tribes and where combined with others of the same area to make a larger group, which in turn were combined to form ten tribes. (Gill, thoughtco 2017). In contrast, citizens of Rome had to be over 15 years old, male slaves could also vote if they were granted freedom, the women were considered citizens but had no voting rights. The
Rome and Athens were both superpowers during their time and paved the way for modern day western culture. There were a few things that Rome did better though including their citizenship system. The following reasons are why Rome’s citizenship system works better than Athens’. Firstly the Romans allowed a higher number of people to become citizens. The next reason is that Rome made sure that their citizens were playing a role in society. Lastly the Romans had a more organized and efficient senate than that of the Athenians.
The second major similarity between ancient Greek and Roman civilizations was that their citizens voted on who to make their elected officials, however the difference was that each culture differed in their definition of a citizen. The Greeks only recognized native-born males having the right of citizenship, women and slaves could not be citizens and therefore could not vote. The Romans on the other hand, recognized foreigners residing within Italy as half-citizens giving them full legal rights but not the right to vote. Greece mostly voted into office people of middle- to upper-class citizens, whereas Rome only voted in the rich 10% of their population. Even though history seems to show that the Greeks were more fair by randomly selecting citizens to run for office, the Roman government specifically chose who would run for election similar to our political race today where the Republican and Democratic parties choose who will be there candidates.
Athens had more cultural achievements because they had Olympics, Athenian Democracy, and they had Philosophy. The First thing i’m going to talk about is Olympics. On April 6 1896 the first Olymipcs game was held in Athens, Greece, with athletes from 14 countries participahe. The first Olympics game was in paris for the first time and chose Greece as the site of inaugural modern Olympaid. Secondly is the Athenian Democracy. The year of 507 BC the Athenian Leader welcomed a new system of political reforms. he called demokratia or he called it ruled by the people. The Athenian democracy survived for two years. The Ekklesia which is a sovereign governing body that wrote all the laws dictated foreign policy. Finally I want to talk about
Professor Alan Ward wrote an article titled “How Democratic was the Roman Republic?” stating how Rome was not as democratic as everyone thought it was. He argued that only 2 percent of Roman citizens usually voted. Reasons for that may be due to that fact that voting only took place in Rome so only those who could afford the time and expense to go to Rome to vote which were mostly rural voters and their clients. The voters though had no role in selecting candidates for office or in proposing legislation in any assembly. These are reason that go against the fact the Rome was
