Charlie was an ordinary human being who wanted to be smarter and fit in with the rest of society. Was Charlie Gordon better off before the surgery or after the surgery? Charlie Gordon was better off having the surgery, than not having it. Furthermore, Charlie Gordon was able to unlock a more emotional side to himself. Before Charlie had the surgery, he was very limited to his expressions and his creativity. “Then I don’t remember so good, but he said there were pictures, there other people saw some pictures. I couldn’t see any pictures (Progress Report 2).” Charlie was only able to think concretely rather than think of ideas that go so much deeper and because of the surgery, he was able to use that side of him, to think more abstractly and find emotions he didn’t know he had. In addition, due to the surgery, Charlie was more aware of his surroundings and he was able to see how people reacted to specific things, and how they treated others. Charlie isn’t “blind” anymore. “It’s a funny thing I never knew that Joe and Frank and the others liked to have me around all the time to make fun of me (April 18).” Charlie was confused by the phrase “stop pulling a Charlie Gordon”. Charlie was able to choose between what’s good and what was bad. In his goodbye letter, Charlie explains that “That is why I’m going away from New York for good. I don’t want to do nothing like this again. I don’t want Miss Kinnian to feel sorry for me. Everybody feels sorry at the factory and I don’t want that either, so I’m going someplace where nobody knows that Charlie Gordon was once a genius and now he can’t even read a book or write good (July 28).” Charlie would have never left for New York if he hadn’t have had that surgery.
