Following the War of 1812, America developed a new sense of national pride. This time is referred to as the Era of Good Feelings. This era starts after the War of 1812 in the year 1817, the year James Monroe took office proceeding James Madison. This war gave America many rewards for how close they were to defeat. Throughout this new era, a new sense of national pride could be seen reflected in the paintings and texts if the time.
The artwork from this era conveys a similar message: America is a prosperous place, unified and happy. One of the paintings made in this time, name The County Election, shows the Americans as happy and undivided, voting for their next president. The whole town was there and they seem to be agreeing on a common candidate. The agreement is obvious when the results are put into the picture. In a political cartoon, it shows the United States as a large rooster looking over all of the countries in the Western Hemisphere. There was another significant event occurring at this time. As stated before, this era follows the War of 1812 and the last battle was fought after the Treaty of Ghent was signed in Ghent, Belgium. This was because the news couldn’t travel that fast back in the 19th century. The battle was the battle of New Orleans. There is a painting portraying the battle which is appropriately named: The Battle of New Orleans. In this painting, it shows Andrew Jackson standing on his makeshift walls defeating the incoming British army. The obliterated the British attackers in this defense. The painting depicts the American troops as courageous and unified, while the British are shown as a disorganized mess. Both of these pieces of artwork displays the Americans as a powerful and bold
