Consumerism has always played a critical role in my life. As a child, an endless series of elementary school fads introduced this debilitating desire to have. From a young age it was obvious that one’s status is very closely correlated with what they own and the desire to fit in engendered a sense of competition in my elementary psyche. Yet, a year ago when I began working at Walgreens I started to question the ideas with which I had been indoctrinated. But at first, my job seemed a simple rite of passage and my chance to prove I could evolve into a working, dependent citizen.
Early in my experience I learned vital skills in communication, management, and advertising simply from observing my superiors and interacting with customers. However, as I spent more and more time among the inviting promotions and colorful isles, harsh degrading practices became increasingly apparent. Behind Walgreen’s variety of cosmetic, grocery, and seasonal needs lies a

I stopped eating meat and inspired my parents to start recycling. Yet my job is the one part of my lifestyle that does not represent the conscientious person I strive to be. Do I continue selling in to the destruction of our environment and its inhabitants? Or do I quit, disappointing my parents and losing the ability to provide for myself? To be apart of twenty first century society means to think about yourself and only yourself. It is difficult for me to live in a time like this having to use so much unnecessary plastic and non green modes of transportation. Seeing the mistreatment of animals, people, and our earth is exhausting and it needs to end. I want to be apart of the new world where no one is discriminated against because from their skin color to species we are all earthlings deserving of respect. I want to help lead the way in facilitating changes that will benefit animals, our environment, and, by extension,
Walgreens’ principal activity is to operate a chain of retail drugstores that sells prescription and nonprescription drugs. The company also carries additional product lines like general merchandise including cosmetics, food, beverages and photofinishing. Walgreens is one of the fastest growing retailers in the United States and led the chain drugstore industry in retail sales and profits last year.
In Walgreens board of directors there are two inside directors which is acceptable ratio. Best practice recommends at least ¾ of board members should be independent which is in case of Walgreens satisfied.
the benefits of a multichannel strategy” (p. 13). Walgreen’s image is about creating value and making shopping either for consumer goods or prescription drugs more convenient.
Walgreen’s drugstore was located in Barrett’s Hotel at Cottage Grove and Bowen Ave on Chicago’s Southside. The neighborhood was prospering but Walgreen’s wasn’t. Mr. Walgreen decided to add brighter lights, expand the aisles (since the other pharmacies were dull and cramped), and add variety like pots and pans (unheard of in a drugstore. The quality of Walgreen’s pharmaceutical compounds met the very highest standards of purity and freshness. Efficiency was increased. But the most dramatic change Mr. Walgreen instituted was a lever of service and personal attention unequaled by virtually any other pharmacy in Chicago. And this was exemplified by Walgreen’s famous “Two Minute Drill” (Walgreen, n.d., p. 3).
Bright eyed and bushy tailed We do birdfeeders, we do waterbeds, we do lava lamps, and we do daytime soap operas (are there nighttime soap operas?) and where would that leave you and I? In our interminable losing battle; we speak in half-thought-out riddles that leave us riddled with jealousy, anger, unhappiness in that order. My mother tells me that I should marry rich, but my conscience tells me to marry young.
Walgreens is the second-largest retail pharmacy chain in the United States. The company’s mission is to be America’s most loved pharmacy-led health, wellbeing, and beauty retailer (Walgreens Mission, n.d.). Our purpose is to champion everyone’s right to be happy and healthy through the company slogan of “Corner of Happy and Healthy.” Our core focus is to improve the quality of life through our pharmacy services, Take-care clinics, and health and beauty products. These messages are widely broadcast through media such as television commercials, radio, and health and fitness magazines.
Knowing the importance of a strategic vision, every company undertakes a complete analysis periodically. In order to create a strategic plan the parties involved must know every aspect of the industry and the company at hand. The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze the retail drugstore industry and then focus on Walgreens, the industry leader in terms of sales. As part of the in-depth analysis of Walgreens, its major competitors will also be described and analyzed. The retail drugstore industry consists of all those stores that contain a pharmacy and sell prescription drugs. It also includes businesses that sell prescription drugs online and through the mail. Most retail drugstores also offer other
are bearing the sting of taxes and a stagnant income. Since Americans cannot escape paying Uncle Sam, the thought of corporations incorporating overseas is a bitter pill to swallow. For example, last year, Walgreens has to abandon its plans to move its headquarters to Switzerland amid fears of backlash from American citizens. However, Walgreens was especially susceptible to the public sentiment as it is a retail company. While the American public has demonstrated outrage over larger companies moving overseas, they have remained quiet when smaller businesses or non-retail businesses have pursued inversions.
I visited Walgreens today because I wanted to print out some of my pictures, and also I wanted to buy a digital camera for my mom. I choose Walgreens because it is one of the best company in photos and in the selling of digital cameras. My experience in using interactive tools, and digital displays was very interesting.
This preliminary strategic assessment of Walgreens will describe the company’s current corporate strategy and business model. Walgreens’ acquisitions and mergers will be examined as well as the company’s globalization and competitive frame. A brief overview of how the company is performing and its cost-based business strategy will also be examined. This is the first of four reports that make up the strategic assessment for Walgreens.
While Walgreens is exposed to all the general ethical conundrums of the business world, the highly regulated “Pharmacies and Drug Stores” industry does not give much room for them to act unethically.
Consumerism is the center of American culture. Americans tend to confuse their wants with their needs. With new advances in technology, as well as the help of advertisers, people are provided with easy access to new products that seem essential to their everyday life, even though they have survived this long without them. People cannot live without food, clothing, and shelter. But realistically, according to people's different lifestyles, more than food, clothing, and shelter are needed. Most people need to work to survive. Unless a job is either in their own home, or within walking distance, a means of transportation is needed. Whether it be a vehicle, money for a taxi-cab, or a token for a ride on the subway, money must be spent
Transactions at a local corner store, the purchase of a fresh cup of coffee in the morning, and the credit card debt accumulated through the buying of miscellaneous objects on the internet, are just a few contributors to the most powerful “ism” that powers America. From the 1920s to the present day America has been driven by consumerism. Consumerism- in its simplest form- is defined as the buying and selling of products. When tracing the evolution of consumerism in America, one must explore many factors that led up to today’s consumerist culture; the economic ups and downs of the 1920s through the 1950s, the anti-consumerist movement in the 1960s, and people’s obsession with material items in modern society.
Consumerism: as a social and economic order and ideology encourages the acquisition of goods and services in ever-increasing amounts.
In the United States, companies have created the average American to be a consumer. However, the consumerism mentality that most Americans have is akin to Godzilla. Rampaging on deals and the opportunity to take what they think is rightfully theirs. My aim for this project was to discuss how the consumerism of buying changes one’s attitude towards others, ourselves, and our behavior of responsibility.
